Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
I see on Ch 10 News tonight that locals are concerned that the 40 limit in Surry Hills is "too fast" because there might be kids playing in Wimbo Park adjacent to the line

Had the usual Head of Residents Association who wants a 20kph speed limit and also claimed the P&C wanted it slowed.
And yet 50kph on Bourke St and 60kph on South Dowling is fine.

To be fair, it takes longer for light rail than car to decelerate from the same speed.moa999 wrote:https://twitter.com/lachlan_kennedy/sta ... 58177?s=19

However, 20km/h is ridiculosly slow.

Just more professional complainers, an expanding industry in Sydney. I hope they end up under their 20km/h tram.

From 40 or even 50km/hr, the track brakes on a modern LRV would nearly instantly stop the car - probably resulting in injuries onboard.stupid_girl wrote: To be fair, it takes longer for light rail than car to decelerate from the same speed.

What the locals need is a fence along the road next to the park then.

Going to be trees planted between the wide footpath and tracks.matthewg wrote:From 40 or even 50km/hr, the track brakes on a modern LRV would nearly instantly stop the car - probably resulting in injuries onboard.stupid_girl wrote: To be fair, it takes longer for light rail than car to decelerate from the same speed.

Tend to agree that an LRV could likely stop quicker than the regular trucks or vans barreling along South Dowling at 60kph.

Moore Park Bridge slowly being revealed with scaffolding removed around one lift tower and the main span. Still no stairs.
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
I like how they've built traffic lights facing the bus loop that no longer exists.
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Given the state of the project, probably easier than a variation.

Sydney light rail cost blows out to at least $2.7b after settlement

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Sydney's Northwest Metro = $8.3 Billion = just over $230,500,000 per km.
Sydney's South East trams = $3 Billion = $250,000,000 per km!
Newcastle trams = just under $245,300,00 per km
The light rail is costing more than a driverless train line per kilometre!
Canberra's light rail is only about a fifth of the cost or so per kilometre!
White lives matter too.

I feel there was too much arguments between the only contractor that wanted to agree to do this project (since other contractor back out due to the complexity of this project).
I feel if they stuck to the wire for the whole route, then its would be cost probs at least half the current cost.

Finishing off the original ESR and converting it to metro would have made a world more sense.

No chance. The APS section is under 20% of the total project.GazzaOak wrote: I feel if they stuck to the wire for the whole route, then its would be cost probs at least half the current cost.
The delays and cost issues with AusGrid are everywhere.
Id be very surprised if APS added more than 5% to the total project cost.
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
We will never know as Alstom are very careful to not itemize out the cost differential between overhead and the APS system. They only publish the whole system costs. (Usually including the trams, signalling and SCADA control in the package). This makes it very hard for external commentators to isolate exactly what the APS option costed the project.moa999 wrote: No chance. The APS section is under 20% of the total project.

This has lead to the people saying APS stands for 'Amazingly Pricey System'. (It really stands for 'Alimentation Par le Sol', which translates to 'feeding via the ground'). For francophobe English speaking markets, Alstom marking call it 'Aesthetic Power System'.
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Speed limit signs have now been erected through from Central to Bathurst Street, generally 30-40 km/h, 15km/h on the curves at either end of Eddy Avenue and 10km/h over the IWLR flat junction. No signs beyond, but given that the speed limit for road traffic through the shared zone is 10km/h, will presumably be the same. Much of the track appears to have had the temporary tar filling removed, so testing appears imminent.

Makes 40km/h school zones seem reasonable now. Try telling that to he numerous motorists I see flouting this limit daily.Linto63 wrote:Speed limit signs have now been erected through from Central to Bathurst Street, generally 30-40 km/h, 15km/h on the curves at either end of Eddy Avenue and 10km/h over the IWLR flat junction. What tool do they use to rip the tar out of the rail grooves? it looks pretty set in there.

The APS added about $200 million to the cost of the project, plus there will be significantly higher ongoing maintenance costs.

The last of the "smart poles" along Anzac Pde was installed during last week. The significance of the event was not left unrecorded:

As far as I can tell, there's still one outside Peters of Kensington to install. And there's definitely two in Moore Park on the western side of Anzac Pde near Dacey Ave also not installed.boronia wrote:The last of the "smart poles" along Anzac Pde was installed during last week. So make of that as you will.
VMS signage is up relating to wiring installation though - start of next week.

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
The photo is the new pole outside of Peters. They had to cut a section of awning away to install it. They are pouring the new footpath from there down to Duke St this weekend, so this evidence will be lost.hornetfig wrote: As far as I can tell, there's still one outside Peters of Kensington to install. There are 3 poles left to install here (Anzac NB carriageway on the golf course side). Hopefully will be done this week, and that will be the last of the catenary poles on the whole project.hornetfig wrote:And there's definitely two in Moore Park on the western side of Anzac Pde near Dacey Ave also not installed.
Cable pulling and overhead wiring on the K branch to follow shortly afterwards.

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
New CSELR trams have been sighted at Lilyfield depot as seen on another forum.
Were these delivered at Lilyfield, or is the track now active up to the IWRL junction allowing them to drive the trams all the way from Randwick? That would be a major milestone - surprised it's not been mentioned here if so.
Also, does anyone know the status of the APS installation - is it pretty much ready to go, or is there a lot more work to do on the power supply / controls side?
