These port-intermodal shuttle services seem like the perfect kind of freight service that would benefit from re-electrification.

I know the electrified freight lines extended into Enfield, but did they go further south to Marrickville and the Botany freight lines?rogf24 wrote:These port-intermodal shuttle services seem like the perfect kind of freight service that would benefit from re-electrification.
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
This is predominately a container flow, isn't it?rogf24 wrote:These port-intermodal shuttle services seem like the perfect kind of freight service that would benefit from re-electrification.
They would need new locomotives with 'last mile' diesel, so they didn't need separate shunters to work the yard at either end.
Using straddle cranes or even 'reach stackers' under the wires isn't going to work all that well.
You could do things like back the train with the locomotive right up to the edge of the wire, etc, but the moment you introduce any operational complexity, the operation gets wiped out by road transport.
I can't see anyone wanting to put the money into both buying new dual-mode locomotives and the money needed to repair the electrification on the goods lines. As much as I would like to see more electric traction, I can't see it happening any time soon. These shuttles will be using 'exotic' fuel internal combustion locomotives (Bio-Diesel, CNG, hydrogen) before electrification is considered.

Would it ever be feasible to have passenger rail along Port Botany freight line with a couple of intermediate stations ?
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
Something along the lines of the old mixed goods perhaps?Frosty wrote:Would it ever be feasible to have passenger rail along Port Botany freight line with a couple of intermediate stations ?
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
The Metropolitan Goods line was originally electrified from Enfield to Canterbury. It was extended to the junction at Dulwich Hill and onto White Bay in the 1960s and IIRC, to Marrickville and onto Tempe in the 1980s to allow electric coal trains to serve Port Kembla. Although not used for over 15 years, much of it remained intact until recently.Transtopic wrote:I know the electrified freight lines extended into Enfield, but did they go further south to Marrickville and the Botany freight lines?
Accommodating passenger trains would severely interrupt the freight operations. A fair bit of the line also runs through areas with little residential development.Frosty wrote:Would it ever be feasible to have passenger rail along Port Botany freight line with a couple of intermediate stations?
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
The goods line is now only electrified on the Down track between Campsie & Dulwich Hill and from the tunnel under the Bankstown line at Marrickville to where it joins with the Illawara local.

The doors closing tone on A36 is a bit distorted. It has a higher pitch.
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
The Bourke St & Eastern side Botany Rd entrance is going to close temporarily from November 12 to April 2019. Due to the nearby Crown development.
*Edit* Forgot to add it's Green Square Station.

Definitely Green Square based on the streets and development name.
Now that the crane is gone on the one30 Hyde Park development, can't be long until that entrance to Museum reopens.

The entrance is being integrated into the podium of the development itself, with the exisiting footpath obstructing entrance being demolished.Frosty wrote:The Bourke St & Eastern side Botany Rd entrance is going to close temporarily from November 12 to April 2019. Any update on the progress of Redfern Station upgrade/modernisation of the Gibson St exit? That was promised for "late 2018" - sure hope its coming, we're already there with less than two months to go before the year is over

T1 stopping at Newtown this weekend, I’m guessing because T2 is running at half the normal frequency.

Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
Very likely has to do with this current weekend's bustitution from Fairfield to Glenfield/Campbelltown since trains going to/from Leppington have been rerouted via the East Hills line (through Redfern, not the Airport).andy_centralcoast wrote:T1 stopping at Newtown this weekend, I’m guessing because T2 is running at half the normal frequency.
Not to mention that there is also trackwork on the clockwise City Circle, Bankstown Line's been corralled to Sydenham yet again along with the Liverpool branch also on trackwork, T1 to and from Penrith is running via the anti-clockwise City Circle and the T2 trains to and from Fairfield are using the intercity platforms.
Volgren all day, every day
Dear T80; If the decker's not a Volgren, I'm not interested.
Westbus Fairfield + Dandy Hub = perfection
Good old Collingwood forever.
Long live the potato cake.

The 8:45pm Central to Wyong continues as an empty train to Newcastle. Why wouldn’t this run as a passenger service?
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
The pattern of working, in the Weekday evening, is to run the "quarter to the hour" Central Coast Service to Wyong.andy_centralcoast wrote:The 8:45pm Central to Wyong continues as an empty train to Newcastle. Why wouldn’t this run as a passenger service?
Those Train Sets normally return Empty to Gosford.
The 2045 hours service Central to Wyong, runs Empty Wyong to Newcastle Monday to Thursday Nights, but returns to Gosford Friday Night.
This would be due to Stabling arrangements being different Monday to Thursday Nights.
Empty working is not always guaranteed to run due to, Track Possessions, or Train Control, possibly requiring the Train set elsewhere.
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
Canopies are now down and the platform has started to be pulled up. One of the two admin buildings beyond has been bailed with the other still having lead removed before it to goes. Sad to see that this along with thousands of tons of spoil from the tunnels will be carted away in thousands of truck movements when a couple of rail sidings could have been laid. London managed to remove 80% of the spoil from its nearly complete Crossrail project by rail with conveyor belts pumping it straight into waiting trains.boronia wrote:Work has started on the demolition of 14-15 platform at Central.
