[May/June 2017] SA Transport observations

Adelaide / South Australia Transport Discussion

I find it most interesting that Rebekha Sharkie MP is being involved; while Victor Harbor and Goolwa may be in her electorate; typically public transport matters are a state; not federal responsibility. Regardless; any increase in service is a good thing, not a bad thing; even if transfers at Noarlunga centre are required.

I wonder if an Adelaide extension will be ultimately forthcoming as recently happened with the Murray Bridge service.

I thought discussion had occured a few years ago with Link SA flirting with the idea of terminating barossa services at Gawler with transfer to GC line train to/from Adelaide.

I long suspected that in similar fashion YP Coaches might one day terminate services from Yorke Peninsula and Mid North at Mawson Lakes or Salisbury allowing a 25minute service to the city on the GC train. Maybe the future electrification might expedite some extended express services which could sync with coach transfers saving time in peak hour gridlock....

I sensed the drawbacks were a need to manage the freight for each route and the idea that Adelaide Railway Station isn't as close to the centre of the cbd as the central bus station is... meaning a tram or bus transfer again once in the city.

Guess its a wait and see or keep checking the crystal ball every few months.

While one can think that country coach services are geared towards passenger operations; one potentially lucrative income source for coach operators is freight. Terminating at the Central Bus Station provides a freight terminal for this income source which would not be available by terminating outside the City Centre. YP Coaches use the CoachFreight service of Premier Stateliner in the Central Bus Station to handle their freight traffic, and any revenue is good revenue. I suspect that LinkSA aren't interested in freight traffic so happily terminate their country runs at the Metro border. Remember that their recently extended service from Murray Bridge to Adelaide doesn't terminate at the Central Bus Station.

Would any proposals to bus services to Goolwa require approval from the Transport Minister? He hasn't had a good track record of introducing changes to Adelaide Metro bus/train/tram timetables recently.
Time to get bus priority and tram priority through the city and suburbs.
Time to police bus lanes which are used by arrogant car drivers.
Time to work for better timetables and better connections.

That may depend on the level of subsidy provided by the Government. Besides the concession reimbursement, private, licensed bus services have traditionally needed to cover their costs from the farebox.

New rear end,new engine-all the bodywork done by Custom Coaches at Wingfield. Almost looks like a brand new bus.

1140 has also been fitted with metrocard readers at middle and rear doors in readiness for all door boarding.

It amazes me, given the population and tourists to the Fleurieu area that there are not regular scheduled local public transport services between Encounter Bay and Goolwa servicing Victor Harbor, Hayborough, Middleton, Port Elliot, Goolwa, Goolwa Beach and Hindmarsh Island on both weekdays and weekends. This could include a coastal clipper beach type service for weekends and holiday periods and frequent commuter services on the main Goolwa-Port Elliot-Victor Harbor run linking the new residential areas with the South Coast towns.

Ah the beginning of the "New Era" for at least the O-Bahn services initially :)

It hasn't yet, it will be officially announced by the Treasurer in tomorrows Budget. Wouldn't expect it to happen until January 2018 timetable changes.

I know any bus from LCB can do a 300. Unusual to see 542 doing the 3 hour lap.

Just spotted at Arndale leaving on its clockwise trip.

There are quite a few LCB St Agnes Rigids and Artics that do round trips on the 300's during weekdays.

I was on one this morning going anticlockwise.

Just unusual to see 542. As it would 443.

I wouldn't be surprised if 443 has done it's last run. It's been off the road for months now, after being out of service for a while last year.

Is or was there an ex Darwin NL202 numbered 1356? I've got a feeling it was in service recently, but it's not listed in the fleet lists for some reason.

If there was one, has it been withdrawn?

Fleet lists show it as retired, but I'm sure I saw it in service this week...

1356 certainly is in service, unless something has happened very recently

Another two new Scanias delivered to Port depot this morning, assume will become 1958 and 1959. 432 was retired yesterday.

Thanks Eagle Eye... i acknowledge a very poorly executed post highlighting the 'changed' conditions for gawler line. To think i re-read and edited twice...no more late night communications for me for a bit.

They didn't think that one through did they?!

Does anyone know what other work is happening on the Gawler line to warrant the whole line's closure?
