1997 Mercedes Vario 814d air suspension and conversion

Post by Mercedes vario »

Hi all

I am looking for advice and information on the following :

Specifications or workshop manual for my bus.
The front air suspension bags need replacing.
Places that will provide a kit for the internal fitting out.
Advice on where to buy tyres.

Thank you for your time. Apologies for asking obvious questions but I'm starting out on my own.

You don't state your location so it is hard to give specific information.

For 1,2, and 3 Google would be your best start.
For 4, perhaps a store that sells tyres in your area.

Hi,

I've tried looking on Google, which is why I was asking the question.

I'm in Canberra.

I was wondering if I could replace the suspension bags at home, or if I need to get them done in a workshop. I've included a photo of the one that needs replacing. As I've never done it before, I'm assuming that I will need to replace both sides.

Appreciate any advice or assistance you can offer.

I'm in Canberra. I've included a picture of the air 'bag' that needs replacing. Apologies for not using the correct terminology. I'm still on my L plates with buses.

I would be very surprised if the truck/van version had air bags, it's even a surprise on buses. Perhaps this was an aftermarket modification or STA request.

I don't know what the poster's qualifications are, but I feel people who ask questions like these and don't know the answers should trust the work to others. It can be dangerous doing such work, and dangerous if it is not done right.

Thanks for your advice. I have experience with cars but not with buses. I like to know what it is that I need replacing. Otherwise when I've been to mechanics in the past and said , my car is doing this can you fix it, some have taken advantage of my lack of knowledge and think that because of my gender they can take advantage of my lack. I'd much rather be able to ring mechanics, tell them what needs fixing and get a quote.

It's difficult took find a mechanic who will not give me the runaround, or have try and take advantage. I've learnt about cars, now I seek to learn about my bus.

Perhaps contact a company like this (Google for others)

https://airsprings.com.au/heavy-automotive-bus/

and ask if they have an agent in your area who can supply and fit

Thanks for your advice. I will look into these options over the next few days. I also need to find the technical information on putting a high flow filler hose between the diesel tank and the door. The last time I filled it up with my jerry can the diesel went down my arms and that was with two people. I've been trying

As an afterthought:
Probably important to consider that these airbags were not part of the original spec for the vehicle, and that it can run quite well on its original springs.

A set up like that would probably only improve the ride characteristics marginally at best, so you should consider whether it is worth the cost of getting them replaced.
