TV plates

Post by stajourneyman »

Is anyone aware of the RMS plans regarding the issue of rego plates to NSW tourist vehicles beyond TV.9999.

These remaining TV plates should be exhausted in the next year or two.

Does anybody know how many TV plates are actually currently on issue?

Might I suggest they return to say TV.1000 and fill in the gaps onwards.

Perhaps reverse the alpa/numerics to 1000.TV and onwards.

Hopefully, in my opinion, they won't resort to one of those fools of an arrangement such as BS.00.AA etc !!

Even with vehicles as small as Toyota Pradas being registered on TV plates, wouldn't think there are more than a couple of thousand on issue. Imagine the RMS will just reissue the vacant 4 digit numbers again, much like it did when the m/o range reached 9999. Although much like the m/o series, I'm sure there will be many numbers that never hit the road.

Far more than 2000 Linto. It would be in the order of around 4000,with probably around another thousand general issue plates with accredited operators. The TV plates on issue now is larger than the m/o and reverse MO plates on issue, and has been for quite a few years.
At the current rate of issue TV 9999 should be reached around mid 2018.But there are gaps in the plates on issue as well.It depends on the registry plates are allocated to.

When TV plate holders sell their vehicles the majority of TV plates do not get handed back in to RMS .RMS does not reissue plates that have not been back handed in.That will be the impediment to reissuing plates,as stajourneyman suggests.
Additionally very few operators reuse their TV plates.
So it will be interesting to see what RMS do.Maybe reverse TV plates, like the Country MO's.E.g 1150 TV.As stajourneyman suggests.

TV-0000 to TV-0999 blocks have not yet been allocated as in 1985 M0-0000 to MO-0999 was issued, so is HC-0000 to HC-0999 during 2014, I believe these leading zero blocks will have to be issued before moving to the next blocks. 00000-C to 09999-C conditional plates were also issued after 99999-C in 2012.

The original TV plates in this current series were 000 to 999. IIRC, 000 to 099 were initially allocated to the "big 6" original TV licence holders, and general issue plates started around 100. Higher numbers came in after deregulation of the plates. Does the system recognise 0000 as being different from 000, et seq?

HC series HC-0230 the latter would have been issued and is almost identical to HC-230 but the system will recognise the leading zero as a different number, as it explained for the previous country MO system, when MO has both MO-230 and MO-0230

HC plates are limited, like taxi plates, and have a "price". TV plates are not.

Possibly also to do with seating capacity (more than 8 seats is a "bus"), or specialised off road tourist vehicle

Is it my imagination or are TV plates being reissued from the 000 to 999 series.

Apparently Oliveris are reregistering their charter buses from m/o plates onto TV plates.

Regis recorded so far are TV089, TV090 and TV151.

TV 089, TV 191 (but not 090) and TV 151 all appear in their disposal list from the days when they operated Relaxaway Tours http://fleetlists.busaustralia.com/nsw. ... &ltype=old
The current list also shows TV 091 and not 090. http://fleetlists.busaustralia.com/nsw.php?search=OLI

Thanks for that.

Please disregard my reference to TV.090

I was simply going off what i had incorrectly recalled from the fleet list.

On a related note, is there any word yet on what happens after TV.9999 ?

TV-0000 to TV-0999 blocks have not yet been allocated, I believe that it will go to the leading zeroes like it happened to MO-0001 to MO-0999 in 1985 after hitting MO-9999. Similarly, the NSW Conditional went back to 00001-C after 99999-C.

Surely not - what's the difference between TV 000 (with AAT Kings) and TV 0000 etc, etc. ? It's the same number to me.
Think for yourself, while it's still legal !

The computer can distinguish as it did between MO 0007 and MO 007 it would treat the numeric part as alpha and not numeric

The TV.9300s are now being issued.

Surely it won't take forever to chow through the last 600 plates?

If it is anything like the m/o series where there were some sizeable ranges of plates never issued in the 7000 - 9999 range, plugging these plus reusing numbers returned to the RMS may well see any problem deferred.

While there will always be some plates not returned, given that many vehicles on TV plates are relatively new and are reregistered for further non-psv use, likely a good proportion are returned. IIRC you need to return the plates to get a refund / credit for the unused portion of a registration, which in the case of a heavy vehicle could be considerable.

Exactly. I see the same situation happening with TV plates, as what has happened with the m/o plates in more recent times. Any TV plate recorded as returned to the RMS from TV 1xxx (say) onwards would just be remade and reissued.

My records show that very few TV plates are handed back into RMS.This will present a few issues.I suspect probably a solution like the country MO's.

Either handed back or cancelled after a certain period of time. I guess we'll see what happens sooner rather than later.

Why don't buses and coaches in NSW just have ordinary number plates like all the other vehicles.
