Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
But there's more trains south of Chatswood now. They just come from the ECRL instead of Gordon.

7 news aired a story tonight showing testing of the new driverless trains for the North West

They say it could be open for passengers within 12 months, before the next state election.

How much of the track is active?
And have they announced an actual closure date for Epping - Chatswood yet.. think last I had seen was still late 2018 for 6-7 months

Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
I think they will start after Macquaire Uni finished at the end of the year. At least the first 2-3 months won't be as hugely disruptive if they start the closure after the uni finishedmoa999 wrote:How much of the track is active?

But the channel 7 news story said it could be taking passengers in a year... that implies the shutdown would start in 4-5 months.

Even 7 months could be very optimistic for the conversion to take place.

As far as I understand they need to install PSDs, separate the electrical supply from Sydney Trains, and then perform systems testing (signals etc.)
Most of the equipment installation for the signal system should have already taken place during possessions.

I would be very surprised if they don't find a way to have it open before the state election in late March 2019grog wrote:But the channel 7 news story said it could be taking passengers in a year... that implies the shutdown would start in 4-5 months.

That was always the intention from my observation. But perhaps they're having second thoughts, because they're unsure about the public reaction, particularly with the disruption caused by the pending closure of the ECRL for conversion to metro.ed24 wrote:I would be very surprised if they don't find a way to have it open before the state election in late March 2019grog wrote:But the channel 7 news story said it could be taking passengers in a year... that implies the shutdown would start in 4-5 months.

September. The replacement bus fleet isn’t built yet.
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Since they'll be replacing trains, they'll look something like this, right?Daniel wrote:September. The replacement bus fleet isn’t built yet.
Wouldn't want any inefficiencies slowing up such a large flow of people.
Or at the very least, this:
N series of course and TfNSW/RTBU lifting all-door loading ban in an unprecedented spirit of cooperation and moving into modern times.
Surprise me Daniel!
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Can't imagine the RTBU coming into it. They'll be private operators won't they?
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
No chance sorry tonyp, specs demanded were 12.5s, two door city buses.

The ECRL temporary transport plan on the Sydney Metro website hasn't been updated since 2014. The website still says "Over the next few years, we will continue to refine the temporary transport plan."
However the community consultation said:
- 120 fully accessible air-conditioned buses will operate, with at least one bus every 10 minutes.
- A standard train fare will be charged on bus services used for the Epping to Chatswood line upgrade.
- A joint venture between Transdev NSW and Hillsbus will operate the Epping to Chatswood bus services.
- Road and intersection upgrades, including bus priority measures, will be completed before the upgrade begins.
- Customers from stations between Normanhurst and Cheltenham will be able to travel to the city without changing trains on the Northern Line via Strathfield.
In December 2017, Macquarie University told students that Transport for NSW had advised the precise date of the train station closure is likely to be made public in February.

What's going to happen to the majority of passengers who quite patently won't fit on the buses? Will they be driving?

Maths. Will there be 20 x 12 metre buses replacing every train to provide the same capacity (at least in peaks)?Glen wrote:How do you know they won't fit?tonyp wrote:What's going to happen to the majority of passengers who quite patently won't fit on the buses?
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Are you being tongue-in-cheek or are you expecting that every person who currently travels through the ECRL from the Upper Northern line to the CBD is going to follow the same geographical path and change from train to bus to train?
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
No, I'm thinking of the strong two-way commuting that occurs on the section between Chatswood and Epping on its own - being a corridor that has major residential, university, retailing and business. That is, people who get on and off between Chatswood and Epping.grog wrote:Are you being tongue-in-cheek or are you expecting that every person who currently travels through the ECRL from the Upper Northern line to the CBD is going to follow the same geographical path and change from train to bus to train?
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
But you would agree that this will not require 20 x 12m bus services per replaced train service, right?
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Yes of course, as people will take alternative routes if they don't have to get on and off between Epping and Chatswooed, but still quite a number! I wouldn't rate acquisition of a fleet of two-door 12 metre buses as an adequate action plan.grog wrote:But you would agree that this will not require 20 x 12m bus services per replaced train service, right?

They also have to finish the widening of Delhi Road.Daniel wrote:September. The replacement bus fleet isn’t built yet.
Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Good point. The Macquarie Park Bus Priority and Capacity Improvements stage 1 work started on Jan 15 and is scheduled for 36 weeks (http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/pro ... 017-11.pdf) which takes us to the middle of September, so looks pretty likely that this is the date.Daniel wrote:September. 7 months from mid-September is mid-March, so if they are looking to have it open around Feb, before the March 23 election, they must be betting on not needing a full 7 months.
Remember that there was talk of ECRL running as a shuttle for a few months before the shutdown, so this could happen in June/July - this could potentially when we see the next new timetable, which would more or less be the post-metro timetable.

Re: NSW Future Rail Plan - NWRL/Metro/Harbour Crossing
Correct. What many people don't realise is that the maximum patronage flow to the Macquarie Park stations is actually in the contra-peak direction from the CBD and Lower North Shore, not from the Northern Line. That's why extra services were introduced in the morning and evening contra-peak direction between the CBD and Epping.tonyp wrote:No, I'm thinking of the strong two-way commuting that occurs on the section between Chatswood and Epping on its own - being a corridor that has major residential, university, retailing and business. Existing commuters from Normanhurst to Cheltenham will still be able to travel directly to the CBD via Strathfield, without the need to change trains, contrary to some views expressed by those in denial, who still insist that you will have to catch three trains. They will not need the replacement bus services, unless they are travelling to Chatswood or any of the Macquarie Park stations in between, which I suggest would be the minority. Even those bound for North Sydney would be better off to stay on the train, as all indications so far are that they will continue through the CBD to the North Shore. They're not going to save any time by switching to the buses.
Where there could be a problem is for commuters bound for Macquarie Park by bus interchanging from St Leonards or Chatswood in the morning peak. I can remember when I used to drive to work to the Eastern Suburbs on Epping Road before the ECRL opened and buses in the contra-peak direction headed for Macquarie Park were jam packed. That was nearly a decade ago and with all of the development that's taken place since then, particularly with the opening of the ECRL, it's going to take a lot more buses than it did then, which will only exacerbate the current traffic congestion. I hope they've thought it through, otherwise it's going to be an unmitigated disaster and doesn't bode well for the Bankstown Line shutdown.
