There is a Nine News report on the Metronet saying that the McGowan government wants to build new train lines. I know that the McGowan government wants to remove the level crossings on Fremantle, Midland and Armadale lines.

METRONET progress on track

Monday, 21 August 2017
  • Business cases for Yanchep and Thornlie METRONET rail projects submitted to Infrastructure Australia
  • Thousands of jobs set to be created over life of METRONET projects
  • Detailed planning for land around new train stations underway
  • Further METRONET projects being planned and prepared for tender
Business cases for two key METRONET projects - the Joondalup line extension to Yanchep and the Thornlie Line Extension - have now been submitted to Infrastructure Australia.

The two McGowan Government METRONET commitments are crucial for supporting Perth's continued population growth and creating new local jobs.

The METRONET team is now working on detailed project definition plans for the 13.8 kilometre extension of the Joondalup Line to Yanchep and the 17.5km connection between Thornlie and Cockburn stations. Both projects will be delivered over a four-year period.

The Yanchep extension will include construction of three stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep - each of which will be an accessible and vibrant community asset.

Meanwhile, the Thornlie Line Extension will have new stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road in Canning Vale.

Importantly, the METRONET team will be undertaking detailed land use planning around new stations to include appropriate density and a variety of land uses, while value capture opportunities will be identified.

An industry briefing was held on July 26 to familiarise local engineering and design consultancies with METRONET's land use strategies, priorities, timeframes and likely scopes of work, to assist them in preparing future bids.

There was also a recent community forum for METRONET in Harrisdale to gauge local views on the Thornlie Line Extension.

The METRONET team will soon be issuing its first two tenders, to assist with the business cases and Project Definition Reports for the proposed Karnup Station and bus depot, along with the new Midland and Bellevue stations.

Further requests for quotations and tenders for other elements of METRONET will be released progressively over the next 12 months.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

"The package of METRONET projects represents one of the most ambitious public transport and planning initiatives in Western Australian history.

"This is a plan that will revolutionise travel in Perth while creating countless jobs and apprenticeship opportunities for Western Australians."

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The McGowan Government is getting on with delivering our METRONET projects as quickly as possible.

"Projects of this scale require significant planning, legislative changes and approvals, and we're determined to be on the front foot with our Stage One METRONET projects.

"We are also keen to provide opportunities for local businesses with the capability to help us plan and develop these projects, so they can be planned effectively, delivered quickly and built well, in WA, for the benefit of our community."

Government progress on Bellevue extension and Midland Station relocation project

Tuesday, 14 November 2017
  • Tender released for concept planning for METRONET project
  • Part of the Government's commitment in the 2017-18 State Budget
  • Follows recent release of tender for planning and engineering services for the Morley-Ellenbrook Line
  • METRONET continues to forge ahead with the release of a key tender for work on the extension of the Midland Line to Bellevue and the relocation of Midland Station.

This week the METRONET team released a tender for specialist consultants to get involved in the concept planning stages of the project.

It involves the relocation of Midland Station to integrate with surrounding development and the ongoing revitalisation of the Midland Activity Centre, and extending the railway line to Bellevue to enhance access for the surrounding community.

The work to be undertaken will include an options analysis, preliminary land use investigations, planning and concept designs, including any grade separations, stations and surrounding urban precincts. This work will be supported by the successful tenderer.

Further tenders for other elements of METRONET will be released progressively over the next 12 months.

Members of the public and interested stakeholders will soon be able to find out more about METRONET transport projects, land use planning and more at a new dedicated METRONET website.

Meanwhile, local businesses are encouraged to bid for the works at http://www.tenders.wa.gov.au

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This tender is part of the McGowan Government's commitment in the 2017-18 State Budget to plan for key METRONET priority projects, along with construction funding for the Thornlie-Cockburn Link, Yanchep Rail Extension and Forrestfield-Airport Link.

"This project has been on the drawing board for many years but we are committed to making it a reality and this tender is the first step.

"Extending the train line to Bellevue and relocating Midland Station means residents from the Swan region to the Hills and beyond will have improved access to the CBD, new stadium and more."

Is there mapping of this extension available online? Bellevue seems like hardly any extension at all.

Is the extension's general future direction along the old rail alignment eastwards into the hills, or alongside the mainline northwards towards the urban area around Swan View to Stratton?

Bellevue could have merit as a largely park & ride station for people coming from Mundaring etc.

This would relieve pressure on Midland which should become a dense transit-oriented centre with less parking than now.

Yes, that is the intention. Less parking and traffic through the city centre to help facilitate more intensive transit-oriented development. Bellevue would appear to be purely park and ride (maybe some intensive uses immediate adjacent) with buses continuing to serve Midland Station. The new depot and maintenance facility would be located between the two stations.

So is there any prospect of the suburban line being extended further east along the old alignment or NE along the mainline? To do the former of course it would have to cross over the mainline.

Not really any scope for it. Growth in the region is mostly limited to the Midland Activity Centre and the areas to the east and north east are generally semi-rural (Apart from Stratton and Swan View) in nature. Hence there is a higher reliance on park 'n' ride in the region as it is difficult for viable bus services to penetrate every populated part of the region. Where there are regular bus services, they will continue to be the best way to serve the area (as feeders to the rail line).
