I agree there will be only limited changes if any, but I would expect the number of Volvos may increase, given they are now in much larger numbers compared to that time last year... And it was a specific question regarding the low number of Volvos in the original documentation to which I was replying.

Sounds like it will be quite a while before we start seeing more low floors (and less PR100.2s) on the 75 then :)

You might also find that if the currently proposed buses are in fact the ones transferred then the depot will start receiving some new buses after the changeover has taken place so as to reduce the number of high floors (about 1/3 of those currently listed to move).

Don't forget that, in this context, "Kalamunda" means "Kalamunda and Welshpool depots"

Mind you, still a bit squeezy...

According to the fleet lists, Kalamunda currently has 40 buses and Welshpool has 83 buses. With the contract change-over, an extra 48 buses will need to be squeezed into the depots.

Some of the buses listed come from depots that aren't affected by the contract changes, so there'll be other movements as well as the expected Swan-PATH transition.

I noticed in an earlier post that routes 100, 101, 170, 176, 177 & 179 were not listed amongst the affected routes but I presume that Path will take all of those come October as well.

Logically you've have to say Kalamunda as Welshpool is going to have 1363-1434.

I think the diesel OC's have to be at Kalamunda my money is they'll get the dozen or so NH's also as WP will already have a large fleet of low floors.

More to the point where is 1462 gonna be based??

I suspect there may be some movements amongst PATH after the take-over. There are suddenly a whole heap of extra buses, probably largely due to the fact that there were school runs in the contract area that were probably operated out of a depot outside the area.

I agree with perthbus that those Diesel OC's will probably stay there, after all if they snatch them, there won't be anything newish to substitute them there. And that'll get people complaining! But I'm sure there are a few certain members on here that will know where I'd like them to be based. ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if 1462 is at Kalamunda initially.

I have many other possibilities in my mind of what could happen, but best not speculate further.

Thanks busrider. Maybe Herbert should add another option to the WA fleet lists to give a Transperth listing in age order as well as in fleet number order. I've never got used to the blocking up of fleet numbers that occurred since privatisation, especially now I'm in Bunbury more than I'm in Perth.

Looks like Transit Systems Australia are slowly falling apart. First Adelaide 2 Contracts lost in October 2011, Then The Manly Ferry Contact Awarded to Transfield and now a Perth Contract.
Things don't look to good for the future at TSA.

Plenty of bigger contracts then Kalamunda coming up for renewal in the near future.

In Perth at least, its more one rather than plenty of large contracts coming up in the very near future.

And to maintain pedantry for those who might be interested, it was not the "Manly ferry contract" that was not won by TSA, but Sydney Ferries (all of the ferry services operated by Sydney Ferries, including Manly and other routes), and the winner was a joint venture between Transfield and Veolia Transdev.

In many ways, the Kalamunda contract result was interesting, in that it has perpetuated the cycle of Transperth contracts being won by only incumbents or other existing Transperth operators. To be honest, the PTA has struggled to generate much interest over the years from other potential bidders, one of the reasons being that there is a strong perception - rightly or wrongly - that the market is quite closed and difficult to enter for various reasons. Add to that Perth's geographic isolation, and it becomes an unattractive prospect for potential new entrants (particularly those based interstate or beyond) to spend time and money bidding.

Having said all that, the existing three operators have no doubt done a pretty good job of driving down margins and the PTA's costs themselves with the more competitive environment of the last couple of years.

What makes the Kalamunda result particularly interesting, is that it raises the possibility of more competitive tension come the Morley and Midland contracts going out to tender, compared to if there had been no change in operator. If both Swan and Veolia had retained Kalamunda and Fremantle, neither would have been eligible to bid for Morley, unless the PTA relaxed its 50% rule. Without renewed interest from new bidders, this may have restricted competition for Morley, potentially allowing Path to retain the contract with less aggressive pricing (= bad result for the PTA). However, with Swan having lost Kalamunda, they are now OK to bid for Morley (although depending on the various contract area sizes at that time, they possibly may not be able to retain Midland AND win Morley without tipping over the 50% limit).

Meanwhile for Path, I would suspect that the economies of scale in having Kalamunda will be of benefit to them in defending Morley compared to a situation where Morley was their one and only Perth based contract... potentially leading to better pricing from the PTA's perspective also.

Its a tangled web.... :)

Do we know if any of the rumors of existing WA-based private operators being interested in PTA contracts are going anywhere or if they have decided its too hard and given up?

They are in the Canning contract area and not affected by the change of operator.

As it requires AdBlue I'd say Kalamunda initially but it could also go to Morley as they already have Volvo's there and would guess they have AdBlue filling facilities there.

Does anyone know if Bayswater has AdBlue filling facilities? If so, Kalamunda's only Volvo (
1462) or some of the 500LE's could well find a home there as well. With all the various buses from various contract areas spread across so many different depot not within their designated contract areas, it's going to be interesting times for bus spotters :)

I'd say you're on the money with 1462. Bayswater at present doesn't have any AdBlue required vehicles, but once 662 does get replaced, they may end up with a Volvo.

Manly Ferry?? I think you are referring to the Manly FAST Ferry which is a different thing alltogether- and even though they lost the contract for that, they are still operating it in opposition to the new contract holder Sydney fast Ferries and have expanded services earlier this year.
And I did not think Sydney Fast Ferries was part of Transfield.

Transfield did in fact get the Sydney Ferries operation in conjunction with Veolia Transdev, including the Manly Ferry but NOT from Transit Systems Australia.

Given Transit Systems were one of the three bidders for Sydney Ferries, it's fair to say they lost that tender, even if they weren't the incumbent operator.

The original post certainly implied that they were the incumbent operator. Or at least he got the Manly Ferry and Manly Fast Ferries mixed up.
