Help

Postby Heardy_101 » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:42 pm

Ok need some help with a few things...

Saw a VR/VS Commodore with the Plates "STA196" (or 296) at my work......now, logically thinking, that deff is an ex STA Bus Plate...could the owner come forward? (or name the bus lol)

Also, I plan to do some walking along some old locations of Railway lines soon...need to know where I can find remains of the Penfield and Northfield lines. Cheers.
Cheers, Mitchell Heard.

STA196 was the registration plate for bus 1196; a Volvo B59. STA296 was the registration plate for bus 1296; a Volvo B59. Hostoric 'R' and 'S' series registrations can; upon payment of the appropriate fee(s) be reissued. It is entirely plausible that a Stuart Thomas Ashman who was born on 19 June* decided to have a numberplate on their vehicle appropriate to themselves. For more information on 'R' and 'S' series registrations I would refer you to the Transport SA Website: http://dtei.sa.gov.au/ezyplates/Plate_s ... ber_plates

Penfield No. 3 platform is still extant; albeit rather dilapidated. The former Northfield station on Briens Rd is now a skate park; the platform was still standing until the area was rebuilt as the skate park. Pooraka station is still extant on Main North Rd - Main North Rd dips at the point where it crossed the railway line. Cavan station on Port Wakefield Rd was still standing 10 years ago; but I'm not sure of its current status.. There is a Semaphore signal at the location where the Northfield line crossed over Churchill Rd North.

Where the Semaphore signal on the Northfield line near Churchill Road North is, the railway tracks still cross over the road. On the northbound lane, both up and down tracks are still there, and on the southbound lane one of tracks is still there. You can see the traffic island in the middle of the road that would have had the crossing bells standing on.
Time to get bus priority and tram priority through the city and suburbs.
Time to police bus lanes which are used by arrogant car drivers.
Time to work for better timetables and better connections.

I'm pretty sure the Semaphore signal was removed as part of the Dry Creek Railcar Yard works so thus is now gone.

Where's work? Because that would have been my car :) I purchased the S series plate STA296 through DTEI as a personalised plate. It was formerly a B59 Volvo.

Two reasons:
1) With the advent of the W90/W91, the bus route that provided most of my freedom as a child/teenager was the 296, so its a memorial to the efficient numbers, (and an up yours to Alpharoute!)

2) Being a public transport fan, STA was just too good not to pass up.

Firstly, Witsend, thank you for solving the mystery; although I think my "Stuart Thomas Ashman" still was a good theory! :) Not only was 296 a Volvo B59; it was a Circle Line liveried Volvo B59. ;)

Secondly; There is a signal at the intersection of the former Northfield line and Churchill Rd North; however it is not a Semaphore signal; but is of the "Searchlight" variety.

As an aside; there is a semaphore signal within the Adelaide Metropolitan area which still sees intermittent use. Can anybody name the location?

Isn't that the one at Mt Barker Junction (ie. it is in the Adelaide Metropolitan or Metroticket area).

Can I have two guesses? The mini train that operates between Semaphore and Fort Glanville, my second guess is somewhere on SteamRanger's network?

I didn't know that there was a semaphore signal at Mt. Barker Junction.

I'll allow you two guesses as... I wasn't aware that there were any signals on the Semaphore-Fort Glanville line; and while there is a Train Order signal at Mt. Barker station; I don't know if it is used for SteamRanger workings.

It is indeed, Mr. Baytram. Not the most likely place that one would expect to see railway style equipment such as Semaphore Signals; it has boom barriers similar to those found on railway lines. I even recall one day TransAdelaide people working on the boom barriers. This photo of the Birkenhead Bridge clearly shows the Semaphore signals - one at each end of the bridge (for both directions of river traffic): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Birke ... e_2007.jpg

There is a "searchlight" type signal at a former crossing along the Northfield line, one of the backstreets I think, the tracks are still there too.
