Nothing idles, quite like a 245 leyland Tiger.
Except maybe a whiteway washing machine, or another Leyland Tiger.

Image

The middle picture is a Newmans New Zealand 245 Leyland Tiger in Great Sights Livery

The top photo is a restored Newmans Ansair Flexible which was restored from a campervan to celebrate Newmans NZ 100 years.
The bottom shot is a whole lot of Volvos at the Agradome Rotorua
These pictures were taken around 1988

I cannot have the brains to separate the photos hence the three in one.

Have you got a shot of an Allways one in the original livery? (much better one IMHO)

Thanks for posting the last pic of 3. I don't see many photos of the Clippers. I've been on countless charters on Leyland Tigers with Tourliner ll bodies, Link the pic in the middle.

Is that what looks to be a baxters Hino behind the punchbowl tiger? If so, does anyone have any photos or information on it, i.e. what type it was and where it went. Thanks.

Having looked through my old photos, I'm guessing it's either fleet 34 (m/o 8531) or fleet 68 (m/o 468), both of which were Hino RG197Ks and which were sold to Martins of Albury. When with Baxters they were from memory the newest buses still with the "Baxters HOLROYD BUS LINES" sign writing, as opposed to the later "Baxters Bus Lines" script (although I am open to a challenge on that).

The chassis is basically designed for coach use anyway so why not go the whole hog and add a tag to them?
I used to see these quite alot alongside the usual staple of Dennings and Domino /Austral Tourmasters ,Mercedes 0302s and 0303s and some Kassbohrer Setras.

You don't see them anymore around Sydney. Were they a cheaper alternative to the others?

I heard they were better hill climbers than the Detroits.

Ventura Tiger,
Thank you for posting the shots especially the Punchbowl and Allways machines.

The Punchbowl machine was converted from Coach to bus seating later in it's Punchbowl career and became m/o 7028 basically for school charter work until it was replaced.

I know it ended up in Melbourne.Just wondering if anybody knows it's current location and status??? If anybody has current photos,it would be great to see them.

Kind Regards Punchbowl Tiger Cub

Hi All,

I'm curious to know what gearboxes these tag Leylands had? I'm guessing autos but can't see anything else other than crash boxes in them?

I believe they were 6 speed ZF synchro manuals.

Should ask someone from NZ if they have pictures of tag axle Tigers, I think I got my licence in that Great Sights coach, different livery by then, and then started driving lots of tigers for Scenic.
They had 6 speed ZF's with an air operted spiltter, fun just to flick to the switch and hear the hiss.
They weren't the best climbers, B10's went past regurlarly, but the handling was superb and could go around bends like nothing else.

I think the Allways coach is the one in the same that ended up at Sugar Valley Which become svc 003 on Bicentenial plates if my memory serves me correctly. It was a twelve speed split box ZF synchro. Was a great coach to drive. It found its way to New Zealand.

From memory that was fleet number 055, that picture was taken in the South Island,
with that coach being based in Christchurch, Newmans did not have many of them

If it was 055, then a different coach, I went for my licence in 045 I think in Auckland.

Im open to correction here but iirc Newmans had 2 Leyland Tigers, in that body config, and both were stationed in the South Island. and indeed they could well have been 45 and 46, (cause now I think about it, 055 was my allocated coach, a Volvo B10m, out of Auckland)
which doesnt mean to say that at some stage they came north.
That photo was taken at Knights Point on the West Coast of the South Island approx Feb 1989.

A nephew of my late stepfather was the fellow that started Advance Express years ago running Syd.-Bris. and he had a three axle Tiger as a main vehicle. Graham absolutely swore by it and reckoned it was a faultless vehicle that kept coming back for more.

The Dennings and Australs wit hteir Detriot Diesels were good for high speed power along the endless highways but the Tiger trounced them when it came to hill climbing torque.

That coach owned by Thompson's now (034GJT). One of the best coaches I've ever driven. Will be a shame to see it retire in the next 12 months.
