Re: NSW Ferry Discussion
Transport Info has a new timetable for the Manly Ferry from the 29th January which appears identical to the current one. The date in January appears to be the one on which the normal timetable would resume after the summer timetable but no summer timetable has been posted.

NRMA acquires Manly Fast Ferry from founders in attempt to broaden investments
Matt O'Sullivan
The NRMA has acquired Manly Fast Ferry for an undisclosed sum from its founders, underlining the motoring group's plans to increase its exposure to tourism.
While it was early days, the motoring group indicated it was eager to expand the ferry company's routes from Sydney to as far afield as the Central Coast and Wollongong.

Manly Fast Ferry secured the sole rights several years ago to operate fast-ferry services between Circular Quay and Manly, a journey which takes on average about 18 minutes.
And with a fleet of 10 vessels, the company also operates regular ferry services to other locations such as Darling Harbour and Watsons Bay, as well as whale watching and sightseeing tours.

NRMA chief executive Rohan Lund said the "significant investment" in the ferry operator underlined its increasing focus on becoming one of the largest operators of transport and tourism services.
"We take it for granted because we live here but the harbour is the No.1 thing [tourists] want to experience," he said.

Manly Fast Ferry's founders, Richard and Will Ford, will retain an economic interest in the ferry operator, and stay on in their respective roles of chief executive and chief operating officer.

Mr Lund said inner parts of western Sydney via Parramatta River and the Central Coast presented opportunities for the operator to expand.

"As roads become more congested, it is a more obvious way to get around," he said. "We've got to unlock more boats and that means more capital and more routes."
Manly Fast Ferry carries more than 11,000 people a day between Manly and Sydney's central business district, up from about 1500 people a day when it started services in 2008.
The NRMA plans to give the group's members discounts to ride on the Manly Fast Ferry services but said it was too early to reveal more details.
Another private operator SeaLink, the owner of Captain Cook Cruises, has been expanding its ferry services in Sydney. It began fast ferry services seven days a week from Manly to Barangaroo on the western side of Sydney's CBD several months ago.
The NSW government has also spent almost $52 million on buying six new catamaran ferries for its fleet, which are run by the city's main private operator, Harbour City Ferries.

The summer timetable for Manly ferries seems to be scrapped now that MV Narrabeen was taken out of service for investigation, after collision with a yacht. Doesn’t seem like it should take that long for the investigation though?

How do you know how long it will be out of service?
Has there been any official notification of this?

Sydney-Wollongong ferry plan not all plain sailing
Andrew PearsonAndrew Pearson
Local News
The NRMA doesn’t know when the service would become a reality, how it would work, or the time it would take to travel to Sydney – yet.
But, the motoring organisation has flagged Illawarra commuters could soon be able to catch a ferry to the NSW capital.
The idea of an ocean link between Wollongong and Sydney has been floated after the NRMA acquired the Manly Fast Ferry for an undisclosed sum last week.
While it’s still early days, the group indicated it was eager to expand the ferry company’s routes from Sydney to as far afield as the Central Coast and Wollongong.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury told the Mercury on Friday that Wollongong’s location made it an attractive ferry-route option, as did the potential to “open up the region to more tourism opportunities” and provide a faster, more efficient connection to Sydney.
Mr Khoury said the travel time between the two locations via ferry was “not even close” to being determined.
“It would obviously need a different fleet of vehicle, because you’d be going into the open ocean,” he said.
“It’s not at that stage yet, we only bought it yesterday [Thursday], but the intention is to use waterways to lift the load that is currently ... on roads and public transport routes.”
Manly Fast Ferry secured the sole rights several years ago to operate fast-ferry services between Circular Quay and Manly, a trip which takes on average about 18 minutes.
And with a fleet of 10 vessels, the company also operates regular ferry services to other locations such as Darling Harbour and Watsons Bay, as well as whale watching and sightseeing tours.
Mr Khoury said most Australians lived on the coast or along waterways and the NRMA saw the acquisition of the ferry operator as “a growth opportunity to open up other parts of not just Sydney, but the state and beyond”.
“While there aren’t concrete plans in place yet, that is certainly part of our long term view,” he said, adding the waterways were effectively “blue highways”.
Manly Fast Ferry's founders, Richard and Will Ford, will retain an economic interest in the ferry operator, and stay on in their respective roles of chief executive and chief operating officer.
NRMA chief executive Rohan Lund said the “significant investment” in the ferry operator underlined its increasing focus on becoming one of the largest operators of transport and tourism services.

Re: NSW Ferry Discussion
While I agree that it’s more likely that the yacht is solely at fault, there are certainly reasons that this might not be the case :hornetfig wrote:It's almost impossible for the yacht to not be found liable.Swift wrote:Not possible for the yacht to be found liable?
- overtaking situation - the “priority over sail” right given to the ferry only applies for crossing situations. If it’s deemed that the ferry is overtaking the yacht, the ferry must give way.
- the ferry (like any vessel) has an obligation to avoid collision regardless of who had the right of way (“stand on” vessel officially). If it’s deemed that the ferry master should have anticipated the collision and could have taken more action to avoid it, they will be held jointly at fault, even if it was the yacht’s fault for sailing in front of the ferry.
- some mitigating circumstances like an equipment failure aboard the yacht may help explain why they didn’t change course as required. This is less likely but certainly possible.
Re: NSW Ferry Discussion
When you see how many leisure craft criss-cross right in front of the ferries it's lucky there are not more accidents.

Today, there are THREE vehicular ferries on the Woolwich - Cockatoo Is. run. This may be some kind of record.

Noted the sixth Emerald class ferry tied up (not in use) at Barangaroo. Was carrying "Ferry McFerryface" on a sticker below the bridge, but "Emerald 6" on the sides of the bow and the stern.

With a cabinet reshuffle rumoured for early in the new year, should there be a change in transport minister, the name will probably quietly disappear if its chief backer leaves the building, much to the chagrin of the under 5-year olds.Glen wrote:Only temporarily, according to that film clip.mandonov wrote:To meet the MUA halfway, it will be Emerald 6 officially but nicknamed Ferry McFerryface.

Is the island that large an area to need a bus to take people around on it?? Maybe State Transit should station a bus there.
