Wasn't The Southern Spirit similar to this proposal?
Next station is Victoria Square. Change here for all trains.

The Southern Spirit was a luxury rail cruise train operated by Great Southern Rail in Australia.[1] The train was launched in June 2008 and was planned to travel all over Australia, with the first service originally planned to have run in November 2008. The train was planned to operate from November to February each year, and combine train travel with overnight hotel stays, and other experiences similar to land excursions during sea cruises.[2]

The inaugural journey departed on 9 January 2010 travelling from Uluru to Brisbane over 13 nights. The itinerary included Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, Kangaroo Island, Philip Island and the Hunter Valley.

Wonder if they'll keep the same colour scheme. Photo taken at Belair, 23rd Feb 2011.

From one of the linked web pages above:

"The livery of the diesel engine that will leave Adelaide on December 6, 2019, pulling the first "Great Southern" train (with up to 218 passengers), might seem hi-vis yellow.

But it's actually a "sunset-inspired burnt orange, reflective of summer and Australian beaches," says Chris Tallent, chief executive of Journey Beyond (an Australian-owned group which encompasses Cruise Whitsundays and the Rottnest Express as well as Great Southern Rail)."

So Great Southern Rail ceases operation of the Adelaide to Melbourne Overland due to the South Australian government cutting their funding for the service then GSR introduce this Adelaide to Brisbane Great Southern service

They can't make money from fares out of the Overland, but obviously think (hope?) they can out of the GS, same as they do with the IP and Ghan.

Well they could if they had half a brain. The Overland is a pretty poor way of getting between Adl and Mel during the day. What they should consider is running it as an overnight sleeper service so everyone arrives nice and fresh in the morning instead of having to get up a crap-o'clock to catch an early flight. This has fallen on deaf ears before though.

The Overland used to be a 7-day overnight sleeper service but it failed years ago. It was determined that a daylight service where passengers could enjoy the scenery might be be a better option. The frequency has been cut back a couple of times IIRC. Perhaps buses are providing a better experience?

It was better as an overnight train, me and my family travelled on The Overland in 1997/1998 the seats were nice to sleep and it was good having a dining car I recall having a nice hot Milo in the morning.

I have travelled a handful of times on Firefly coach, I hated it, the seats are horrible, the Tintinara Roadhouse was expensive for drinks and snacks.

You like overnight trains, I like overnight trains, but it seems the majority of travellers don't. That is why they stopped running them.

Sad as it is, that is the commercial reality.

The Overland timetable finishes up on 30 December so it looks as though its end is in sight. https://www.greatsouthernrail.com.au/fa ... -2018-2019

An article only three days old https://www.borderchronicle.com.au/stor ... nding-cut/ still throws doubts on its future with the last train expected to depart on 31 December if funding does not come through - which is a day later than the finishing date in the timetable.

Journey Beyond website is not accepting Overland bookings post 31 December, so maybe this is the end. On a more positive note, the Great Southern commences this week, ARTC timings here.
