Bus Driver Pay

Postby PLI » Tue Jul 03, 2012 5:25 pm

No need to be nosy but I was wondering how much a bus driver would be earning, from the first day of work, to 20 years of experience?

This is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question.

Alot depends on which state you are in, whether you mean route service or charter driver, full time, part time or casual.

As a general rule, a bus driver will get paid the same rate whether he has been in the job 6 months or 20 years. Some companies have a "service grant" which is measured on years of service, but this only makes up $15-30 of your total pay packet each week anyway.

As a general rule, in Melbourne, a full time route service driver would take home approximately $800-1100 a week for a 40 hour week. It varies from week to week as some weeks you will work a straight Monday to Friday roster, other weeks your roster will include weekend days, which are paid at the applicable penalty rates.

The "standard" minimum rate under a TWU award appears to be about $17.20/hr

Ventura seniority roster drivers are on a little under $24 an hour full time. You're almost always guaranteed a 6th day (time and a half for 3 hours then double after that on a saturday and double time on sundays) so from there, you do the math :)

Yes , if you take any fares or check school bus passes you get it , don't think you get it if you get called in for only a charter. Most casual drivers do charters between morning and afternoon school runs so they get it.

I just follow my roster @ $23.60/hour approx plus normal penalties and do little overtime{Avoid it as much as possible} plus my service grant I earned $60k's for last year. Please note I took no leave during this time. My hours on the roster are between 38 to 45 hours per week, shifts vary trom 4.5 to 11.5 hours and my employer's policy is you will have a day off in every pay period {weekly}. My service grant now is $22 plus per week so that adds up over the year. Plus accrued time adds up to another 13 days off a year. When rostered for work on Sundays you recieve extra days off dependit on how many Sundays. The best thing I like is my free Myki card that covers all PTV including V/Line and yes I have used it. A lot of Metro travel., Have been to Mildura, Cobram, Swan Hill, Albury and numerous trips to and from Euroa. Have also done Geelong, Balleratt etc where no booking required and most times have booked first class at no charge. If you can put up with days off any day of the week and hours such as mine 5.30 hrs to 22.00 hrs. Suits me and my partner as herself and me have a very independent lifestyle we don't have to do everything together. Makes it hard if you have kids in your relationship as the world is geared for a 9-5 lifestyle. So if you want to be full time driver in Victoria it is not perfect.
