Better than batteries
Better than batteries
To keep the lights on 24/7 I think rather than building coal fired power stations or battery or hydro storage back up it would be cheaper and better to just have diesel generators placed locally that only kick in for short periods when needed.

Re: Better than batteries
Simple and easy solution and way cheaper is if we stop giving away all our natural gas overseas and have cheaper gas fired mini plants around the country ,eddy wrote:To keep the lights on 24/7 I think rather than building coal fired power stations or battery or hydro storage back up it would be cheaper and better to just have diesel generators placed locally that only kick in for short periods when needed.
Colongra on the Central Coast can be up and running to full capacity in 20 minutes , has actually been tested
to full capacity in 12 minutes , instead of coal fired which takes 24 hours from start to full load and then sits burning coal when not needed.
Coal fired power station don't have much future here, we generate from wind 10 to 1 compared to solar ,
4000 jobs added this year alone and with the push for more renewables which are now cheaper than expensive coal why would you invest.
New wind farms are being built at a levelised cost of energy at $61-118 per megawatt-hour.
That compared with $74-90 for gas, $78-140 for solar and $134-203 MW-hour for coal-fired plants.
Re: Better than batteries
I would agree with you but I do have my doubts about risking the farmland in years to come with gas drilling but if they want to bring shiploads in from off shore WA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZwtxHta9AE I would have no problem.

I went out to Bulga open cut this week and saw the mountains they have to shift with huge machines and when you add that to the maintenance cost of a coal fired power station that could become a stranded asset within 10 years there is no wonder investors do not want to risk it.

Evidently they want to miss the hurricane season so they will not begin production untill 2018 but I believe it will increase the availability of gas and greatly drop the price then. http://www.ecoiko.eu/shells-prelude-flng-to-start-2018/CCCC wrote:Simple and easy solution and way cheaper is if we stop giving away all our natural gas overseas and have cheaper gas fired mini plants around the country ,eddy wrote:To keep the lights on 24/7 I think rather than building coal fired power stations or battery or hydro storage back up it would be cheaper and better to just have diesel generators placed locally that only kick in for short periods when needed.

Tower colliery or Appin west as it is now called has had a number of gas fired diesel Cat generators for ten years now and they are very cheap and can be put anywhere for short time backup. http://infohouse.p2ric.org/ref/04/03317.htm and http://www.resourcesandenergy.nsw.gov.a ... generation

interesting links there.

Watched insiders this morning and all Labor has to do is say nope and nobody would risk investing in any sort of coal fired power station.
The LNG storage cavern at Botany holds 65,000t so perhaps Malcolm could build a gas fired power station there and ship it from the Prelude when it starts up next year.

Even if there was money to build a coal fired power station , I really can't see it getting through all the environmental controls these days.
There would be many groups these days taking on a new coal fired power station to all the courts in the land.
Yes its a good base load power supply but when not required just sits there burning coal , where gas fired is a matter of switching on and off
you can't do that to coal. Natural gas for base load is the way to go ,not coal or CSG (coal seam gas)
Just doesn't make sense to me the money being poured into mining , the extraction , the transport , then wastage (ash, pollution), when done right
with renewables and gas this has to be fore cost effective in the long run.
Re: Better than batteries
I would rather see LNG generators than batteries or hydro storage as they increase the supply overall.
Amazing the Shell guy said nothing about the Prelude coming on line within a year and it may be just as cheap to ship LNG in rather than building expensive pipes everywhere and risking our farmland in 100 years when the drill pipes rust.

But is this gas contracted to other ends of the earth leaving us with nothing but a few miserable royalties ???eddy wrote:Not long now and the price will tumble I thinkeddy wrote:I would agree with you but I do have my doubts about risking the farmland in years to come with gas drilling but if they want to bring shiploads in from off shore WA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZwtxHta9AE I would have no problem.
