Maximum attempts at login exceeded? - but I only tried once

Post by Newcastle Flyer »

I just went to login yet it gave me the notice that the maximum number of login attempts exceeded, but I only tried once.
Anyone know why just logging once would exceed the login limit?
Could it mean someone was trying to hack into my account?

Well the same thing just happened to me. Normally it automatically logs me in but I had been logged out, and when I tried to login again it said that the maximum number of login attempts had been exceeded and that I needed to solve a CAPTCHA.

I'm just wondering if it may indicate someone/(or them) trying to hack into people's accounts?

Just happened to me too. I logged out, cleaned out the cache on my PC and then tried to log back in, but I got:
You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below.

95% of the time, if you choose option to be kept logged in, you still have to log in.
Also of note is that I'm now finding this site very slow.

It is still the same fast speed for me. Newcastle Flyer, there must be something going on with your personal computer, it is not the site.

I can't say I'm having any problems now, nor have I found the site is slower than usual, but it looks as if whatever is causing it is not peculiar to this forum. I just tried logging into another forum I occasionally post on, and I got the familiar message:
You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below.

I haven't experienced this problem yet and hopefully I won't. Though, I find answering CAPTCHA's fun.

This message MAY indicate that someone has tried to login to your account. This could be a person or it could be a computer trying to do it. The CAPTCHA confirmation will come up if you (or someone/something else) makes multiple failed attempts to login to your account. As computers generally can't do the CAPTCHA's it also stops the site being drastically slowed down by someone trying to run a script trying to login to accounts.

It could even be another person who uses your computer trying to login to your account for whatever reason.

The fact that the CAPTCHA confirmation comes up is a good thing in a way - it confirms that no one has been able to login to your account.

You tell me Ben.

If you can't connect through Tapatalk then the obvious thing would be to try logging in via a web browser on your phone.

If I use Safari, I can login with no issues.

While getting notified about another log in issue powered using phpBB, it contained this link (http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1947925).

This MAY (not that it was or is) the issue. The date I made this threads is 29 Dec 2010, while the link at phpBB has a thread dated 19 Jan 2011.

The paragraph about signs seem to suggest something similar of what may have happened.
