Ongoing 3 Photo Request (2012) - DRTT pre WW2.
I'm compiling a photo album of Pre 1946 new build deliveries of buses to Sydney/Newcastle - the old DRTT.
These would be buses within the original Fleet Numbers 1001-1010; 1161-1294; 1372-1762.
( Fleet Numbers 1011-1160 & 1295-1371 were buses bought Second Hand from various sources. )
I'm looking for Near and Offside photos of each Chassis type / Body combination.
Information on here please or direct to me at Ribble@xtra.co.nz
Thanks Don in NZ
Photos of vehicles still needed are....

There are not many pre war deckers in preservation and to my knowledge not many (if any) have been out for the past few motorfests.

There are quite a few, but the people and resources to restore them are very sparse.Simes wrote:There are not many pre war deckers in preservation and to my knowledge not many (if any) have been out for the past few motorfests.
The DRTT list is as follows:
1187 1935 Albion Venturer
1286 1937 AEC Regent
1379 1937 Leyland TD-4 (appears regularly at Motorfest)
1411 1937 Leyland TD-4 lowbridge (body currently on an Albion Model 80 Venturer chassis)
1438 1937 Leyland TD-5
1563 1938 Leyland TD-5
1615 1939 Albion Venturer
1635 1939 Leyland TD-5
1688 1940 AEC Regent (has appeared at Motorfest in the past a few times)
1694 1940 AEC Regent
Only two of the above are restored and capable of passenger work (1379 1688). A third (1187)although the body is completely restored, has unresolved mechanical issues particularly its ancient braking system (which may never be capable of coping adequately with modern conditions). 1688 requires refurbishment/replacement of part of its braking system and some remedial work has already been done to this end. None of the others are anywhere near restored condition. 1635 has had quite a deal of work done to it and 1615 is undergoing a comprehensive restoration process as I write.

So how 'capable' are 1379 and 1688 in modern conditions?
Are the post war rear platform deckers much better at their work?

Under load they are unforgiving in heavy, stop start traffic conditions-especially 1688,its revs die fairly quickly necessitating constant, quick changes in the low range.Hard work in hot weather. I think the Leyland is a bit slower but hangs on longer on a grade- a bit like an Albion( not that I have ever driven 1379 but have driven similar Leylands). They were probably OK in the old days before the proliferation of cars, traffic lights and other intrusions. The post war buses tended to have larger engines (Leyland OPD2 9.8 litres /AEC 9.6 litres) and of course preselector gear boxes made life easier. Leyland OPD2s had synchro mesh boxes apart from the last 50 which were fitted with uncomfortable preselectors. The 90 leyland OPD1s and 143 Albion CX19ws were basically prewar in character, full crash with 8.6 litre engines the same as the prewar TD-3/4/5 models and the late prewar CX 19 Venturers (some also had 6LW Gardners). I have generally found that crash boxes are more positive in response than the wishy washy synchro boxes of the Leyland OPD2s.Swift wrote:So how 'capable' are 1379 and 1688 in modern conditions?

My apologies, 1379 slipped my mind, it has been a regular over the past few years, at the time of my post I had 1187 and 1688 in mindDave Wilson wrote: There are quite a few, but the people and resources to restore them are very sparse.

Would there be any use in fitting a "decent" braking system to 1187? I quite like the look of it and would love to see it on the road at some stage in the future..
