Difficult right hand turns for bus routes

Post by Admet75 »

I think most bus drivers agree that turning right from certain major intersections is harder than turning left. I would like gauge opinion on bus routes which are hard for buses to turn right (without traffic lights) and there maybe some left hand turns that are hard to do. A good example is the route 415 which goes from Greenwith to Salsibury the right hand turn from Canterbury Drive to The Grove Way would possibly be one of the hardest I think.

However, there are probably plenty more. A good example is the Eastern suburbs bus routes 140s had to be rerouted to avoid difficult right hand turns because residents didn't want a change to some of their routes so of course the operator bowed to Eastern Suburbs NIMBYism to avoid those difficult right hand turns.

I think these hard right hand turns at major intersections could be eliminated by spending approximately $100,000 on traffic lights which would help improve on time running for buses but also speed up some services.

These are my opinions what do you think?

I think it depends on the route frequency, the time spent waiting to turn, and any potential danger to justify the cost. I know that the Blackwood and Eden Hills communities have, at times, been concerned about buses turning from Northcote Rd onto Shepherds Hill Rd. However, there are not enough services utilising this turn for traffic lights to make sense. Furthermore, it's only some school buses turning right as normal route services turn left. In saying that, these turns have, I'm assuming, been factored into the timetable as services rarely run late due to this. It's still annoying having buses regularly waiting for 10–15 minutes to turn out.

A few difficult right-hand turns (and a 'straight over') off the top of my head:

263 'up' - from Dunrobin Rd into Brighton Rd
265 'dn' - from Wattle Ave into Brighton Rd
W90 'up' - from Beaumont St into Daws Rd
W90 'dn' - from Wilpena Av into OG Rd
W90/91 - crossing Stevens Tce/Sixth Ave

830F/834/835 outbound turning right from Nairne Road into Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside, is a shocker.

839 clockwise at the Bollen Road/Flaxley Road/Hurling Drive dogleg can be a shermozzle at peak hours too.

Turning right on the 894 (and 195/196) from Hewett Ave to Main Road is difficult at peak hours too, although a train coming and lowering the boom gates usually fixed the issue.
First person on 822, 865 (2016 re-route).
Last person on 164, 867, 868

229 down: right turn from Muriel onto Montague Rd.
229 up: right turn from Sullivan onto Montague Rd.
Both of these are turning onto 70 km/h roads.

Do any drivers think the left-turn from Hanson onto First Ave, leading into Arndale Interchange needs looking at, especially with an artic. Then First Ave itself is a bit of a nightmare. Maybe fairly common and unlikely to be re-modelled ?
That's the way the whole thing started, silly but it's true ...
