The TASMANIAN BUS & COACH SOCIETY conducted their annual tour back in late April. It was again a HUGE success with 46 participants both days, with 30 of those venturing from mainland Australia. The TBCS wish to THANK the mainland contingent, for constantly returning to join our tours and trust you all had a great time.
Day 1 of this years tour centred on the Huon Valley, taking in 7 operators, including some we'd never visited before. Likewise, TBCS generally don't use the same "tour vehicle" for the whole day, and rotate through various operators between stops. AGAIN, our THANKS go to the many operators who generously "open their doors" and welcome us enthusiasts, year after year. These include on Day 1 > Anthea Simmons, Wayne Phillips, Frances Roberts, Richard Roberts, Shane O'Neill, Michael Moon, Doug Wisby and John Badenach. Our "chefs" for the day, Jeoff Young, David Jenkins and Bob Nichols along with the scrumptious cakes courtesy of Huonville CWA
Our day started from Hobart in Anthea Simmons' 1994 Hino CM277K, which ate up the hills. even though we were nearly fully loaded. However, before departing Hobart, participants enjoyed listening to ABC Radio and Chris Wisbey, whom featured our media correspondent Grant Wise, as he explained the day's proceedings and welcomed the mainlanders to TAS and the tour. Chris Wisbey has been a strong supporter of the Society over the years, and we thank him again for his statewide exposure. Our first stop was down the Huon at Wayne Phillips place, and although he was expecting us a week earlier, we still managed to photograph his buses. From there, further down the road to Frances Roberts, one of the bigger operators in the Huon Valley. Here participants wandered the fleet taking numerous shots before boarding his brother Richard's 1988 ISUZU LT1-11P/PMC down to the riverbank for our BBQ lunch stop.
A relaxing lunch on the banks of the river was a highlight 6yrs ago when we last toured the valley, and this year was just as relaxing. It was also unexpected, to be ahead of schedule and we were packed up ready to go when our next operator Shane O'Neill appeared to transport us to the township of Cygnet and his depot in a 1999 Renault MRC (ex Marshalls QLD). At O'Neill's, participants inspected the vehicles and checked out some old relics "down in the paddock" before we were picked up by another operator, Michael Moon in his 2014 Yutong (ex Sydney Bus Charters) for our trip over the 'saddle' to the seaside township of Woodbridge. Along the way participants experienced spectacular scenic views looking over the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. TBCS member Nicholas Witzerman had the opportunity to take some participants on a joyride in a Hino Rainbow RB145K down to the waterfront. On his return, the group then continued back toward Hobart stopping at our last visit for the day, Wisby Buses in Margate. Doug is the largest operator in the Channel and after a few photos we were transported back to Hobart by John Badenach in Doug's 2002 Volvo B7R to complete a spectacular day taking in many operators and experiencing some spectacular scenery of the Huon Valley.
As a treat, the Society normally organise an evening meal for the group to socialise with the locals, this year at the Lenah Valley RSL. Participants were transported in the Society's own 1978 Volvo B58/PMC "Tassie Bluebird" which was a real treat for the mainlanders.
