Scania K93 Bus

Postby Mr Bugs » Sat Mar 26, 2011 9:50 pm

G'day all,
spent a few days perusing this wonderful site and decided that this may be just the place to get some answers so thanks for allowing me to join and be a part of your site. :D
I'm searching for any info on a Scania bus that was converted by Nambucca River Eng. Co. for use as a mobile Council Library.
I have vin number, build number and rego number but won't post at this time incase it's not allowed, but I noticed under the paintwork was remnants of "9316" and after perusing this site, I found that number was on a Scania 14.5 and I'm curious as to whether it might be the same vehicle that was converted to it's current state which measures 11.0. :?:
I've got more questions about this vehicle, but will wait till someone responds .
thanks in advance!

I doubt that there are any K93 Scanias with 14.5 body.
It would have to have a tag axle to be 14.5 also.
What is the Chassis No ?

In what state is the bus registered?

I don't see any issue with posting the VIN if you have access to it. It will help identify the vehicle. A picture also tells a thousand words as the old saying goes...
.
Job done.

G'day Mr Bugs,

Could you supply the build number as well please? It should be 155 built September 1991 new to Wollongong City Council for a library.

G'day Hornibrook,
thanks for responding and the plate pics I have don't seem to list a "Build number" but has an approval number of what looks like 7880 ( the first 8 could be a 9).
this plate seems to have been affixed by Nambucca River Eng. Co. and is dated 9/91
cheers

Rego is RTL 168.
so you're saying it was brand new when converted by NREC for the Council ?
I'm trying to find out how many owners as to whether it was set up for bus or coach work previous to the Council so maybe had a highway diff in it ?
Also I'm trying to work out what engine and size it has and how to work out GCM of it
cheers

Nambucca records say it was brand new and purposely built by Nambucca for the council. When Express took over from Nambucca, they still did a few similar jobs in the form of purposely built motorhomes.

Thanks all for your responses !!!
Anyone know whether by the external looks of the diff, it's possible to tell if it's highway or city ratio?
cheers

To answer a number of questions put foward here I'll do it in point form.

1 To find out about diff ratios the best advice would be to ring Scania with the vin number on hand and they should be able to find it in their database which would indicate what the vehicle was built with so as long as there hasn't been a modification in later life. The other way is climb underneath if possible and there should be a dataplate on the diff centre itself which will probably have the ratio stamped on it.

2 The engine is a 9 litre and it will most likely be rated at either 250 or 270 horsepower, if it is an auto. I would suggest the former.

3 GCM is Gross Combination Mass and that I have no idea of in regard to that vehicle but if you are thinking Gross Vehicle Mass or GVM then I can tell you with authority that that chassis will quite legally load right up to maximum allowable legal limits. The Scania listed GVM is higher than those just like a lot of heavy duty vehicles but if an actual number is needed then check with Scania directly or it might be found on the ID. plate on the vehicle from Scania, not the bodybuilder plate.

Peta.
I do speak my mind, always have and always will. Oh the photo? Yeah it's me.

G'day Peta,
thanks for the response and help
I'll talk to Scania today re the diff from factory as I could only get pics of the diff but non showing any id plates.
It is GCM that I'm after as I'm looking at towing @ 7+ T but the GVM is of concern to me as on the affixed Approval plate it says 17500kg GVM, on the SAAB-Scania plate it says 17500 , 1 - 6.500kg, 2 - 11.000kg, then on the rego decal it says GVM 17010 and finally on the side of the coach it has GG 18900 and Tare 10620.
This I believe means the chassis + running gear was 6.500kg from Scania and was legal GVM in any configuration for 17500kg :?:
but as for all the other figures and variations :?: :? <shrugs>

Is the vehicle on air bags or springs. The GVM is nowhere near NSW axle weights.
6500 kg front
10000 kg rear but no more than 16000 kg gross.
If on air bags.

yes it's on quad air bag rear and air bag front and this is 1 issue I'm trying to check before it goes for sale.
The approval / compliance plate is stamped "GVM 17500" , the SAAB-Scania plate "1- 6500kg, 2- 11000kg . 17500kg, then the rego label is stamped
"GVM 17010
so what's the actual legal weights ?? :?: :?

To add to my previous post, on the side of the vehicle is "Tare 10620 and GG :?: :? 18900 :?:

That vehicle was definately new to Wollongong City Council. If you're after body details, Nambucca are now Express, in the same place. It replaced a 1316 Merc with a Nambucca body which had a 3208 Cat put in it (books must be heavy!) The Merc replaced a BLP Bedford with a CCMC body, which they also bought new.
After safety, it's all about the service!

G'day Mr Scania,
I was present at the auction but didn't buy it.
I was in mixed minds with the 4 different GVM's on it and I'd contacted the RTA and their so called experts and they implied that it could only be registered at the 16,000 but I could get it engineered with the possibility of a higher GVM. I was willing to take the gamble for @ $30k but it went for $36k then the fees made it a bit of an expensive gamble.
I'd like to thank you and everyone else that took their time to respond and help me with this query and unfortunately for you all, I'll more than likely be back when the next vehicle of interest appears somewhere.
Thanks again !!! :D

Bus was passed in at Auction in Wollongong around a month ago for $25,000. I have a relative that works at Wollongong Council and he was advised there were issues with the weights on a certain axle? He wasn't sure what was being talked about but this might answer your questions about the GVM. It was an extremly clean unit- I was actually going to try and buy it for spares for our Scania's but at that price it wasn't worth it. Also of interest it has a Scania Auto fitted and had a lot of $$$$$ spent on it recently for a Gearbox Rebuild.
