{UTA} MKIII Mercedes: 2520 for "Captainch"
Mercedes 0305 MKIII: 2520 was withdrawn after an accident and fire damage on New Years Day, 1987.
2520 is seen sitting at Chullora Workshops on 19/3/87 with MKIII 2529 (which was later repaired and returned to service)
A rear view of 2520 showing the fire damage
Photographs: Graeme Knappick
The photo quality of this June, 1982 in service view of 2520 isn't too good but I don't think there are too many known photos of 2520 in actual service. The bus is seen at Strathfield Station.

How did it catch fire
Was it withdrawn because of the fire damage
I also noticed the "Bus Impounded, Do Not Move" sign on 2529.
That was hit on the NSR by a truck on Parramatta Rd at Burwood twisting the whole rear end and then it careered into a shop on Burwood Rd.

Apparently the driver left the bus and while he was away it was stolen and hit a power pole. The wires came down on top of the bus which started the fire.AEC Decker wrote:What did it hitleopard1543 wrote:Mercedes 0305 MKIII: 2520 was withdrawn after an accident and fire damage on New Years Day, 1987.

(Maybe "Captainch" will be able to fill us in more on the details I'm sure).
Probably both the accident & fire damage led to its demise.

2516
Yes, 2516's accident happened at Darling Street Wharf when it went for a swim on 28/12/88.Fleet Lists wrote:It has now been added to the withdrawn online data base.
The only withdrawn Mark III now missing is 2516.
Do you have any withdrawal information on it?
I noted it at Chullora Workshops on 22/6/89 with the plates removed.
My last sighting of 2516 was on 7/2/91 when it was in Randwick yard sitting with all the withdrawn MKI Mercedes.

Yes, the high rise red brick building behind was a Motel. I stayed there a few times (1981-4) when I use to visit Sydney from Murrurundi.Simes wrote:holy crap strathfield looks so much different in '82 compared to the area I knew between '90 and '97 (and it's changed more since then as well). That pre 1988 rebuilding looks to of been very exhaustive

No, according to the run plate, E = Enfield.leopard1543 wrote:No Ryde Depot.
But I do remember 2516 - 2521 were new to Ryde and 2522 was new to Enfield.

My records show that 2520 was new to Ryde on 4/11/81 but went to Enfield for a short spell in 1982 but then returned to Ryde later.

Re: {UTA} MKIII Mercedes: 2520
For many years I thought that the chassis of 2520 was under Toongabbie/CDC/Casula 7423.
After a meeting with her today and looking at Fleetlists, it is evident that that was not possible.
- 2520 withdrawn 1987, chassis to Customs, body to Alnor ( where I remember it)
- 7423 bodied by Customs 1986
So does any reader know:
- Did anything come of 2520's chassis at Customs
- What was the story (if any) with 7423 having what appeared to be a standard UTA chassis.

Re: {UTA} MKIII Mercedes: 2520 for "Captainch"
the moral of the story is if you have a accident........................many many years latter it may come back to haunt you.......................somehow 2520 came back again to ryde, and haunt the" INSTANT INSPECTOR" who removed it from the fleet the "FIRST" time on its arrival at ryde he received councilling and was heard to say it was scrapped!.............have not heard if he has been released from the home for bewilled bus drivers! the accident and fire resulted from the same smash out side kenny butts gladesville depot! :lol:p.s one day I was in the office and the said named was bawling out a new driver for leaving his bus unattended with the keys in it..........................I called the new bus driver outside the office and told him to go back in and ask the officer............"WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BUS 2520" the said officer went a bright shade of red! he never challeged any body again.................also when the new "2520" was delived to ryde guess who called him up to look outside his window to see a "GHOST" ha ha ha.
