Haha yep, "7 days a week between Tweed Heads and Broadbeach South station." Good one Translink

As an interesting measure of just how different the Gold Coast can work to other more traditional networks - the "peak" frequency of one every 10 minutes on the 705 applies 7 days per week towards Seaworld from around 9am-11am, and away from Seaworld from around 3:00pm to 5:30pm.

The Broadbeach routing is a pain in the neck but largely unavoidable - have to go via Pac Fair if you want to get between Broadbeach South and Jupiters, as the alternative is to go over to Broadbeach State School and do a u-turn which is just as bad but without any patronage benefit. At least it isolates the problem of accessing Jupiters to just one service.

Yeah it's interesting how the whole routing will work in Broardbeach. Wonder how it's going to treat the drivers.....

spotted from Gold Coast Bulletins for extending to tugun.
SOUTHERN Gold Coast business leaders have backed plans to extend the light rail to Tugun.

The State Government last week opened tenders for early planning for a Burleigh to Tugun link expected to go via Varsity Lakes Railway Station.

No timeline, funding or route have been decided but MPs are pushing for the system to run along West Burleigh Rd to connect with heavy rail at Varsity Lakes. A route from Burleigh Heads is thought to be prohibitively expensive because of engineering difficulties in extending the track across Tallebudgera and Currumbin creeks.

Connecting southern Gold Coast boss Peter Doggett welcomed the news and said connecting Gold Coast Airport to heavy or light rail was essential to the city’s future prosperity.

“We are encouraged by this news and while it is obviously going to be some time away, at least we know the government is seriously looking at it,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson confirmed in a statement that tenders were open but said it was not a priority.

“The government is looking closely at connecting the heavy rail to light rail at the northern end,” she said. “While this is the current focus we continue to investigate all options regarding future transport planning.”

The proposed second stage of the light rail, connecting Griffith University with Helensvale Railway Station or a purpose-built facility at Parkwood, is expected to cost between $100 million and $500 million.

Construction of the 16km first stage from Griffith University to Broadbeach will be complete early next month.

Burleigh MP Michael Hart said a western link to Varsity Lakes would significantly increase the integration of public transport.

“It is extremely unlikely any new light rail stage will go through Palm Beach and it does not have the support of myself or the community. A coastal track will happen over my dead body,” he said.

State bureaucrats were presented with a southern link proposal by city leaders at the March community cabinet meeting.

Just out of curiosity, are there going to be "next bus" type departure screens installed at the Southport A & B bus stops, cause I was there today and its seemed like it.

Yes, also at GCUH and the new 740 stop at Cypress Avenue (amongst others - I would expect at Broadbeach South as well).

Beware of the new officer in charge for trams.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Scott Emerson

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

New tram officers have the power

Passengers using the Gold Coast light rail system will be in safe hands as the new Customer Service Officers in charge of safety and security receive their powers of authority today.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson and Member for Southport Rob Molhoek welcomed 18 new officers to the team and today joined them on a test run of the tram network they will be protecting.

“We are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and fare evasion on public transport and today’s graduation is part of our strong plan for a brighter public transport future,” Mr Emerson said.

“These officers will provide the frontline service that passengers on the tram network will recognise and trust on their daily travels.”

Member for Southport Rob Molhoek said it is great to see all officers graduating today are from the local area.

“We thank GoldLinQ’s commitment to providing local employment,” Mr Molhoek said.

“The new officers will be in charge of revenue protection, safety, security as well as a support to passengers during special events.”

Mr Emerson said this was an exciting milestone which followed eight months of testing the system including training 50 tram drivers.

“The light rail system is in its final phase, which will have the trams running to the operational timetable of 7.5 minutes on peak and 15 minutes off peak,” Mr Emerson said.

“Finishing works for footpaths, landscaping and station fit outs are being completed before passenger services begin.

“The project will revolutionise public transport for the Gold Coast community and get more people out of their cars, easing congestion on the road network.”

The $1.2 billion project consists of 14 trams, 16 stations servicing a 13-kilometre route and is jointly funded by State and Federal Governments and City of Gold Coast.

Still no word on the commencement date....don't think it will be Monday June 2 as Surfside were told early this month....love the scripted answers being issued by the Minister, the Translink facebook page and even by one of the head engineers who I have as a customer regularly....but regardless on Saturday July 12 the local business community is sponsoring a free day of travel along the G: - will be a good opportunity to really explore the new system and take your time doing it and at no cost!

The only confirmed position at the moment is that on 1 July there will be trams running. For what portion of June that will be is not yet finalised.

I have a feeling that the G: is going to commence on the 30th of June. The reason why I believe this is because if you go to Translink's journey planner, and click on the date selection button, the furthest you can go to as of today is the 29th of June, so since the last day of June is the 30th, I believe that the G: will open on the 30th with all the light rail data put on the journey planner put on the Translink website tomorrow. Just a thought.

Yes....maybe 2015....and for the last day of June there was no testing at all as they were very busy installing orange catseyes at the troublesome intersection Queen St/Ada Bell Way at Southport - stacks of them which should wake up anyone using that designated tramway for a road! Even the local business alliance has postponed their free day on Saturday 12 July...and the last few days has seen the new network maps which adorned the new stops all removed and plenty of barricades appear to prevent any accidental pedestrian access. And the bus stops have had additional orange stickers "coming soon" affixed to the notices outlining the changes to their services. Wonder if Sportsbet is running a book on the starting date....

The latest delays with "stray current" indicate this whole thing is developing into a farce. maybe its time to send the trams back to Europe and fund another 20 or so buses for Surfside.

If the problem was sufficiently serious they wouldn't be testing at all, let alone to a full timetable.

The issue relates to the resistance being a few ohms short of what is required in some spots. Telstra signed off this week, and if anything I thought they would be last.
