If any of you would like to know the history of your favourite bus service just let me know and I will give you a brief run down.

Example:

Route 540E - City to One Tree Hill via North East Road, Golden Grove Road and Snake Gully Road last operated on Friday 14 May 1982.

Route 681 began on Monday 17 December 1984.

Former Routes 7, 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E, 7F, 7G & 7H are now covered by 205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 229, 271, 273 & 503.

How about 775?

on a picture i saw at the volvo tour, there was a brown bomber on the picture with route 490.....

182 Used to be Route 5 and 181 Used to Be Route 5A

Here are the answers:

No such service as Route 775. Never has been either... well not in Adelaide.

Route 490 was re-numbered Route 228 on 9th March 1986. It commenced from Kintore Avenue (adjacent War Memorial) and ran via current route to the terminus @ Baker Street, Elizabeth Downs.

The terminal @ Baker Street is still clearly visible.

The 181 ran as far Regency Rd, it was scraped by serco in the late 90's.

Route 181 (previously Route 5A) operated from City to Prospect. The Prospect terminus was Stop 16A Hillsdale Street.

What's the history of buses in the Flagstaff Hill / Aberfoyle Park area?

The first service into the Aberfoyle Park area came on 14th August 1967 when Lewis Brothers commenced:

City to Aberfoyle Park via Unley Rd, Belair Rd, Main Rd, Coromandel Pde, Diosma Dr, Murrays Hill Rd & Black Rd to the terminal @ Ridgeway Dr.

March 1972 the service was numbered Route 880 and had been extended / re-routed via Memford Way, Warri Parri Dr, Leah St, Bellaview Rd & Warri Parri Dr to the terminus @ Bonneyview Dr.

Route 881 introduced on Monday 5 November 1973 from City to Flagstaff Hill via Goodwood Rd, Ayliffes Rd, Flagstaff Rd, Warri Parri Dr, Bellaview Rd, Leah St, Warri Parri Dr, Memford Way, Black Rd to the terminal @ Mannin Rd. (Route 880 was cut back to terminate @ Ridgeway Dr).

Route 880 was replaced by Routes 197 & 198 on 12th February 1984.

Route 882 introduced on Monday 1st August 1977 from Marion SC to Flagstaff Hill via Route 881.

Services extended to Oakridge Road (todays Stop 45) on 2nd June 1980.

Routes 881 & 882 re-routed via Flagstaff Road direct (just constructed) and extended to Happy Valley via Sunnymeade Drive and existing Route 218 on Monday 21st December 1981. At that time services as:

Route 881 - City to Happy Valley
Route 881A - City to Aberfoyle Park (Oakridge Rd)
Route 881E - Happy Valley to Bedford Park (Sturt Rd)
Route 882 - Marion SC to Happy Valley

From 18th April 1983 Route 881 deviated via Flinders Medical Centre (some trips only).

On 13th February 1984 Route 881 was extended along King William Street to the terminus @ Sir Edwin Smith Avenue. Route 882 was discontinued.

Weekend & Night services introduced on Route 881 on Sunday 22nd September 1985.

On 1st May 1988 Route 881 was re-numbered Route 218 and fully intergrated with Routes 210, 214 & 216.

Transit Link TL1 (now T219) was introduced in February 1992 along with Route 199 (now 699) from Aberfoyle Park to Old Reynella.

and anyone arriving to Salisbury interchange may have seen this at the 400-402 to Salisbury north stop... (yes i know all of the routes here, just thought i show something)

but as a side question when the 430 was the pathfinder, was it still given the route number 430 or not?

Bullet A became the T224 which was then cancelled in 2005

Just as a sidenote, 7B (now 207?) underwent at least one change during its existance. It used to terninate at the top of Dulkara Road, do a U turn at Wright Rd then start the return trip from there. Then K-Mart Ingle Farm was built and the route diverted along Winara Dve onto K-Mart.

The 221 used to travel down Main North Rd, then right George St, right Ragless Ave to the terminus. Then it would go right into Hurtle Ave then left into Main North Rd back to the city.

The old stop is no longer there but you can still see the painted stobie pole. Also i think it it still a bus zone! (It was about a year ago anyway)[/quote]

Yes, "Pathfinder" was just a branding/ marketing name during the trial period, once it was to become an official route it got the number 430 but the name had stuck with many of the locals.

The concept behind the name was to let the public know they were looking at a possible new route. I actualy think all new routes could of been given this tag during their trial periods, eg "Pathfinder 618" when that was a trial route. Once it became a fully operational route it loses the name.

Since the current Route 430 was introduced on Monday 3rd September 1990 it was officially designated as Route 430 - Pathfinder.

The word Pathfinder has only recently been done away with on the bus stop signage (however there may be couple remaining). The name gradually became meaningless over time but there was no official effort made to not use the word Pathfinder. It simply never caught on unlike Marion Access which was born in the same era!

For interests sake, the previous Route 430 which operated Salisbury to Elizabeth via John Rice Ave, Guerin Rd, Haydown Rd, Fairfield Rd, Midway Rd & Kinkaid Rd ceased on Sunday 3rd July 1983 when Routes 400 & 401 replaced it.

Does anybody else remember the one (un)successful summer of the 686X? That was a great service, given the poor set up of the 681/682 at the time.

Blackwood Services in the 1960's

I n 1959 a private operator named Dibell was operating a City to Bradbury & Scott Creek via Unley Road & Upper Sturt Road. This service became Route 861 in 1972 and was the forerunner of today's Route 193 & 194.

In 1965 'Ex-Serviceman' was operating a City to Sun Valley (Glenalta) via Unley Road, Belair Road, Main Road, Hollywood Way, Rosella Avenue & Hawthorndene Drive to the terminus @ Fairway Drive. This service was the beginning of Route 196. It was re-routed via Kalyra Road in November 1967.

In 1972 the services became;
Route 865 - Glenalta via Sheoak Road (today's Route 195).
Route 866 - Glenalta via Kalyra Road.

Weren't there Blackwood Stn services that went up Shepherds Hill Rd, to Blackwood Stn and then on into Hawthorndene and terminating there, before rteurning to the city via Blackwood Stn and Shepherds Hill Rd. A bit of a combination of the 728 and 195/6 maybe? Was this route 609 or 610? or was that just the 728 before being renumbered?

Blackwood Services in the 1960's (Part II)

On 28th March 1960 a private operator 'Henstridge' commenced the City to Blackwood Estate (now Hawthorndene) via South Road, Shepherds Hill Road & Sycamore Crescent. The terminus was located in Darwin Avenue and is still visible today. This service was the forerunner of the recently cancelled Route 728.

(Unless TT have cancelled it there used to be a School Bus that commenced from Darwin Ave to Blackwood High).

Between 1968 & 1971 there was also a Belair - Blackwood to Marion SC service operating via Shepherds Hill Road. It took until 13 February 1984 before another Marion SC service was introduced as Route 609 (now 739). Route 738 came later!

In 1972 the City to Hawthorndene service was numbered Route 610.

The first ever service into the Blackwood area came in about 1860 when horse buses were operated from the City to Clarendon via Coromandel Valley.

Blackwood Interchange opened on 13th February 1984.

On Markham Street, Enfield, there is still a bus stop for the old Route 521 (Hillcrest Hospital to Enfield). The stobey pole still has a "hail bus here" sign on it! Alas, it does not have a stop number.

Do you have the history on 520/521 and was it another route before becoming an extention of the old Route 8 (or 291)? Was that changed in the 80's with all the renumbering? And, when was the 521 cancelled?

The 207 you are thinking of finished on October 13 2006, the 207 now goes to Paradise via parts of the old 204 and 292 routes...

Going back to a previous post about Route 7 and associated letters.

Does anyone have a breakdown on where they all terminated.

I have an idea about 7E, and I know a 7-something terminated Hampstead Rd & Grand Junction Rd Corner (is that "turn" there on the South West corner built for busses or trams. It is similar to the "turn" at the old Route 9 terminus).

Also.... you said 610 went down South Rd and up the hills. That explains how the 611 and 612 were numbered! Thanks!

Thanks for the Blackwood info, I'm building a model of Blackwood station based in mid to late 60's and noticed an attractive model model of a Bedford SB7 by weico, so I'm wondering if it would be valid to have it in the station forecourt and what livery would be most realistic. Any suggestions most welcome.

Henstridge did have a couple of those. Their livery was cream (silver on some buses) with dark green bands.

If memory serves me correctly then this may also have been the 392 at one stage too.
