Wow!! Sydneysiders always complain about the lack of power on the "gassies". If ACTIONs #490 K230 is a gassie, best of luck moving it, let alone getting up a hill. Likewise the K230 14.5m. If Hobart's K230s are anything to go by, THESE TWO BUSES MUST BE GUTLESS

Well the 14.5s are actually K320UBs, and the CNG bus would be a K270, as Scania never offered the 230hp engine with CNG...

The Steertags are K320UB. 490 is a K230UB.

ACTION have not released a specifications sheet for #490 however they have confirmed for us that it is definitely a K230UB. Further info on that particular vehicle is available here: http://www.actbus.net/fleetwiki/index.p ... BUS_490_(2)

It is a trial unit, with word on the street being it was to tour differnet operators around Australia. But ACTION have had 490 for a while now.

It is a field trial bus and is a one off. It was given to ACTION to trial for a short time however i believe the original trial period was extended. I have only caught this bus once and it seemed to go perfectly fine, it seemed to perform better than the L94 gassies in my opinion.

It is a heap of XXX, the L94s go so much better.

It went through a period of going really well but last time I was on it (about a month ago) the slowest artic in the fleet could have out dragged it!

It's unfair to judge it off a bad run if it went well previously, it could have developed a mechanical fault.

Calling it a price of XXX is a fair call, it has been on the back of the tow truck more than it's been on the road'

Teething problems. It is, after all, a trial bus, with a unique engine configuration, constantly requiring re-jigging. To be honest, it should be restricted to the shortest shift, and kept off the road as much as possible, because a bus as unreliable as it should not be in general revenue service.

Perth's Scania L94UA CNG (the only one in existance as far as I know) is also a lemon and spends more time on the back of Veolia's Tow Truck.

I honestly don't believe Scania would have wasted their time building a 230hp CNG motor just for one bus. I'd say it's either a K270UB or they've ripped ya's off and stuck the 4 Series Carby fed motor from the L94's in it and coupled it up to a 6Spd ZF...

It's the same engine/motor in the K230UB as the K270UB, just a different turbo and tuning.

Cheers, not much call for them around here! Thought that they'd be either that or a budget attempt at one of them poly smart bar type bullbars! Sort of defeats the purpose of riding a bike if your just gonna stick it on the front of a bus and take it to work, unless you want to use it as an excuse to tell the mrs you've been riding to work to lose a few kilos and thats why your later home, meanwhile you've caught the bus with your bike to the pub on the way home, slipped a few quick ones in and pushed the treadly back into the driveway and shes none the wiser!

The whole reason behind it is so that you can ride to your interchange, then put your bike on a bus to get close to work, then ride the rest of the way. Canberra is perfect for this kind of route due to the way the town centres are connected by the Intertown (Now Blue Rapid) and the suburbs are connected to the Town Centres by a series of bike paths. They have been a failure in so many other cities as most are not designed in the way Canberra is, so there is no real benefit to having racks on buses. Also, unless most buses running certain (Advertised) routes have them on, most people would not use the service as there would be no guarantee of actually getting a bus with a rack. Now as we are slowly upgrading buses, there are gaps in the Bike and Ride service which may see it become unpopular. Another thing for ACTION to do is to also ban bikes on routes outside of the Blue and Red Rapid services. There is no benefit to health by allowing people to put their bike on a bus outside their home, then taking it off when they get to their destination only on the off chance they may ride somewhere. It should be bike (to you interchange or nearest BR RR stop) and ride (The bus).
