What better way to spend a birthday?

Post by Herbert »

During the 1970s & 1980s, the WA Transport Museum operated its former London double decker as a means of generating funds for the preservation of trams, trolleybuses and buses.

Recently Colin Davison presented me with these photos he took on one such occasion, when the RTL was being operated over the October long-weekend at the York Fair. On each of the days I had the pleasure of being conductor. A happy coincidence is that these photos were taken on my 16th birthday - and what better way to spend a birthday that riding the back platform of your favourite double decker bus?

Those who know personally the clever lad responsible for the .php script that makes the WA fleet list database accessible on-line will no doubt be as shocked as I was with the last photo ... (talk about a chip off the old block!)

Thanks, Col, for capturing this occasion & bringing back some very fond memories.

Were you wearing magnetic shoes, Herbie? As I recall, you managed to stay on the back platform that day despite the best efforts of 'M R Daves' (and other drivers) to dislodge you .. ..
 8)
All part of the fun fair / York Fair for a 16 year-old, I suppose.

For a birthday boy, he doesn't look too happy.
Nice birthday suit, BTW!

Cheers!

Possibly due to the slipstream effect - ever notice how Snoopy seems to have a grimace rather than a grin when enjoying a car ride in the 'Peanuts' cartoons ?

Doesn't look like a genuine London Transport issue uniform to me - but far preferable to a youthful Herbert "letting IT all hang out" !! :P

It wasn't - it was my old man's RAAF jacket from his Nasho days. It wasn't the only non-kosher item, either, as the TIM we used was Mr Ian's ex-Liverpool one. The conductor's PSV badge was home made - texta on a white sticker over an old badge pinched from my little sister.

Some other photos from that era (though not the same weekend):
