Looking at the pic, It appears the unit is already here having travelled through the North Coast Line to Brisbane, but will spend a couple of days in Brisbane undergoing testing (brakes, etc) for a couple of days. The units will presumably be tested on the GC Line.

Everything about these new trains is good, except for the "style" of the airconditioner on top.

I am looking forward to travelling on one, having seen many pictures of what they look like.

Very nice! The sad thing is that, while I saw all sorts during my stay in Nambour (EMUs, ICEs, ETTs, and even SMU 238) I could have been trackside to to see IMU 161 head south if I had extended my stay just one or two more days.

The body is based on Transperth's B-Sets used mainly on the Joondalup Line.

The TransPerth Bombardier sets are only going to be used on the Joondalup and Mandurah Lines. The other three lines in Perth (Armadale, Fremantle, Midland) are stuck with the TransPerth A sets.

Not a big fan of those ugly aircon boxes, I just got back from Perth today and they really mar an otherwise nice body shell.

Hopefully they will have better seating than the TransPerth units, theirs seems to be the same uncomfortable type as on the Siemens sets in Melbourne.

Got any possible dates for Gold Coast runs?

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of these new Units - everyone does - I'm just hoping that their 'crashworthiness' is decent and not just cheap and nasty!

The acceleration of the 160s seem to be faster than the 100/120 series IMUs. This is despite the lower revenue speed of the new 160 series (130km/h). But still, I think they should've placed intercarriage doors.

They will actually test up to 150km/h on the Gold Coast Line.

These beasts could do a wheel stand from stop/start. 1.3m/s/s IIRC.

That has been said to be the Transperth speed, so QR's may not be the same, presumably it is the same though.

It shouldn't cause any problems, but the RP users were up in arms over it... But the Perth B seires and Melbourne Siemens sets don't have intercarriage doors, and I don't think they'd let that style proliferate if it wasn't as safe...

There's no real difference in external noise between a B-set and an A-set in Perth. The A-sets and our units actually get noiser when people go through the doors, while they are open.

One big problem I foresee is vandalism of the windows. Perth has a massive problem with window scratching, far worse than anything I've ever seen on both buses and trains. With the larger panel windows they have on both types of units and on our 160s, they will be harder to replace.

That might have something to do with the gearing, lower speed, higher acceleration or higher speed, and slower acceleration.

I don't understand the QR obsession with split windows, the ICE doesn't have it...

That is garbage.

TP A Series = QR EMU
TP B Series = QR 160 IMU

There is a huuuge difference in external noise between the two. I cannot hear that infamous 'whine' of the EMU in a 160 IMU. Infact, I can't hear a 160 IMU - at all!

The issue surrounding InterCar Doors on Railpage was the fact that individual carriages can be locked down to reflect late evening patronage or prevent passengers from being injured if the car has been defaced/damaged. If there is a problem with one car in a 106/260 IMU/SMU, then the entire Unit must be locked up.

The idea behind split windows is basically replacement cost. So, when the Keperra/Loganlea/Nerang Boys throw rocks, only half the window has to be replaced.

ABS, it is a shame that parasites deface the windows with sharp implements and sand paper. The actual window does not scratch, just the tint. QR don't seem to be fussed on re-tinting windows. The Re-engineered/Overhauled EMUs are one excellent example.
