CityGlider starting today

Postby BT Buses » Sun Apr 11, 2010 8:03 am

The first CityGlider service commences today from Newstead at 10am. It is believed a few bus enthusiasts will be there for the first service, along with some others including myself at the Cultural Ctr taking pics.

Just a reminder though, don't take pics on the Busway platform if going to the Cultural Ctr, take the pics from the southern end of the Victoria Bridge, and don't do what i've seen somebody else do and hang over the rail to take pics as this can cause an un-necessary distraction for the drivers.

Have certain units been allocated to this run or will they just use whatever is available for the meanwhile?

MAN 18.310 (Diesel) Volgren are liveried for the service and I would imagine these would be used.

Managed to make the first CityGlider out of Teneriffe today. Good to catch up with a few members here.

Some pics --> here!

Managed to get across the river on the ferry for a change as well.

Cheers

You beat me too it :x

Did you create both parts using the same template?

The reason I ask is the CityGlider desto looks a bit out of proportion.

Then again its probably just me. I do like it however, and its good for future reference, as one normal photo can't show you the changing destos

I was thinking of doing one when I made a CityGlider front. We'll have to wait and see if I get around to it. Considering you haven't done one for a while its quite good. :)

Few over-enthusiastic foamers there? Are the gestapo booking people for taking photos at busway platforms these days?

Don't know about booking people, but they do certainly ask you to move on. It's all to do with OH&S, and ensuring you are away from where the public can enter buses, and I believe you have to wear some form of hi vis shirt/vest and the list goes on.
I can understand about moving people on when someone takes photos where people are trying to board, I have no objections there. Plus i've witnessed on numerous occassions where the sunlight/shade can be an issue and somebody will walk onto the busway to get pics.

I believe that was what was initially suggested however I think there may have been an issue with turning in some places along the route.

However this article from 2008 suggests rigid buses were first consider and thus are being used: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/qu ... 90827.html

you'd expect that as patronage increases artics would be good. the patronage yesterday in no way needed an artic.

I wouldn't think that BT would intend on introducing any different buses for the route due to the money spent on the paint job for Glider buses. I was under the impression that the Glider buses would do the glider and nothing else (only if there was a need) and that no other bus would do the Glider (considering the number of Glider buses they have), even at busy times there are still 4 spare (if I remember correctly)

they'd have to repaint existing artics, or purchase new ones. they have gone with a seperate 'pool' for the city glider buses, it probably makes it easier for passengers, but does it reduce operational flexibility.

To be quite honest at the frequency that they are running they probably don't need artics, also considering how many other buses (meaning routes) people can get from Teneriffe or West End to the city, which is more than likely the majority of trips taken.

The City Glider as implemented is a perfect example of completely missing the point. The service as originally conceived was supposed to be a high frequency, high capacity bus rapid transport service that would serve the same role as LRT (but be cheaper). As a reminder, take a look at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/bccwr/about_council/documents/sept07_final_report_brisbane_mass_transit_investigation_lmt.pdf and especially pages 38-40 to get an idea of the sort of vehicle suggested.

Instead we get a bog standard bus with a new paint scheme. Brillant  .
An enthusiast can be professional too, but any comment here is a personal comment only.

After reading that report I have to agree. Its just another bus.

It would have been far better just to extend the 192 to Teneriffe and upgrade it's frequency, or add a new express 194 (or any other number) route that goes along the CityGlider path...

Everything about this seems to show real tension between BCC and TL. Doesn't seem like TL want the service at all, and BCC are pushing it.

I think the tension started when BCC refused to paint their buses in TL livery which led to Campbell Newman proposing a State Gov buy out of BT.

Let's hope it's not that petty.

I think the notion that BCC & GCC contributes to PT but other councils don't is also getting up BCC nostrils.

I still can't believe the lack of integration. Continuing the eastern part of the 470 and the 192? Shouldn't the 192 be replaced by extensions of selected CityGlider services? 393 could be canned also, with the CityGlider now providing a good connection to rail, I don't see why we need it.

Could the lack of changes to existing services have to do with TL being stuborn about the whole CityGlider issue and their relationship with BCC/BT at the moment.

You are forgetting that the 393 provides a rail link for hospital workers and uni students from QUT KG. I know these people could just as easily go to RST but the 393 is still providing a service.
