New tram stops and extra funding to ease traffic problems announced for North Terrace extension.
Adelaide 'Advertiser' July 21, 2017.
ADELAIDE’S tram extension work will begin this weekend with an extra $10m funding for around-the-clock work blitz to minimise traffic disruption.
The Advertiser can reveal the first map of the project with the exact locations of the four new stops.
Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said night works for the project would begin on Sunday, after the major contract was awarded to Downer York Joint Venture.
He said the location of four new stops would advantage travellers to the Festival Plaza along King William Rd as well as North Terrace stops adjacent to the museum, Adelaide University and East End.
The total cost of the project has been increased from $70m to $80m, mainly to implement the 24/7 work cycle at off peak times, and work is expected to be completed early next year.
“An intense program of works to deliver the project in the shortest possible time-frame by taking advantage of working 24 hours a day, seven days a week in school holiday periods at times when road traffic is at its quietest,’’ Mr Mullighan said.
Route map of Adelaide's expanded tram system.
“The additional funding will also go towards a major construction blitz which will involve more night-time and weekend work to minimise the impacts to peak hour and daytime traffic, and reduce disruptions to businesses and tram services,” he said.
“Given the number of major events occurring in and around the CBD, the South Australian Government’s priority will be to minimise the disruptions along North Terrace and King William Road.’’
Night works to locate underground services and utilities along North Terrace and King William Road will begin on Sunday, along with geotechnical investigations.
RAA senior manager of road safety Charles Mountain welcomed the funding to reduce disruption to motorists.
“We know that major road works projects, such as the current O’Bahn works, do have an impact on traffic movement,” said Mr Mountain.
“The more work that can be done outside of peak traffic periods, the better that is for motorists.
“It will shorten the construction period and allow people to go about their business without too many disruptions.
“We just hope consideration has been made for residents along North Terrace to manage noise levels and ensure they can still access their properties easily.”

The extra funding will also increase the scope of the project, providing for a major rebuild of the King William Road/North Terrace intersection and providing additional turning movements for tram services to accommodate future stages of tram works.
“In addition, the tram track along King William Road will be extended a further 100 metres north than originally proposed, which will result in improved and safe disability access and enhanced pedestrian connectivity between the Riverbank Precinct and Anzac Walk,’’ Mr Mullighan said.
Major works on the intersection of North Terrace and King William Road have been scheduled for early January 2018, to minimise the impact to major events.

As much as I love the idea of bringing trams back, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Also, why are they building a tram that terminates at the old RAH, when they could have sent them up to Adelaide Oval and have a service that will see decent usage.

I suspect it is a part of the reviatlisation of the (current) RAH site; the provision of a tram service to the area makes the site more attractive to potential investors. Just look at the urban renewal which has happened and will be happening along King William St (South) and Port Rd (and within close proximity).

Re: City Tram Extension Stage 1
Passing along North Tce today; the extent of the works seemed to be the marking on the roadway of the underground services between Pulteney St and East Tce. It looks like the footpath (Southern side) along North Tce between Pulteney St and Frome St may be narrowed slightly to accommodate the trams. A couple of markings outside the RAH would suggest that a few original sleepers from the MTT tram tracks may still be in the roadway.

I remember when they first extended the Glenelg line from Victoria Square to along North Tce, they found lots of old MTT rails and sleepers. Not sure where they ended up.

Re: City Tram Extension Stage 1
Something that has just occurred to me... On the DPTI's promotional video for the tramline extensions at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8fzqYDfPqo it states that the wires will be supported from the existing light poles (similar to Jetty Rd and King William St (South). At the RAH end of North Tce, between Frome St and East Tce, almost all of the light poles are old MTT poles dating from 1909. I wonder if these poles will be used or if new poles are to be erected in the area. The video shows new poles in the area; but it needs to be remembered that it is an artists impression only.
In other news, On North Tce between East Tce and Pulteney St, some works have occurred; parts of the central median have been removed (closest to East Tce) and between Frome St and Pulteney St parts of the Southern footpath have been dug up (and reinstated with bitumen)

Re: City Tram Extension Stage 1
Wires being supported by light poles may be just for saving budget, so I do not think they will upgrade existing poles.
I wonder, why DPTI chose side platforms for the 4 new stops, instead of island platforms like others in the City?
Another interesting thing is the turnouts at King William St and North Tce intersection, lacking several directions. There will be a lot of limitations on future tram route designs.

Re: City Tram Extension Stage 1
As the opposition pointed out-"it is all about saving money". The Transport Minister refuted this by saying that it would have created chaos for traffic moving through the intersection? Yet we have buses doing right-hand turns that often holds up traffic? So what's the difference?

Re: City Tram Extension Stage 1
Side platforms have at least one advantage; substitute (or even regular) buses can use them if the need arises. The existing island platforms have their restrictions; to extend the platform requires track rebuilding whereas this has been accommodated for in the proposals for the new extension. I've also seen some to be rather full at times; this may post safety issues at times. Centre poles require more road real estate to implement; the markings I have seen suggest that there is little reduction to the footpaths - only at stop locations and on the Southern side only.

Bus Stops R1, S1, T1 and T2 on North Tce have been moved slightly, with stops T1 and T2 having been merged. The Westbound, left hand lane has been closed between stops R1 and R2 and stops S1 and Pulteney St to permit works to proceed on kerb adjustments at the new tram stops. The cast iron poles installed by the MTT on the Southern side of North Tce have been removed between East Tce and Frome St.

On ABC Adelaide this morning Jon Whelan who is the DPTI project general manager stated that the trams would runs as follows;-
Entertainment Centre to East End(North Terrace/East Terrace) with peak hour services every 5-8 minutes.
Glenelg to West Terrace-same frequency as now.

No mention of off peak service levels? Would that mean that any passengers from between Glenelg & Adelaide Station would have to change trams to travel past West Terrace?jibb wrote:On ABC Adelaide this morning Jon Whelan who is the DPTI project general manager stated that the trams would runs as follows;-
