Re: V/Line Trips
I somehow doubt that anyone would bother making it to Melton (either by the train or by #456 bus) earlier to pick up the V/Liner there just to save a small amount of $$$. I don't think your allowed to travel 'on two tickets' - i.e. buying a 1+2 Metcard as far as Melton, then changing over to a V/Line ticket at Melton is permitted without changing services.Melbournetransport wrote:if you have weekly, Monthly or a Yearly zone 1 ticket, it will cost you

Also, Melton is in Zone 2, so you would need Zone 1+2, not Zone 1.

There is nothing to say that such a trip couldn't be rescheduled to a Saturday, although the local buses wouldn't be as frequent I assume, and the majority of "country town" shops close between 12 and 1PM (not sure about Ballarat though).B7RLE wrote:I would have able to go if it was'nt a friday

On the V/Line ticket it will have the following:XTrampoline wrote:I somehow doubt that anyone would bother making it to Melton (either by the train or by #456 bus) earlier to pick up the V/Liner there just to save a small amount of $$$. Melton +Z2
To Ballarat + BTS
To Melton + Z2
So you will have a Zone 2 ticket, Just get a Sunshine to Ballarat ticket which cost the same.
Passengers must have a single valid ticket for their entire journey.
Exceptions to this are Yearly, Date-to-Date, Monthly and Weekly ticket holders who may, for particular journeys, use that ticket
beyond the zone, zones or locations for which the ticket is valid by purchasing a 2 hour, Daily, Single or Day Return ticket for the additional zone, zones or locations.
The ‘extension ticket’ must be purchased before the journey.

I looked this up on the V/Line site, and calculated these times/fares for a weekday trip, assuming that off-peak ticket is OK to Geelong:Melbournetransport wrote:My Ideas for trips are:
Melbourne to Apollo Bay -no off peak ticket allowed between Geelong and Apollo Bay
Journey
Dep Southern Cross 9.00am
Arr Geelong 9.57am/Coach Dep 10.15am
Arr Apollo Bay 12.48pm
Return
Dep Apollo Bay 2.40pm
Arr Geelong 5.20pm/Train Dep 5.37pm
Arr Southern Cross 6.43pm
Fares
Southern Cross -> Geelong -> Apollo Bay -> Geelong -> Southern Cross (return trip) --- $60.40 full, $30 conc.
(these are from the new V/Line timetables, effective as of the 4th of September)
We would then have just under 2 hours in Apollo Bay (shorter than Flinders), however as the journey takes over 3 1/2 hours, I personally think it is a wee bit too short, and personally I prefer travel on regular buses rather than coaches. You could try putting that on the maybe file, but I probably wouldn't come.
This seems rather pointless (& tiring) to me - a bit like those competitions to ride every suburban line in a dayMelbourne to Geelong to Ballarat to Beindigo then Melbourne-( week day only long trip, all day)
I posted a list of proposed metropolitan trips in another thread, the furtherest one I posted was for route 788 to Portsea, maybe if I think of a date I'll post a thread (or alternatively, someone else could organise it instead .If people have any ideas for trip please post them here.
