Why so many MANS!?

Postby Madbus » Sat Aug 12, 2017 10:36 am

Hello all, I live on patapinda road were routes 747 and 745 do there loops, and almost every time I see a bus come past its always a MAN HOCL NL. Does anybody know why they always run the same type of bus all the time?

I may be wrong but I think it’s just a rostering thing.

Low patronage route so doesn't generally need a full size bus.

Nothing wrong with MANs being out after hours. It's relieving to see the odd MAN vehicle out on a regular weekend shift (usually a Camden Park or Morphettville NL232, or the odd Newton diesel NL202). I hate it when there's there's 4-6 CB80s in King William St all at once which you can often see from a kilometre away, with not a single CB60 vehicle (or older) in sight.

Lonsdale also has 43 18.280s, some of which are used on weekends. At times, an Edinburgh North NL202 get sent out on a weekend due to a couple of drivers there that prefer them.

I find that mostly Scania buses run the weekend on routes 747 and 745.

yes, on lightly used routes like 747/745 they bring in such long bendy buses with only about five people in them. So really, they only need buses with no more capacity then a Mitsubishi fuso rosa. In fact, they should run those little Mitsubishi Rosa's down the 747/745 way anyway.

The Rosas are pretty useless really. Only routes suitable for them are 683, 682 and weekend 681's. Anything else and you could end up with problems with old people boarding with walkers or shopping trolleys.

Oh, I wouldn't say there that useless  . Is it true that old people have boarding problems with a rosa and not with a full-size bus?

Rosas have steps.
Time to get bus priority and tram priority through the city and suburbs.
Time to police bus lanes which are used by arrogant car drivers.
Time to work for better timetables and better connections.

So it’s pretty similar to an older person boarding an SL202, maybe? I haven’t ridden in a Rosa before.

What? So SL202s have steps too? Aren't all the SL202s either scrapped or used for rail substitute anyway?

SL202 buses are not used for rail subs. Some diesels and CNG's have been scrapped, but there are still plenty in service. Check out Fleet Lists for the facts.

Scrapping has commenced already? As far as I'm aware, 865 and 849 are still gathering dust at Mile End. Not sure about 1622 and 896 though. So is that the current 'solution' to the Morphettville storage yard having next to no space left? Would they have any resale value?

I don't think there will be much demand for the MAN SL202 CNG's when they are retired.
I notice Torrens Transit now own 1604.

The only real demand for the CNG SL202's will be from existing bus or transport operators looking for a cheap source of spare transmissions or other parts. 883, 1622 and 896 were well and truly stripped of parts before being scrapped.
