Buses on the Mountain
On what Mountain? Mt Panorama in October, that is. I finally made my first pilgrimage to the Bathurst 1000 this year, and it did not disappoint. There were some transit gems there, too, and not just the plethora of Jones Bros buses doing the shuttles.
The "Holden Racing Team" Leyland Atlantean HRT 052, fitted with Roe bodywork was found at the Campground adjacent to the Chase. It's been faithfully painted with the Holden Racing Team livery of the late 90's. There is signwriting for Osborn's of Muswellbrook on it which leads me to believe that it could be a Leyland Atlantean PDR2/1 that new to West Yorkshire PTE in 1971 as their no. 419, and then imported and sold to Osborn's as MO7248. As the camper was unattended at the time I didn't fancy my chances for a look-see inside ...
At Skyline was this BP-liveried Commer Camelback-style bus, with Victorian rego FNG 345. Again unattended, anyone knows of its history?
Many coaches also visit Bathurst - here at the coach park is a Selwoods coach, a delightful old Mercedes belonging to Corby's of Oberon, and a Mills Tui-bodied Greyhound Scania.
How boring ... lots and lots of white coaches!!!! The silver of the Volgren decker and the Hoppies coach kinda breaks this up a little. In the background is a Heli-Aust Bell 206 helicopter making its final approach (?) to the main straight Helipad.
As mentioned earlier Jones Bros provided the shuttle service between the Main Straight and Reid Park at the top of the mountain. A plethora of buses from Hinos and Isuzus to new low-floor Mercedes and Volvos were used. The ride I had in one of the Merc OC1621's was fun as we chugged up the steep grades to Reid Park in first gear! It was also the first time I rode in a Mercedes OH1830L - quite impressive and love the citybus/charter CB60 hybrid interior arrangement. As I paid good $$$$$$ to see a car race I didn't stick around to take bus photos but they would've looked stunning in the sunshine.
This Bustech-bodied Volvo B7RLE (MO3279) leaves passengers with no doubt which of the two marques won the Great Race.
And oh, allow me to share a few race pics, too:

Re: Buses on the Mountain
The Commer is a Commando chassis of late 40s/early 50s. I think the body is Park Royal, it looks very similar to the London Transport C class Inter Station buses of the 1930s. Ansett had several of them for airport shuttles.
I photographed this one in the Nambour area of Qld about 40 years ago, I wonder if it is related ??

Ohhhhhh that Corby's O302 (?) looks pretty smick! Great collection of shots there mate
Re: Buses on the Mountain
Any chance of being supplied with the rego of that Corby's O302? I last saw it on MO 135 plates, but it is clearly on TV's there.Simes wrote:Ohhhhhh that Corby's O302 (?) looks pretty smick! Great collection of shots there mate
Thanks!
Re: Buses on the Mountain
Love that Holden Racing Team Leyland Atlantean bus! Imagine driving that around Mount Panorama. HRT logo an livery looks good but it is not based on this years HRT livery. I would put a poster of Mark Skaife and Glenn Seton on the sides if I owned that bus!!

Re: Buses on the Mountain
I had indirect contact from the owners of the Commer last year, apparently it lives in a shed in Seymour and only comes out for the journey to the race, it was painted in the BP colours for an ad some years ago, and the best I could find was that it was thought to be one of the Ansett Airporters. Very interesting shots, and Genman was extremely envious of being 'scooped' on the new dog!boronia wrote:The Commer is a Commando chassis of late 40s/early 50s. Re: Buses on the Mountain
Thanks to Boronia and E.L. Wood on the pic and story behind the Commer. It's quite an interesting design and too bad it's spoilt by an oil company's livery.
Ben O, it's TV 871. And many thanks to Denair for the pic - that O302 simply looks gorgeous, definitely much better than the dog.Ben O wrote:Any chance of being supplied with the rego of that Corby's O302? I last saw it on MO 135 plates, but it is clearly on TV's there.
No, that was the only Greyhound at Bathurst. It must've been on a charter - left the circuit straight after the race, too. There were, however, a few Murray's coaches along with two Hawkesford's Denning double deckers.gen man wrote:mmm nice angels , pity about the lack of a nice shot of GA (829). Ah thanks so interesting to note that Commer Commando actually went through 3 airline operators from a bygone era ... BOAC, ANA and Ansett ...gravesend_king wrote:Moe info on the camelback can be found here

Re: Buses on the Mountain
I've read the article but I find it hard to believe that BOAC would have had sufficient presence in Australia in the 1950s to warrant them importing their own buses. Nor would I assume that ANA imported them second hand from the UK.kitkat271 wrote:Ah thanks so interesting to note that Commer Commando actually went through 3 airline operators from a bygone era ... This is the team from the HRT052 double decker bus from the chase camp ground.
Glad you liked it, and we love the photos.
We will be there again this year, same place, as we are every year.
You are welcome to come around for a full tour inside and out if you are interested.
Good to see people still interested in the old girl.
