Singapore -2018

Post by Tim Williams »

SINGAPORE - 2018

But first a little history
1. Steam Trams operated from 1885 to 1894
2. Electric trams from 1901 to 1927 (a lot of experimentation between trams & trolley buses)
3. Trolley Buses operated from 1927 to 1962 (skeleton service during Japanese invasion)
4. The tram operator was Singapore Electric Tramways then became Singapore Traction Company.
5. STC continued operating buses until the early 1970's along many Chinese bus companies in rural areas.
6. All Chinese and STC were amalgamated into 3 main operators - their bus equipment was dreadful.
7. The 3 were consolidated into 1 company in late 1973, being Singapore Bus Service (SBS Transit).
8. SMRT (or TIBS as originally) was forming in 1983 to provide, government approved, competition to SBS.

Land Transport Authority
1. LTA has organised the bus servicers into 14 packages which are organised as follows:
- 8 packages to remain with SBS Transit } re-tendering in 2 to 10 years
- 3 packages to remain with SMRT Buses }
- 1 package gained by Tower Transit (UK/Australian)
- 1 package gained by Go Ahead (UK)
-1 package gained by SBS Transit
2. Each package contains an operation of 300 to 500 buses. In total there are 351 bus routes.
3. LTA has purchased 1,550 buses as part of the Bus Enhancement Program in two tranches.
4. LTA controls routes, fares, keeps fare box and pays operators a commercial sum to operate.
5. The LTA will purchase all future buses and has purchased some existing operator buses.

Bus Operator Fleet Numbers
- SBS Transit 3,155
- SMRT Buses 1,476
- Tower Transit 377

The LTA not only manages bus services, but also road development.

It has a policy of restricting new car sales to the incremental capacity of the road network to accommodate them.

Has something happened to the Volvo B5RLEH/Volgren that was placed on trial with SBS Transit in 2015?
I'd post any important, bus-related links I had, but they're outdated anyways.

Withdrawn. It's trial resulted in a tender for 50 diesel hybrid buses which was awarded to Volvo. Deliveries of the Volvo 7900H Hybrid should begin soon.

Addendum:

Bukit Merah contract retained by SBST and will expire in November 2023.

Sembawang and Bulim contracts recently put out to tender. Bulim was gained by Swan Transit in 2016 while Sembawang was operated by SMRT on a negotiated contract.

Electric buses procured and put into service on selected routes earlier this week.

SBST locked in a bitter lawsuit launched by several underpaid drivers, reminiscent of the 2018-19 Transdev strikes in Perth that ultimately resulted in the loss of Joondalup contract to Swan Transit.

As far as I know, their may be different computer systems and the wheelchair ramp on the SBS model was manual rather than 2245's auto, as it was an ex-Volvo demo. Otherwise, it had the same specs.

Fleetlists now shows ex-CDC Wyndham 138 (SBS model) is now with Dion's Bus Service, Fairy Meadows NSW - the same operator of ex-2245.
