NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
Valid point Fleet Lists maybe once B sets in service it would help deal with this issue without having to have more S sets running. An S set is no fun in a tunnel as I experienced on two trips on City Circle & Airport Line tunnels, they don’t smell great.

Has anyone noticed that Tangara windows are becoming really dirty? I am referring to the Hornsby ones in particular.

The current Timetable requires the following number of sets for H, V and T set types:-jpp42 wrote:What's the V set availability like? I know they don't run on the South Coast anymore but they could replace some runs on the central coast and cascade some extra H sets to the south?
4H sets: Central Coast 26, South Coast 21, availability 85% out of a Total Fleet of 55.
4V sets: Central Coast 20, Blue Mountains 21, availability 80% out of a Total Fleet of 51.
4T sets: Illawarra (T4) 56, North & West (T1) 32, South Coast 2, availability 81% out of a Total Fleet of 111.
Using more sets for the Timetable would mean cutting into the Repair and Maintenance cycle.
Recently, 1 x 8A set Roster was replaced by 1 x 8T set Roster, due to Waratah set A42 involved in an accident at Richmond in January.
Effectively, cutting into the Maintenance cycle of the Tangara Fleet.
Between the hours of 1600 and 1830 hours, Weekdays, the Timetable requires all Intercity Services departing Sydney to consist of 8cars.
To build-up the 1524 and 1554 hours South Coast services to 8car consist, to at least Wollongong, then return 4cars express back to Sydney would be too late for the Peak period Build-up.

How will the T set requirement change after ECRL closure?
Re: NSW Railway Observations - July to December 2018
There is an 18:45 departure from Central to Wyong that is an 8 car set. Surely the 15:24 can be built up to 8 cars that arrives at Wollongong 16:53 that surely is just enough time return 4 cars empty to Sydney to form 18:45 departure of the CCN.

So that would mean another driver (and guard?) has to be found to bring the empty train back?

T1 trains are messed up this morning, and there is no real time data due to a real-time outage. However, service info only recently listed "Delays on Sydney and NSW Services" even though the delays have been occurring for over 2 hours - poor form not updating passengers in a timely manner and I will put in another complaint.
There were no trains going up to Gordon for at least an hour this morning - the train departing Central at 9am terminated at North Sydney, there was around a half hour delay until the next train arrived and a crew replacement found, then the next train that was meant to go up to Gordon terminated at Lindfield. Did not wait around to find out what happened next or when the next service arrived.

The 1845 hours 8H Central Coast service is formed by 2 x 4H sets due 1739 hours (Empty ex Gosford) and 1826 hours (Passenger ex Newcastle).Frosty wrote:There is an 18:45 departure from Central to Wyong that is an 8 car set. As the South Coast services run from Bondi Junction between 1630 and 1830 hours, Weekdays, it would be difficult to utilise any 4H set at Sydney Terminal that may have some layover time.

Trains services across the Sydney Trains network are being impacted as a result of an IT issue across all transport agencies.
This has affected key operating systems that provide visibility of trains and their locations. Technicians are working to resolve the IT issue with systems starting to return to operation across the transport network.
That sounds fun!

The safety of our customers and staff remains our highest priority. Our staff are out on the network to ensure services continue to operate safely.
However, there are some delays across the network. We apologise to customers caught up by this issue and would like to assure them that we are working hard to maintain services.
Buses are supplementing services at some stations including Campbelltown, Glenfield, Penrith, Olympic Park and Richmond.
Sydney Trains is operating special services to Olympic Park from 2pm for customers attending the Bledisloe Cup and AFL this evening.
Direct services will operate from Central to Olympic Park, in addition to the T7 Olympic Park Line.
Due to trackwork bus services will also be provided to Central Coast & Newcastle Line customers.
Sydney Olympic Park Major Event Buses will start running between 3:05pm and 3:45pm, depending on the route.
We encourage you to leave early if attending events and allow extra time when travelling today.

I remember those "backward" days when the signalman could look out the window of the signal box to get visibility of the trains.J_Busworth wrote:https://transportnsw.info/alerts#/6023811

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance apologised for the chaos, saying "the unsatisfactory performance of the rail network over the past 24 hours is unacceptable.
"It is my understanding [that on Friday] evening a metallic balloon found its way into a tunnel and caused an overhead electricity wire to short," Mr Constance said. "This led to a major incident in which Sydney Trains had to disembark passengers in a tunnel.
It led one train driver to vent his frustration to passengers of a lack of information from management. "You won't see our management, but they want you to be reassured by me making announcements to tell you that we have no further information," the driver said. "Thank you."

That is partially right. Show a presence and that the guard? is there to assist patrons by keeping them up to date rather than dead silence.

Trains were disrupted on Friday night. When I was travelling, the announcements were reasonably good.
But on Sunday evening trains were running worse than half-hourly on the north shore line with no announcements or information

Update on transport network performance
Published19 Aug 2018
Train services are back to normal, with no further delays expected following two incidents on the rail network since Friday evening.
Transport for NSW would like to apologise to customers who were affected by the delays and information outages.
On Friday night services on the T1 North Shore Line became delayed due to an issue with the overhead wires at Wynyard.
As a result, one train became stuck mid-section outbound between Wynyard and the Harbour Bridge. This required a partial closure of the line between North Sydney and Central stations. Network Control and technicians worked to quickly implement a solution to safely assist customers off that train and to avoid causing further delays to people on nearby services.
Train services continued with buses supplementing services during the period of the disruption. Repairs to the overhead wires were carried out overnight and completed by Saturday morning.
Separately to this incident, technicians were conducting an IT upgrade to increase the speed and capacity across the network on Friday evening. However, an issue was discovered early Saturday and resulted in some operational systems taking time to come back online.
The systems affected included passenger information display screens and app updates, network control and crew allocation.
While IT system upgrades are common and rarely result in disruption, Transport for NSW will investigate the cause to prevent similar instances in the future.
Transport for NSW thanks customers for their patience and apologises to those who have been disrupted over the weekend.
Despite the delays, thousands of customers were delivered to major events, including the Katy Perry concert on Friday night and the AFL and Bledisloe Cup at Sydney Olympic Park last night with more than half of the 65,000 capacity crowded expected to have travelled by rail.
Planned track work on the T1 Northern and the Central Coast and Newcastle Lines will continue today as planned. For more information visit transportnsw.info or call 131 500.

Despite that update saying services have returned to normal with no further delays, lots of T6 and T7 trains are cancelled tonight "due to an operational issue".

Can you have a look at this thread and comment?

Sorry Mods.
It's totally off-topic in this thread, but this was the only way I thought that I might be able to draw attention to the issue of publicly available data, and those who choose to portray it in a user-friendly fashion (of which Jxeeno has proven to be quite capable and successful in the past)
As a supplement to this post, I often look at anytrip on my travels through the night-rider network late in the evenings, it certainly gives you a bit of context of whats happening.
After 5am, there are so many dots on the web page, it's mind boggling..
