NSWFB Scania Bronto
Since Wednesdays storm, the NSWFB have being going around Whalan assisting people with roofs etc etc, I was quite surprised to see a Bronto out here in the west as these are usually based in the inner city and thanks for the NSWFB for helping in the community as they have being in Whalan since Wednesday and they are still in the area today, the pumpers have come across from all different areas of Sydney.

Retired (20 years old), and no government funding to replace it.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
Is it compulsory to retire them at 20?
I hope these Scanias don't have five cylinder motors too.

Equipment of this nature is required to be stripped down and inspected every 10 years.
It is an expensive process, and it is not economically viable to do it a second time.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
It would have lead a charmed life in the NSWFB wouldn't it. I have heard that the mechanics are given all the time they need to maintain them and repair to a high standard to ensure reliability.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
A couple of days after the storm there were 12 NSWFB trucks parked outside the Mount Druitt SES depot.
They came from near and far including Penrith, Kellyville, Ashfield, Castlereagh St City, Campbelltown area(?) etc.
Missed photo opportunity.

Out on the road, they get thrashed by unsympathetic drivers.Swift wrote:It would have lead a charmed life in the NSWFB wouldn't it. I have heard that the mechanics are given all the time they need to maintain them and repair to a high standard to ensure reliability.
Mechanics have to work to a budget, so they get what they pay for.
I have seen photos taken during some of these mid-life overhauls, and the condition of some components was scary.

I guess firetrucks are bound to be driven hard straight away with stone cold engines as it is the nature of their duty to get to a location asap at short notice. With the fairly recent revelation of workplace harassment and a macho culture in general within the NSWFB, it's not hard to believe that extends to the treatment of their vehicles.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
^^ There is a certain amount of money budgeted each year for "repairs to appliances" which managers are accountable for.
It is possible that a problems is more likely to be "repaired" rather than the underlying fault being "fixed" because this is cheaper. Eventually the problem re-surfaces and has the be repaired again, hopefully out of the next year's budget.
Chassis and fire fighting equipment are getting more complicated, requiring more specialist maintenance. The budgets don't necessarily increase proportionately to this demand, so cost cutting becomes the goal.
This is a generalized opinion, not a specific target.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
AFIK all the larger vehicles are owned, only the smaller vehicles are leased.
The cost of transferring equipment over to a new chassis every 2 to 3 years would be horrendous.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
I think it's time for the Fire Dept to stop buying European.
Pity they don't give RFW a go. They would cobble together something tough and basic.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
RFW have long been out of production now.
NSWFB got one RFW truck back in the 70s but it had a relatively short life. Wormald Bros used RFW chassis for a few other heavy duty trucks for other states in the 70s, not aware of how they preformed.
NSWFB's first Bronto in 1987 was built a Kenworth chassis, but it only lasted 10 years.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
Maybe the successor to International trucks, Iveco Australia as an alternative to imported trucks off the rack which have expensive complicated parts and are unnecessarily sophisticated ( so you are dependent on their service department).
Nice photo BTW.

Re: NSWFB Scania Bronto
I don't think Iveco make dual cab acco's these days, it's nice to see acco's still being used by concrete companies and garbage truck operators but not the Fire Brigades as we see Euro and now Japanese trucks.Swift wrote:Maybe the successor to International trucks, Iveco Australia as an alternative to imported trucks

Do NSW have what we down in Victoria call telebooms or aerial pumpers. Where they have the boom but no one can get up in a bucket just a nozzel?

There are about a dozen of these, called Telesqurts here, designated as Aerial Pumps. On Scania 94 or P360 6x4 chassis
