[Mar/Apr 2018] SA Transport observations

Postby The Phonj » Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:32 pm

Welcome to Autumn; "Mad March" is in full swing, with the Adelaide 500 already upon us and the Festival of Arts and Fringe both in full swing. Daylight Saving finishes at the beginning of April; don't forget to wind your clocks back by an hour on the appointed day.

The State election will be held on March 17. Labor are promising to extend the tramlines to Norwood and North Adelaide, and remove a number of level crossings. Liberal have promised to install a park n ride at Paradise Bus Interchange. SA-Best (Xenophon) have no policies pertaining to public transport on their website. Choose wisely; the government will remain for a four year term.

The last diesel SL202 (445 with Light-City Buses) is due to be retired at the end of this month. This is pretty much your last chance to get final rides and photos before it is retired. The retirement of SL202 (CNG) units has already begun with a number already having gone off the road (1604, 1617, 1622, 849, 865, 875, 883, 896) and further retirements are now imminent.

Football returns to Adelaide Oval soon; with "AO" services running - keep an eye on the Adelaide Metro website for the timetable which shouldn't be too far away.

"Ed Sheeran" has a concert at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 7 March. With many expected to attend and a full 'AO' service compliment it will be good to see how the network copes with the changes to King William St for the tram extension. I don't believe that previous events at Adelaide Oval over the summer have garnered quite the same crowds that are regularly attending football matches

Please... Post your South Australian transport observations that wouldn't seem to warrant their own thread here.

Not transport related but I noticed today the vacant lot in O'Connell St that had had steel fencing around it for the last untold years has now been opened out and looks like it's been turned into an open grassed area. Looks quite good. Also there seems to be a Volvo of some description hiding behind Auto Masters in South Rd. Anyone know which one and why it's there?

Other March/April transport pieces of note include-

1) North Tce tram extension opening and new tram timetable
2) New Metrocard fare regieme from April 3
3) The long promised extra frequency evening train services from early April (presume some feeder bus timetables may change then too?)

I guess you're talking about the former LeCornu site. This was bought by the Adelaide City Council recently. I think that Volvo would be the mobile breast cancer screening bus. Ex-1278.

I think April may be a little optimistic for the opening of the tram line extensions; but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. While some parts look to be largely finished; there are some other areas which look far from completion.

612 did some trips last night 235, 273, 235, 273, and the last 506 for the night
It’s great to see that being used on other routes and at night rather than being on 361’s most the time.

Not really an S.A. observation, but the crowds I observed on Friday & Saturday at Perth Stadium should mean it'll be a big event for Adelaide, too.

Sign in O'Connell St today suggests a future Labor govt would extend the tram line into North Adelaide.

Saw 208 tram this evening on King William St, heading towards Glenelg/Glengowrie. "Not in service" on destination and also written on paper notices stuck to the doors. Presumably on a test run. I guess that 207 and 209 will be not that far off.

Already mentioned in the first post. Free travel on trams will be extended to North Adelaide if the extension is completed.

1601 isn't showing on Fleetlists. Does anyone know, has it now been withdrawn?

The fleet lists have a seperate withdrawn section that you can look at, but yes, 1601 has been withdrawn.

Is MAN NL232 CNG 1778 still off the road? I don't think I've seen it for over 6 months. How long does it take nowadays to get a replacement transmission for these buses?

That is awful news. It means more of these dreadfully built V2 CB80s on the streets when I thought we were finally relieved of new deliveries of these for good.

I’m getting tired of seeing them, hearing them, I’m not a huge fan of the ZF Ecolife gearbox anyway
Voith DIWA in a Volvo B7RLE is more entertaining.

More tram problems with trams not running between Beckman Street Glandore and Glenelg due to a "technical issue"(lets hope its not a Pantograph incident).
Bad time for it to happen with most of the fleet out to cater for Football crowds,no doubt not any easy time to find replacement buses.
Several trams with passengers stranded, waiting for replacement buses.

What is this nonsense?

From AdelaideMetro.com:
Substitute buses will be provided, operating as close to the existing train timetables as practicable.

I have no doubts that the timetable will be designed for weekday peak services, with no alterations whatsoever to services outside of these times! It's been the case with every recent rail closure.

I can see a lot of money wasted on fuel with vehicles idling for 15 minutes or longer on some runs.

There would have been buses available but no drivers available. Given it was during the "peak" inbound services to Adelaide Oval, a heap of drivers would have signed on not long earlier and there wouldn't be any knocking off until after the "peak" trips to Adelaide Oval had finished, by which time services had resumed.
$2,500 fines for vehicles illegally using red Bus Only lanes - could cut the state's debt real quickly if they extended that to regular Bus Lanes!

I notice that 1 row of "out of service" Midis-8 buses at Morphettville Depot has disappeared. Wondering if they have gone to Southlink/Torrens Transit to cover Rail Replacement services over Easter?

An amount of the road surface has been removed just beyond the East Tce end of the tram line extension. This has itself revealed a number of sleepers which has been buried underneath the surface, dating back to the the original tram system in Adelaide.
