Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Corridor.

I thought that this would be an interesting read as it covers different modes of transport in an ever growing and congested part of Sydney. I thought that Campsie had been forgotten about when it came to trying to reduce traffic congestion and improving public transport. Does anyone remember the Strathfield Town Plan that was released in 2014? That had some fanciful ideas such as an underground bus interchange and underground pedestrian walkways, it appeared over the top and very expensive. I have just had a look at the Strathfield Council website which displays 'Strathfield Town Centre' being upgraded, all it involved was some plumbing, footpath surface work, electrical, furniture and landsaping in which the period of time was only from September 2016 - December 2016.

Campsie.
* Upgrading the West Campsie by-pass. (pages 2, 3, 9 & 21)
This would be achieved by having to acquire some land to link the Southern end of Loch St intersecting with Evaline St through to Orissa St - intersecting with Claremont St. Currently there already is a small piece of land reservation of which I have always wondered what it was going to be used for, tis land reservation is Lot 126 and Lot 128 which is located at the Southern end of Loch St - slightly offset towards the East on Evaline St. There is one sign saying "No trespassing" and another sign advising against illegal dumping by order of the Commissioner of Main Roads.

* Upgraded 'Interchange' at Campsie Station.
* Increased service levels for route 487.
* Bus priority measures along Beamish St, Seventh Ave & Fifth Ave which would benefit routes 400, m41 & 942 (there is a minor typo - bus route 409 should read as 400)
* West Campsie by-pass.
The completion of the western ‘Campsie Bypass’ at Loch Street will improve regional vehicle and bus connections to major roads and employment destinations and pedestrian amenity along Beamish Street.

There was a feature on one of the TV news last week, where Bankstown Council was pushing for the new Metro station and a couple of km of approach to be underground, to remove the current split of its CBD.

Bankstown would no doubt be amenable to a similar pleasant treatment to Subiaco in Perth. Bankstown is already in a little bit of cutting. Or it could be a high wall of building that actually divides the centre, Sydney style! The Subiaco approach:

Whether the Bankstown locals would appreciate it is another matter. Subiaco is upmarket like Leichardt or Paddington.

A big different is that Bankstown's going to much bigger than Subi and the station will have more than 2 platforms, maybe other stations would look like that but not Bankstown. The last picture looks a bit like Wolli Creek's airport platforms.

I was referring more to the way that the Subiaco work created a light and open and barrier-free public space or square across the station that draws the two halves of the centre together, this perhaps being what Bankstown Council desires.

Apparently, the local council wants to bury parts of the Bankstown Line so that will help fulfil your dream of connecting the two sides tonyp.

Joondaloop in Perth has a similar layout. A sunken railway line surrounded by a bus interchange and a large Westfield shopping centre, with good cross connectivity

I had Joondalup in mind as an example but its environs are the brutalist ones of a blank-walled shopping mall. Subiaco represents the creation of a pleasant town square surrounded by traditional low-scale buildings with shops etc.

There's a public meeting at Campsie's Orion Centre, Beamish St, just down from the station AT 3PM TOMORROW, SUNDAY, 20.8.17.
Apparently organised by opponents of the over-development of the Sydenham - Bankstown corridor, including opposition to the Metro conversion.
