O-Bahn upgrades

Adelaide / South Australia Transport Discussion

Re: O-Bahn upgrades

DPTI has opened tenders for new O-Bahn Bus Stops signs/poles/plates for all 752 stops in the Outer North-East area. The new stop plates will show the stop as an O-Bahn stop, as well as clearly showing stop number, bus stop code. Red will still be used to identify Go-Zones. Where existing post and poles are used they will repainted.
The work once tenders are let will have until June 30th 2018 to be completed.
It would be good if once this is done for the rest of the Adelaide Metro area was to be done. Many signs, posts, etc. are looking very dilapidated, with yellow and red posts very faded.

I know I've mentioned this before, but what was wrong with having the routes listed on the signs at the interchanges such as TTP and Paradise?

These should be listed, in addition to the computer screen. Also, city services should have scheduled connections at night with the 502, 506 etc instead of just a listed departure time with no connecting service listed.

There's been mentions on here that one needs to catch the M44 at night to make a 506, when technically the C1/2 arrives just before or at the scheduled departure for the feeders. Even when I've asked the driver to radio the feeder, it still didn't wait for some reason.

Why doesn't the DPTI invest some money into fixing the existing system, before they go cold turkey with an expensive 'upgrade'?

Interesting that with all the new Bus Stop signs that will appear over the next 12 months on Outer North East O-Bahn routes, there has been no provision for them to be included for the Southern side of the City on the M44 route to Marion Centre?

Most people from the southern section of the M44 don't go past the city, so I don't see the point calling its stops O-Bahn stops.

Because every time something changes the whole sign needs to be updated. There are better ways of doing things now.

Further news on the Adelaide Metro website re proposed changes to Currie and Grenfell Street Bus stops from late 2017 to coincide with the opening of the O-Bahn tunnel.
There are signs at all bus stops in these 2 streets advising of changes coming.

So what's the DPTI's solution to accounting for extra patronage when many outbound C1s and M44s between 1:30 and 7:30 PM are already full standing loads on artics?

This page is now showing a list of all Bus Stop closures in Currie and Grenfell Streets commencing last Sunday at the eastern end of Grenfell Street carrying through the rest of Grenfell and Currie Streets to West Terrace. This work will take till the end of November.
Most of the work will be done after 730 at night,as part of the project to change some stops as well as placing Digital Stops in place in readiness for the new O-Bahn services.

I have heard that the buses with validators at every door will only be used on o bahn express routes.

After reading on the Adelaide Metro website about these improvements I can say that there is some faults with these.

1. Drivers can't see anyone in the centre or rear door who have paid or not paid for their ticket.
2. How would it be possible for anyone to get off the bus if everyone is getting on from each door.

Hop on the Glenelg tram and both your questions will be answered. It will be just the same as the tram.

This animated GIF from Boston will give an idea of the difference all-door boarding will make. Boston is introducing it system-wide by 2020.

26 seconds vs 79 seconds for 35 people.

Installation of dedicated "Bus Only" lane markings

As part of the 160 million O-Bahn City Access Project-dedicated "Bus Only" lane markings will be installed along the O-Bahn alignment in early December 2017.
These lanes will be implemented between the end of the Busway at Gilberton and the the cross-city priority bus lanes on Grenfell Street.
Lane markings will help to reinforce the intended use of bus lanes along Hackney Road as part of the O-Bahn project.
Dedicated "Bus Only" lanes feature a red painted outline and a Red and White "Bus Only" message.
The bus lanes will become operational on completion of the markings.
Motorists are advised that a maximum penalty of $2500 applies for driving in a red "Bus Only" lane

No driver training this week, just some more testing. Apparently driver training will begin next week.

Thanks Eagle Eye-if training begins next week I would imagine it will take at least 2 weeks of training, meaning opening date might be Sunday 17th December.
Will we see new timetables for the opening?
With new and changed bus stops in Currie and Grenfell Street affecting O-Bahn, Hills and East-West services I would imagine they would have to reprint all those timetables.
Maybe details/timetables will be released next week?

You'd think there would be new timetables because travel times will be quicker. Or maybe just less late running on the current timetables. Maybe just online updates for the changed city stops? Who knows?
