Back in the days before the island was "renovated", some charity group got approval to hold an evening fund-raising function there. At the time, access around the island was considered unsafe due to lack of lighting, so two coaches were chartered to take guests between the ferry wharf and the venue on the other side. They were ferried over from Woolwich.

You really could just station a cheap unregistered bus as it's not part of the road system is it? A bit like a farm vehicle. Would save having to barge a road registered vehicle in.

That was the easiest option at the time. Leaving anything there unattended would have been a security risk. There was no real plan for any redevlopment at that point of time.
