First major early works contract awarded for the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project

Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd has been awarded the first large early works contract for the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project, worth approximately $33 million, Transport Minister Rachel Nolan announced today.

The company will build the Gold Coast University Hospital Station Shell and carry out associated roadworks in Parklands Drive, Southport.

This first major package includes construction of the floor, roof and walls that will support the future light rail station structure.

“The shell construction and associated roadworks is expected to create around 200 direct and indirect jobs.

“Labour and materials will be sourced locally where possible providing a valuable boost to the Gold Coast economy.”

Ms Nolan said a staged construction approach will be used to minimise traffic and pedestrian disruption.

The first stage of the station shell construction and Parklands Drive road works is expected to start later this month and is due for completion in September 2011.

The final stage of construction and fit out of the station will take place in 2012/2013 prior to commencement of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit system operations in 2014.

Requests for Proposals are in the market for two additional Early Enabling road works packages, valued at approximately $110 million.

The Bligh Government recently announced three consortia had been shortlisted to build the Gold Coast’s light rail system – GC Connect, GoldlinQ and Move GC.

Between now and the end of the year the project and three short-listed bid teams will participate in an interactive bid phase.

During this phase the project and bid teams will meet and ensure that a common understanding of the issues and expectations of the light rail system are consistent to ensure high quality bids.

Minister for Transport
The Honourable Rachel Nolan

Sod-turning marks start of $949 million Gold Coast Rapid Transit project

Premier Anna Bligh and Federal Special Minister of State, Senator Joe
Ludwig today officially turned the first sod on the $949 million Gold
Coast Rapid Transit project with Transport Minister Rachel Nolan.

They joined Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke to inspect early works in the
jointly Federal, State and Council funded project.

Ms Bligh said Leighton Contractors are onsite and have started
preliminary works on the Gold Coast University Hospital Station - a
key part of the $949 million project.

"During the next three and a half years, the Gold Coast Rapid Transit
project will generate 6,300 jobs," Ms Bligh said.

"The work starting today includes the construction of the floor, roof
and walls that will support the future station structure and
associated road works in Parklands Drive.

"The Station shell is being constructed in two stages to integrate
with the Gold Coast University Hospital construction and to avoid
disruption when the new 750-bed tertiary teaching hospital is
operational.

"Project modelling estimates that by 2016 there will be approximately
7, 000 passenger movements per day at the Gold Coast University
Hospital Station so what we see here today is a vital part of this
vital project start to come to life."

The Premier said the Gold Coast University Hospital Station made up
the bulk of the early works stage (Stage 1) of the Gold Coast Rapid
transit project.

"We are currently assessing a shortlist of three consortia for the
operator franchise, or stage 2 of the project, and expect this to be
appointed in March 2011," she said.

"The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project will transform the Gold Coast.
It will open up new parts of the city and encourage residential and
retail developments along the line."

Premier Bligh said that when trains start using the new light rail
line in 2014, the 13 kilometre corridor will service the two Gold
Coast hospital locations.

"The 20,000 plus student population of Griffith University, the
Southport medical precinct and the fast growing commercial, retail and
recreational centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach
will also benefit," she said.

"The Federal Government, State Government and local council are
working together to deliver this important public transport
infrastructure for the rapidly-growing Gold Coast."

Senator Ludwig said Gold Coast Rapid Transit was an exciting $949
million nation building project.

"The Gillard Labor Government's record investment in nation building
infrastructure has made iconic projects like this possible," Mr Ludwig
said.

"The commencement of construction today is proof that we have
delivered on our commitments. Federal funding for the Gold Coast
Rapid Transit project was announced only last year, and here we are
today getting on with the job of building infrastructure.

"This project is the largest public transport infrastructure project
ever undertaken on the Gold Coast.

"It will generate construction jobs today and support employment on
the Gold Coast over the long term through increased business and
tourism opportunities.

"Importantly, the Gold Coast Light Rail project will support
sustainable transit oriented development in areas along the corridor."

Ms Nolan said the project will change the way people move around on
the Gold Coast.

"Light rail will connect neighbourhoods, community centres and retail
areas - access to these areas will be possible without cars," she
said.

"When completed, the below ground light rail station will be open
sided, have two platforms and provide an impressive new entry to
Griffith University.

"It will provide easy access for students, staff, patients and
visitors to the university and hospital.

"Over the next few weeks, work on the station shell will ramp up with
excavators, bulldozers and bored piling machines beginning the heavy
duty work.

"Over 550 bored piles will be put into place progressively, using a
staged approach to minimise traffic and pedestrian disruption.

"It's incredible to think that over the course of the project more
than 18 000 tonnes of dirt will be removed as part of the construction
process - that's enough dirt to fill more than seven Olympic size
swimming pools."

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke said the new light rail was an important
part of long-term planning for a first-class public transport system
in the city.

"The Gold Coast is currently Australia's sixth largest city, with more
than half a million residents and 10 million visitors annually, and it
continues to attract new residents," Cr Clarke said.

"By 2031, the city is expected to be home to almost 790,000 people,
and they will require major urban infrastructure."

"Light rail will be a catalyst for city building, integrated land use
and the urban transformation which we will need over coming decades.

"Importantly, it will give our residents something those in many other
cities take for granted - a real alternative to road-based transport.

"It will integrate with a much-improved bus system, provided by
TransLink in partnership with the city."

Traffic on Parklands Drive between Olsen Avenue and Alumni Place will
be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction works.

This traffic arrangement is a permanent change between Alumni Place
and University Drive that is required for future precinct-wide
development.

V8 race change means Gold Coast Rapid Transit system just got even better

The Gold Coast’s V8 motor race circuit has been finalised and the more compact route means the $949 million Gold Coast Rapid Transit system just got even better.

Premier Anna Bligh has announced that the street circuit for the Armor All Gold Coast 600 event means the preferred Gold Coast Rapid Transit route through Surfers Paradise can go ahead.

“The new V8 route has been shortened from 4.49 km to 2.96km and retains the chicane along Main Beach Parade, turning into Breaker Street and travelling west before turning onto the Gold Coast Highway,” she said.

“The circuit will turn towards Surfers Paradise Boulevard before taking a hairpin turn back onto the beach side of Surfers Paradise.

“That means the Gold Coast Rapid Transit Route can now follow the preferred Surfers Paradise Boulevard route instead of the Ferny Avenue option”

Premier Bligh said the highly beneficial alternate route option down Surfers Paradise Boulevard for GCRT was a “no brainer”.

“It will deliver a number of benefits including potential patronage increases of 4%, significant capital cost savings and a reduction in residential and commercial land impacts with an approximate saving of $15 million.

“This project was always going to deliver wonderful benefits to people on the Gold Coast. With this route through the centre of Surfers Paradise it just got even better.”

This superior transport outcome has strong local community and Gold Coast City Council support, including Mayor Ron Clarke, Councillor Suzie Douglas and key stakeholder groups.

Mayor Clarke said this announcement was welcome as businesses and residents had been pushing for this alteration for some time.

He said the new alignment was an opportunity revitalise the northern entrance to Surfers Paradise.

“It will be the trigger for redevelopment, provide clarity for traders and property owners and enable the project partners to begin detailed planning for a green entry boulevard,” Cr Clarke said.

The Premier said that for many years Surfers Paradise Boulevard was the original coast road and was the main artery through the heart of the city.

“The boulevard is a low speed, low traffic road environment. This means construction will be quicker and easier and disruption to Ferny Avenue through traffic will be kept to a minimum,” she said.

“Choosing this alignment is an opportunity to regenerate and activate the northern end of Surfers Paradise.

“It lends itself to creating a pedestrian friendly space with wider footpaths than on Ferny Avenue, the boulevard also has great potential to grow into a socially active and economically vibrant main street.

“Changing from Ferny Avenue to Surfers Paradise Boulevard will mean the light rail will pass closer to the places people live and work while providing easier access to the world famous Surfers Paradise beach.”

Ms Bligh said there had been extensive consultation between the project and V8 Supercars Australia.

“Collaborative discussions on design and operations will enable both the V8 Supercar event and the Gold Coast Rapid Transit system to operate simultaneously, an outcome previously thought to be unachievable,” she said.

During the major Gold Coast event, the operation of the light rail will be reduced to single track running through the interface area.

“This provides the added benefit of an efficient high quality public transport service moving people to and from the V8 motor race,” she said.

Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith, said she was delighted that the route has now been finalised.

"I think this is a good outcome for both the residents who live along the track, but also for business people in Surfers Paradise, who now have some certainty for the future."

The project the team will undertake consultation with key stakeholders and the community to inform them of the change and most directly affected property owners have already been advised of the anticipated impacts to their property.

Four additional properties are required for the revised Surfers Paradise Boulevard route in addition to seven properties that were already required for the Ferny Avenue route.

Of the four properties, three are partial takes of land only that don't impact on the building or structure on the land.

There is one potential full property take that will impact a residential property although it is not clear if this property is inhabited.

Stage One of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project, a 13 kilometre corridor linking Griffith University at Southport to Broadbeach, is scheduled to begin operations in 2014.

Amazing it took so long about this - we have been saying for years that if the racetrack stayed as it had been, no traffic would have been able to travel between Macintosh Island and Chevron Island during the race period - Ferny Avenue is 4 lanes with the Rapid Transit taking 2 and emergency vehicles the other 2. The Government refused to tell the race organisers to compromise - finally some commonsense to ensure an all year benefit to the whole area instead of a weekend for some. But check out the spin....thought Peta-Kay Croft was a closer Labour member ....

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit website has been updated to reflect the changes to the route including minor station location changes.

Besides the obvious changes due the change in route the station on the intersection of Wardoo street and Queen Street has been moved to Queen Street.

Also in the Connect SEQ video there is a ~5 sec view of a light rail station which i have been unable to identify its location which is annoying me. Since it was an unreleased video of a station i can only assume they are working with the Gold Coast Rapid Transit team and maybe even the consortium's tendering for the project so looks like we will be getting some new videos of the route once the tender winner is announced next year.

It will have to be one of the stops in Surfers, as there is only a general traffic lane on one side.

In one of the newsletter relating to the Roadworks North it has this in it
Changes to bus services
Some changes will be made to Surfside bus services to keep
passengers safely away from construction areas.
In Southport, some Surfside bus services that currently travel along
Queen Street and Nerang Street may travel along some other
streets and stops to reach the scheduled end destination.
Revised bus timetables will be issued through TransLink in
late 2010.
http://goldcoastrapidtransit.qld.gov.au ... erview.pdf

Affected routes could include routes 20/20A, 709 and 3.

i hope 709 will have its route changed to use the Transit lanes on smith street.

I nearly missed it but they have also slightly changed the route at Wardoo street and the Light Rail Depot(?). It now travels though what use to be the light rail depot with resumptions of some industrial buildings/sheds which may belong to main roads if my memory serves me correct.

http://goldcoastrapidtransit.qld.gov.au ... erview.pdf

edit:

I just had a look at what happening with the south roadworks and the station locations for both Broadbeach North and Broadbeach South are in new locations. I am unable to understand the reason for this change as now there is no station which directly services Pacific Fair and on what there plan is to do in relation to the bus interchange now that station has moved.

I wouldn't place too much stock in those maps - the station locations are a bit cocked up and the diagram is only intended to show roughly where the roadworks are happening. The approved property diagrams are what you need to look at (although they have not yet released an updated set to take into account the route change at the Marriott).

For that matter, I sincerely hope they aren't going to call it 'Southport South Station'.

As another aside, it strikes me that Paradise Waters could become a bit of PT blackhole without a station and with all the bus services along there removed (or at least severely curtailed).

Trams will depend on the successful tenderer to operate the system. Depending on who wins, they will probably either be Citadis (the Alstom bid), Flexities (the Bombardier bid) and whatever Itochu produces.

The bus network upgraes are all conceptual. A lot of what they released in 2008 has been superseded by recent changes anyway, so I doubt this will be firmed up until much closer to the opening date.

Go cards will be supported.

The following Service Changes statement has since been taken off the Translink Website. (It may of been because of the Affected services list at the bottom of the page had many many errors, including Route 66 and 77 being affected by this)

Edit, Found the new location of the Service Change, http://www.translink.com.au/servicechan ... 1289258825 and for some reason it isn't good enough to be included on the front page of Translink.

Edit2, It has since been taken off the Translink Website again. Wish they would make up there minds. There isn't that much time left to give the public notice and they are still dragging there feet.

Edit3, new link, http://www.translink.com.au/servicechan ... 1289349705
From Monday 22 November, TransLink bus routes 3 and 709 will be unable to travel along Queen Street between Wardoo and Nerang Streets due to the construction of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit (GCRT) system.

These routes will divert along local streets as follows:

* Route 3 will divert in both directions via Nerang Street and Wardoo Street servicing existing bus stops used by routes 18A, 20 and 20A on Nerang Street, and a temporary bus stop on Wardoo Street near Queen Street, before returning to its normal route.
* Route 709 will divert in both directions via High Street and Johnston Street, servicing a temporary stop on High Street near Nerang Street, existing bus stops used by route 5 on Johnston Street and a temporary stop on Johnston Street near Wardoo Street before returning to its normal route.

Due to the staged nature of the construction works, temporary stops may need to be moved at short notice but every effort will be made to minimise impacts on customers.

Found out the reason why the services are being changed is because Queen street is is being changed to westbound only during the construction. I am unable to tell how long this change will be in place for. Limited details can be found here, http://goldcoastrapidtransit.qld.gov.au ... 015_LR.pdf

Would be nice of gold coast rapid updated the website better as many updates are just lost in the "Fact sheets and other resources" section.

While travelling on the 709 today, I saw that they have almost finished excavating and piling the University Hospital station cavern from the Smith Street end. They are busy digging out the Olsen Avenue end, including laying the foundation for the stretch which will lead around the corner to the shunt/stabling area parallel to Olsen Avenue and north of Parklands Drive.

Centre parking in Nerang St in front of the hospital is now long gone, and a large number of trees have been removed from the kerb along Queen Street West.

Veterans let down by light rail snub

Jessica Johnston | April 11th, 2011

GOLD Coast war veterans are outraged there are no plans for a light rail stop outside the Cascade Memorial Gardens at Broadbeach.

A bus stop at the park has also been removed, leaving Diggers with no public transport to the significant site.

Veterans, community groups and councillors are adamant a station was proposed for the area in 2006, but a Rapid Transit spokeswoman said Cascade Gardens was never on the radar.

Broadwater-Southport Rotary Club past president George Friend said the park had been marooned between two stops, at least 1km up the road.

"It just belies commonsense," Mr Friend said. "It's a public park, with no access.

"The Rapid Transit team have simply failed in their community responsibility.

"They keep quoting 300,000 residents had been surveyed; they didn't ask the primary target groups that use the park."

A Rapid Transit spokeswoman said the project team consulted more than 300,000 businesses, residents and stakeholders during its concept design and impact management planning in 2006-2008.

She said Cascade Gardens was never proposed as a station location.
http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/201 ... -news.html

@warning this is a rant

This was in the news on the 11th and now it made it back onto 9 Gold Coast News again tonight(18th).
Cr Eddy Sarroff has now made this into a pet project to get a station built there ( Cascade Memorial Gardens at Broadbeach) but why didn't he make a point about this over 3 years ago. Why did he not make a point about it before all the designs for the project been completed and the consortium have submitted there bids?

I say if he wants to waste money on a station there it should come out of his division 10 funds(if he didn't already get them cut out of the budget) as there will be a station another station 250 meters up the road from Cascade Memorial Gardens if the elderly are able to walk to a light rail station in the first place and walk in the park then there is no reason they wouldn't be able to walk the extra 250 meters to get there. And i bet with this token gesture to try and please the elderly community he will win lots of votes. There is no reason money should be wasted on a station like this. Lets put it to rest and get on with building the Light Rail.

To there defense there was a proposed station to be built there in the PB Light Rail study in 2004 but it was never in the recent plans for the rapid transit system as the Rapid Transit spokeswoman stated.

Nice though the Cascade Gardens are, it's only a park. Hardly a major trip generator compared to Cavill Avenue (major activity centre) or even the nearby Monaco Street (denser residential and tourist accommodation with links to the west).

There is no way a station will be built there - no reason to. Rapid transit lines are not supposed to stop everywhere.

There is still going to be some derivative of the 750 running anyway (most likely along Remembrance Drive through Surfers), and it will cater for travel to the 'in-between' locations.

GoldlinQ has been selected to build the lightrail!!
The Queensland government has named the company that will build and operate the first stage of the Gold Coast's light rail system.

The GoldLinQ consortium, whose members include Downer EDI and Bombardier, was chosen from a short list of three.

Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk says the $1 billion project will revolutionise public transport on the Gold Coast.

"This is going to provide residents living on the Gold Coast with more public transport options. Imagine what it's going to do for tourism as well," she told the ABC.

"The best thing is that it's going to link in with our Translink network which means you'll be able to use your Go Card on this system."

Stage one of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit system, from Griffith University to Broadbeach via Southport and Surfers Paradise, is due to begin operation in 2014.

The system is also expected to service a proposed Commonwealth Games village at Parklands. The Gold Coast is vying for the right to host the games in 2018.

Ms Palaszczuk will formally announce the successful bidder for the light rail project on the Gold Coast this morning.
