You can see on the aerials a large, long block of flats at an odd angle to the rest of the development because it is on the alignment, rather tlike the blocks of flats on the old Randwick ROW.

Note that there was no sinking fund for the tramways and the profits were pinched for consolidated revenue and then after WW2 they moaned that they couldn't afford to repair and update it. Typical government bastards!

Just like the 3x3 fuel levy that was supposed to be spent directly on urgent road upgrades in the aftermath of the Kempsey bus crash.
Only a fraction was traceable to road construction, the rest was absorbed into general fuel excise. Intended to be for three years only, ran for eleven.

Another remnant gone.....I was sweating on recovering the rosette from the Metro demolition site at ~254 Pitt Street, but the whole wall's gone. You have to be quick!

NARRABEEN.
There appears to be a tram wrapped in black plastic ~100m south of the famous Narrabeen tram waiting shed. What's the story?

It is one of the trams from Rozelle tramsheds prior to the redevelopment there. Has been restored by the council.

A lovely bit of original tramways rail has popped its head up through a pothole at the intersection of Flinders Sreet and Moore Park Road!

That's surprising because the intersection was pretty thoroughly trenched during Eastern Distributor construction.

Bit of rail appearing through a rather deep pothole on Castlereagh St just before Hay St.
Ringer of bus bells and tram gongs.

After much searching for a photo of UNSW in the days of the trams along Anzac Pde, I found this 1954 photo in the UNSW archives showing the tram stop and the first building on the campus under construction:

That's Barker St going over the hill on the right.

At around the same time, they went to the trouble of building a tram platform at the City Rd stop at Sydney University, capable of holding a 250-passenger tramset, only to rip it out a couple of years later when 70-passenger buses (cough) "replaced" the trams - and not long before all the baby boomers arrived and blew university enrolment figures through the roof. Absolute crime to remove them. I wish the UNSW would be turned back into a semi rural looking plot of land. More intelligence on that land back then.

That was the former Kensington racecourse. Behind the camera on the other side of Anzac Pde is the set of tram turning loops for the racecourse, now a university carpark and NIDA.

The Anzac Pde line originally terminated here in 1900 with turning loop sidings here and at Randwick Racecourse. It was extended to La Perouse in 1902. It was initially steam-operated and electrified in 1905.

^ Anzac Pde heading South just before High St there is a sub station and a drive way into Randwick Racecourse which links onto an outer ring roadway around the racecourse that also connects with High St Gate 2 - as a wild guess was this a loop or near the loop that you were talking about.

No, the loop sidings were on the west campus where there is now a large university car park and, at the northern end, NIDA. On the other side of the road from the Roundhouse.

Here is another image from UNSW Archives, a plan showing Kensington Racecourse and Randwick Park, now the site of UNSW. On what is now the west campus you can see the tramway turning loop sidings that served the racecourse from 1900 to 1940; also the terminus of the line until it was extended to La Perouse in 1902.

^^^^^^The "remnant" is still buried beneath the Anzac Parade bitumen, I think! See my Aug. 03, 2009 post on page 23 of this thread regarding curved slab joints.

There's an item on this in today's (?) Manly Daily newspaper. Perhaps the black plastic has come off?

It's one of the trams from Rozelle.

How obscure can a "remnant" be? The 3-row brick arch over the tram doorway to Darlinghurst Police Station on Forbes Street has been re-located about 5 metres north, over the entrance to the car park. The former tram doorway, nearest Taylor Square, now has a straight lintel above the roller shutter.
Still in Forbes Street, are the two vehicles in Forbes Street, shown in the 1943 aerials, trams or buses?
Answering my own question - they can't be trams, as other aerial pix around that time show the absence of poles for the overhead on the western side of Forbes St.
