Couldn't they rejig all the timetables to ensure that each area has some sort of bus service on Sundays?

Probably much needed if Sunday trading gets the go ahead.

I'm no PTA planner, but I'd say it probably all depends on funding. If the bus network expansion continues as planned despite the GST issues, or at least continues but is slightly scaled back, then there is a good chance of improved Sunday bus services - after all, there have been a variety of improvements so far and there's more to come (i.e. Byford upgrades).

Otherwise the best they'd be able to do is rob Peter to pay Paul (such as what they did in 2009-10 with the after-hours cuts, Joondalup rationalisation and other bus reductions to pay for the 885/8, 30 extension and 104/5/6/11 upgrades etc.) Most likely it would ultimately depend on what combination of services enables as much patronage as possible while still covering as much area as possible (though again, I'm no PTA planner)

That said, there's still some fat to be trimmed and reinvested.

They should axe the 205 and make selected 508/509 services deviate along the 205 route.

Don't see it happening any time soon as it was created as an election promise - at least not whilst this government is in power.[/color]

Is it a legal requirement for buses to operate with headlights on all of the time and since when has that been the case? I only heard this for the first time today from a workmate.

There is no such legal requirement. Soon after the first grey/greens hit the streets, there was a request from the PTA that we drive with our lights on as the horrid livery made it more difficult for vision impaired people to distinguish when a Transperth bus was approaching. I resisted following this policy, but have found that the level of competence of other road users is so low of late than anything, anything! that just might make them notice that there's a bus approaching...... If the PTA acknowledge that the new livery is not that visible, then why did they approve the new livery (assuming they were around at the time)?

It's policy at some companies that headlights are on at all times, others it isn't.

Wonder if anyone would ever be smart enough to make a Transperth Bus Game... something similar to Rail Simulator and Bus Simulator (On Computer/Laptop)... Now that would be fun

I have always had my headlights on which I learnt from my CAT driving days. What it does is to raise your profile as I have found that you are less likely to have a car door flung out on you with your headlights on rather that off.

i.e. I do it for safety not for passenger convenience.

What's the maximum speed of each of the current buses in the fleet?

The maximum speed on the Kwinana Freeway between Safety Bay Road and Pinjarra Road is 110km/h. If the buses can't reach 90km/h, then they would not be allowed on that section of freeway. Remember that a freeway has a minimum speed limit that is 20km/h below the posted maximum speed.

Throwing it out there, why do some routes have odd times e.g a 245 leaves at 4:20pm and then the next leaves at 5:10pm. WTF?
Is there any others like it?

Cheers!

Most modern buses are governed to about 97km/h. However it does vary. Older buses seem to sit on about 85ish...

And plenty of reasons why buses leave at odd times. While it may seem odd, operational reasons, resources, connecting services, demand and co-ordinated services all play a role.

Current examples include the 334 on Saturdays going to Ellenbrook shops departing every hour from 7:27 to 11:27, then at 1:12 and every hour to 5:12. (OT: Why does the Eastern 101 still use "To Bassendean / Morley timetable" for the feeders?) Also the 468 on Saturdays is about as random as you can get, the 241 seems to have a morning peak on Saturday, and don't get me started on the mess that is the current lot of Byford services (the 254 changes can't come soon enough...)

Some oddities that were recently killed include the 27X, 401, 85/95 on Sundays (which was stuck in the core times era - two buses within minutes of each other then nothing for ages), the random gaps on the 414 - and others - on Sundays, the 15 every 35 minutes Saturdays, the 60 on Sundays and the pre-340s Morley network (perhaps the ultimate example of which was the 50, which had departures of 8:47, 10:02, 10:30, 1:00, 1:47, 4:00, 4:52, 6:50 and 8:05, at least as of November 2006. Yes, that's anywhere between 28 minutes and 150 minutes (aka call a taxi) for waiting...

Again though, I don't work in planning, so can't say for certain why these blips happen. What Mr OC Benz says makes sense though.

Out of interest, what day is that 245 on? Do you mean the 4:25 from Armadale on weekdays?
