Oh my lord was today busy, midday train from Canberra to Sydney was sold out, so were 4 buses at 7pm from Murrays. On Monday, midday train back to Canberra is sold out, most seats on the other two are sold out, don't know about buses, but they seem to be getting really full as well. Canberra Day long weekend has never been so busy...

Murrays have an hourly service all day, you had more choice than just the 7 pm service.
As you have noticed for the 7 pm service, they run mulitple divisions if the loadings warrant.

I must of been lucky to get a seat on that Monday midday service & to think I booked last Sunday.
Luckily I'm on the Sunday morning Sydney service, so I was able to get a first class seat.

Another thing to remember is that schools may use the XPT for excursions. I say that as on a Monday return from Melbourne for me last year. I caught the train from Melbourne to Bairnsdale, now this train was full this particular day as a huge group of school students were making their way to Bairnsdale.
