Happy New Year! As posted above, next lot of major service changes commencing 29 January.

Moderator note for posters in this thread:
  • Use this thread primarily for posting and discussing the relevant service changes taking place in 2017.
  • Please limit the service changes posted to those which are considered major (e.g route changes, timetable changes, new/deleted routes, consultations etc are ok, but minor changes such as bus stop deletion, school special changes, deviations etc are generally not discussion worthy and shouldn't be posted just for the sake of posting).
  • This thread isn't intended to just be a copy of the service changes which are already publicly viewable on the Transperth website, however major service changes are encouraged to be posted and discussed in this thread. Popular topics will be split into separate threads if necessary.
  • For any service changes posted in this thread, always include a link to the article so that other viewers can access this information and please quote the entire article and source using the quotation function on this forum as the links are often only temporarily viewable.

It'll only of been 3 weeks since the new timetables, and routes 24, 25, 27, 28 and 103 have further time changes coming from 19 February. Online timetable hasn't been updated yet, but it would seem based on the stop changes, that the 24 will travel via Adelaide Tce, Plain St and Riverside Dr to access the new terminus within the On the Point precinct at Point Fraser.

I'm a little surprised with the withdrawal of the 41 deviations. I would've thought they'd still try and push it, especially since they were proposing to introduce extra services. I believe there were concerns with buses running down the cafe strip on Eighth Ave. There are also community concerns with the proposed routing of the 406 to get to Maylands. Doesn't appear there's any rush to resolve these and implement the extension.

I believe residents in the Bentley area have been lobbying for a cross-suburb suburb service to link up to the hospital for a while now. At the moment, the highway and bus network in the area inhibits access and the only way by bus is via Cannington anyway. Even access to the local shops at Bentley Plaza is not easy from nearby suburbs unless you live along Albany Hwy. Three months trial seems a bit short and I see another east-west link being a good thing, but I can't see it gaining traction somehow. I suspect there isn't the population catchment and travel demand to support it.

We used to have the 180 (via hospital iirc) and 181 (not via hospital) 20+ years ago between Karawarra & Cannington. It didn't get that many people on it.

It wouldn't help the hospital but was thinking about whether a short route from Welshpool Station to Karawarra student housing via Brownlie Towers would work.

Or extending it to Wilson would provide a bus/train connection but the area already has direct bus access to town and it may not be far enough out enough to make the bus/train option faster.

Also Dumond St has the 170 series to East Vic Park which is only a 10 - 15 min trip. Does La Plaza have anything that you can't get in Vic Park?

The western part of Bentley however has only small local shops and for years had poor access to bigger shopping centres and even East Vic Park as the 72 did more of Berwick St than Albany Hwy.

I'm not sure whether it's necessary to post every service change that occurs. Service changes are a regular occurrence at Transperth, so it'd be a lot more useful just knowing about the more interesting/major changes rather than every minor time adjustments (such as those minor school changes you've quoted), which are highly unlikely to generate any discussion on here. Otherwise this thread will just look like a Transperth service bulletin page rather than a discussion thread. Just my personal opinion, maybe others think the contrary.

This would provide more direct access from Bentley Plaza to Curtin University.

Another option for the Fraser Point extension would have been to continue Routes 150 and 160 along Adelaide Tce to a RH turn at Plain St, LH turn at Riverside Dve then RH turn into Fraser Point. This removes the Hill St, Terrace Rd and Bennett St loop. The outward journey to Booragoon and Fremantle could follow the route in reverse and avoid the RH turn that the Route 24 has to make at PM peak to service the West End Causeway stop.

Will be interesting to see the timetables. I wonder if these frequency improvements are for the off-peak such as the 525 and 526 increasing to a 30 min off-peak frequency (currently 60 mins) or whether it is just an improvement to peak frequencies to bring the feeder routes inline with the 10 min standard (which the 525 and 527 have gradually been improved to provide this frequency for the core peak).

So routes 525, 526 and 527 are being split in half at Aubin Grove Station? That means passengers from Hammond Park or Aubin Grove will have to transfer at the new Aubin Grove Station to get to Cockburn Central or Gateway Shopping Centre?

Seems completely unnecessary to me. I understand Transperth want to ensure services are reliable and don't get stuck in traffic, but these routes are already very short. 525 and 526 are 15-20 mins long and 527 is 25-30 mins long. Splitting them up will create 6 routes that are all less than 15 mins long.

Personally, I think this is a mistake. Perth generally has a good network of feeder bus routes, but they need to do more than just connect people with railway stations. Feeder buses should join together activity centres as well, so that people can use them for local trips in addition to longer journeys to the city. Why would anyone in Hammond Park or Aubin Grove catch the bus to Cockburn Gateway after these changes are implemented? Journey times will increase significantly and it will be far more confusing for passengers. It's hard enough to convince people to use public transport in Perth as it is, adding unnecessary transfers will just make things worse. Some people may put up with the inconvenience on weekdays, but requiring transfers on weekends when services run at low frequencies is just a disaster. Even if transfers are organised so services join together, it still makes the network more complex for no valid reason.

More changes from 23 April:
Transperth website wrote: Routes 16, 19, 20, 34, 60, 66, 67, 68, 100, 101, 115, 150, 160, 352, 406, 450, 462, 464, 465, 469, 500, 501, 505, 510, 514 530, 532, 549, 554, 568 and 950 - Service Changes

Sun 23 Apr
From Sunday 23 April 2017 Routes 16, 19, 20, 34, 60, 66, 67, 68, 100, 101, 115, 150, 160, 352, 406, 450, 462, 464, 465, 469, 500, 501, 505, 510, 514 530, 532, 549, 554, 568 and 950 will undergo the following changes:
  • Routes 16, 20, 60, 66, 68, 100, 352, 406, 450, 462, 514, 532, 549 and 554 will undergo time changes
  • Routes 34, 101, 501 530, 568 and 950 will undergo time changes and operate with additional or extended services
  • Routes 19, 67, 115, 150, 160, 464, 465 and 469, 500, 505 and 510 will undergo time changes and operate with fewer services due to poor patronage.
Updated timetables will be available two weeks prior to the change.

If you require further assistance regarding service changes or planning your journey, call the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13 (TIS: 13 14 50). Hearing or speech impaired? Call via NRS 133 677 and ask for 13 62 13.
This is basically a "robbing Peter to pay Paul" exercise. Understandable given the current economic climate, slowed growth and funding. 7-8 years of funding for service expansion was a good innings though!

I wonder where these additional services will be placed? Presumably mostly to boost peak services, but I hope in the case of the 950, it'll be for improvements to off-peak/weekend and night services which are regularly busy. I guess time will tell!

If the 115 is going to a 30min frequency on weekdays as a rumour I'm hearing suggests, then I do hope someone decides to alter the timetabling of the 114 (to Munster) so as to retain 15min frequency from the City to Booragoon Bus Station.
As it stands, the two routes often leave Elizabeth Quay together, or two minutes apart - considering both share an identical routing to Booragoon, it seems a bit pointless.

Will spare the pontificating about the 115, but I know I'm not the only one who thinks "poor patronage" isn't quite accurate.

Patronage on route 67 has been lower ever since the 950 commenced. It certainly was falling when it was first introduced - not sure if it has rebounded yet. Although it still does well during the peaks. Apart from the odd spill from the 950, it can be quiet at other times. There are also some cases in the peaks where what is normally a 20 min frequency, can be as close as 4-5 mins apart. This would be to do with the removal of some deviations via the old 69 route. They obviously didn't space out the trips when they were converted to normal 67's.

Btw, the 67 hasn't deviated via Broun Ave/Drake St for a few years now. It disappeared when the 950 was introduced from what I recall. The 950 could do with the extra trips, but it'll be good to know where they'll be placed. Even at the 15 min frequency at night, especially Fri/Sat nights, the services often carry standing loads out of the city. Some off-peak trips also get quite busy, especially if there is traffic congestion and one 950 ends up picking up the pax for two 950's.

I think it is great to see Transperth starting to look more closely at how resources are allocated. There are definitely examples of routes that don't have the patronage to justify the existing number of services. Reallocating resources to higher performing routes will help to boost passenger numbers without actually increasing the cost to government - which is exactly what is required right now.

I'm also really interested to see where the extra services go - and I would definitely like to see more focus on increasing off-peak frequencies. In terms of the service itself, the frequency on most routes during peak times is more than adequate and it's pretty rare for passengers to be left behind. I think we are now at the stage where in most cases there's minimal benefit from increased service frequency during peak times without any investment in new infrastructure. If the government aren't going to commit funds for new infrastructure, then we should focus on the off-peak instead.

I have found that services really need to run more frequently later into the evening, even on weekdays. For example, when catching the bus from the CBD to Kalamunda, there's a 296 at 18:05, 283 at 18:15 and a 299 at 18:20, then nothing until 19:15. That's nearly an hour with no services to Kalamunda/Lesmurdie/High Wycombe straight after the PM peak. Lots of people don't work standard 9-5 hours or want to stay around the city after work, but our public transport system often does not allow it (without long waits for services). Another example is the 955/956 to Ellenbrook - runs hourly from 7-9pm, with the last service departing Bassendean at 9:52pm. Just means that public transport isn't a reliable option for people - because if they happen to be out later than 9:30pm in the city, they are going to have to fork out $40-50 for a taxi/uber.

Would also be nice to see late night services on Friday/Saturday nights departing the CBD at similar times to the trains. I'd love to have buses leaving at 2:15am for each of the 900 series routes - or at the very least just the 950/960. I don't think that's asking too much.

As a regular user of the 115, I can tell you the bus has a very good load at every 15 minutes. It also has reasonable loads on night services on weeknights (leaving the city). I have a grave concerns they will cut Saturday night services.....

Well cutting the 500, 505 and 510 is a good start. I have never seen more than one passenger on a 510 on a weekend, and the 505 barely scrapes a passenger, if any at all, on weekdays outside of peak. The 500 is similar.

While on the topic of the 500, it should be rerouted to go via Brentwood Shops. The dogleg East of Moolyeen Rd is fairly pointless and most passengers walk from/to the train station. Must be some old people's home or something out there I don't know about! :?:

Am also a regular user of the 115, so yes, I completely agree they're typically quite busy. Given some of the pickup locations are certainly connections from other services, its obvious that passenger transfers are probably not being recorded.
Patterns I see are pickups to Coolbelup, most passengers alight at Kardinya. All or most stops to Booragoon, most passengers alight, a number of others join. Pickups and set-downs between Booragoon and Canning Bridge, a variable amount alight at Canning Bridge.
I keep count of passengers off-peak, usually around 20-35 on any given service. Having discussed patronage with Mr. OC Benz before, I'm aware this may not necessarily be adequate given the route length.

Not surprised - they're not at all lengthy routes and are fairly direct. As for the 510, I wonder whether its arrival actually connects with other feeders further south (thus making it a usable service) or east. In any case, passengers in Kardinya, Winthrop and Somerville are better off taking a 115 or 160 rather than deviating to Murdoch and waiting up to an hour for a feeder.
