A few notes from a local - that website has shown "Transport for Canberra" for years. The new integrated bus/light rail entity to take place from July will be called "Transport Canberra" and this was announced a few months ago. PTC, I'm unaware of any new announcements or anything to do with phasing out the ACTION name - what was announced yesterday? Do you have a link?

Evening 743,
All I can gather that the necessary statutory paperwork is now in place as of this week to roll all transport in Canberra into one entity kicking off on 1/7/16 including ACTION as Transport Canberra.

Meanwhile the basic service remains 1 bus an hour in most areas and the proportion of homes within walking distance of a service every 15 min or better is very low (much less than Adelaide, another largely bus-based city).

Partly due to terrible suburb planning buses are so thinly spread that service frequencies to many areas are now are roughly 50% down on what they were 30 years back. Let's hope the redistribution of bus kilometres is done wisely.

Yeah, well a lot of that would be down to just one bit of stupidity about 30 years ago, when the NCDC Commissioners ignored the advice of pretty much everybody (including their own planning staff) and allowed a much greater proportion of town centre development to occur in Civic. Most of the direct cross-town services (eg Woden or Belconnen to Campbell Park) disappeared, and even the normal suburban feeder frequencies were gutted, in order to redirect as many express buses as possible into Civic. At the same time carparks had to be built on almost every non-dedicated bit of green space in Civic, and some streets in Reid lost bus services because the commuter parking suddenly reduced the available road width.

So, by caving in to developer pressure, those planning commissioners managed to reduce the accessibility of the entire urban area by public transport, and the main town centre by every mode of transport. Bunch of dickblisters - they should all have been thrown in jail.

Dense employment in Civic is not necessarily a bad thing if it means worse driving conditions. In almost every city the mode share for public transport is much higher for jobs in the CBD than in suburban centres. Eg Sydney CBD vs Parramatta.

The other three things I'd add are:

1. Abandonment of town centres (for new developments) in favour of basically exurban shopping and jobs (eg Fyshwick/airport area) with no or poor transport services.

2. Cul de sac and loop street layouts. To get a bus within 500m of every home requires maybe double the number of routes as a better planned (= older) city eg large parts of Melbourne or Adelaide. Geelong has maybe 50% Canberra's population but has far less than half its number of bus routes. A large proportion of its routes run every 20 minutes offpeak weekdays since a recent network restructure. Whereas only a handful of Canberra's population has this level of frequency on its buses. If you can cover the population with fewer routes you can run higher frequency on each one.

3. Developing Tuggeranong before Molongolo. This has given Canberra a huge length for its population. Linear cities are potentially good for public transport but the relativities between public transport and driving become more favourable to the latter with distance from the CBD. Running a direct bus from each Tuggeranong suburb to the CBD is inefficient but not doing so has transfer penalties, especially if going via the Tuggeranong town centre which is off-centre from most development.

A very tasteful livery with colours that are also serviceable and robust compared to some others.Being a Bustech product, will not meet with the approval of a certain ATDB member residing on the south coast of NSW LOL

Is Transport Canberra going to be the equivalent of TfNSW, with ACTION actually still operating the buses, like STA?

It is interesting what it states - the new branding will not start until 2019.
Canberra goes Blue. Good bye ACTION's green and white buses.

The ACT Government today announced the new Transport Canberra branding for buses to coincide with the all over Red trams that will begin operation in 2019.

The first bus 622, is also the first ever Scania Bustech vehicle to enter service for ACTION. It is the first of an order for 20 and will commence operating in early January 2017.

It was our honour for TransitGraphics to help shape the future look of Canberra's bus fleet with the design process and vehicle application of the brand for Transport Canberra.

The TC livery will be quite similar to the Auckland Transport Livery - just a slightly different shade of blue. Compare the above photos with the below to see my point http://busaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=83215

Poorly worded.

The new livery will commence on buses from 2017.

The Light Rail commences operation in 2019.

Yes I agree but the new livery still carries the name ACTION so I interpret it as though that will not change to Canberra Transport until 2019.

The TG photos of 622 show both names.

Similar to TfNSW and operator brandings in Sydney.

Perhaps the Action part will disappear later?

My best guess is although there's probably not a corporate separation between the planning and operational sides of Transport Canberra (like there is between TfNSW and the STA), they're likely to still keep ACTION as the bus brand into the future if only to give some semblance of "separation" - even if it is relegated to the top of the door much like the operator name is in Sydney. [Of course it'd also fit in nicely if ever CDC has to standardise their QCity buses from Queanbeyan to the TfNSW metro mandate, but that's unlikely to happen.]

Given they want to make Transport Canberra the overarching brand like the Hop and consist of both public and private brands underneath, it probably makes sense to still have the buses "operated by ACTION" (as opposed to the light rail "operated by Canberra Metro"), even if ACTION itself doesn't exist in its own right.
