fuel injection pumps for leyland 680 engine

Postby bustinloose » Sat Apr 20, 2013 12:57 am

We have a 1980 leyland leopard (ex .SA transport) converted to a motor home. The max speed is governed by the Lucas cav rotory fuel pump due to the maximum amount of fuel delivery. We would like to fit the Lucas inline pump for more rpm . Any ideas?.
I have a digital copy of the manual (excluding the engine and gearbox)should anybody require it. I in turn need the manual for the engine and gearbox.

I would think carefully before upping the rpm on a 680 as they may self destruct.
A gearing change (diff/gearbox) may be a better option.
Better still fit a TL11 engine.

May I ask what makes you think the inline pump is better?

The rotary or more technically known as a DPA pump can do the same thing and is probably easier to adjust, though as others have intimated the old 680 doesn't like 9000 rpm.
To change over to the inline requires mounting brackets injector lines and a lot of ancillary stuff which may be hard to acquire now.

What road speed are you trying to achieve from what you get now?

Thanks for the info. I will stick with the original pump. I have acquired a zf transmission and have access to the diff from a panther which looks like it can take two speed. At present at 2200rpm we achieve the blistering speed of 80km per hour and 3 km per litre. Guess we have time to smell the roses!!
Is there a database of engine numbers for the 680 With the various mods.

Rotary pump is the way to stay, just aim at a diff ratio change if you want higher cruise speed. Don't push her past the 2200 or you will have plenty of "stop" time for those roses.

I agree with Diamond T leave the pump as is and change diff ratio & possibly change rear tyre size to up rear end speed as well.
