MTT Freighter-SA bodied SB3 Bedford No.236

Post by LocoLes »

No. 236 was the final of 36 Freighters delivered to Hobart by Freighter-SA built in Adelaide. An initial order for 51 similar vehicles was placed in 1968 to replace the trolleybus fleets in both Hobart and Launceston. A further 8 similar Freighters were delivered in 1969.
Hobart buses delivered in 1968 were numbered 201-232 and 4 more numbered 233-236 were delivered in 1969.
Launceston buses delivered in 1968 were numbered 301-318 and 3 more numbered 319-321 were delivered in 1969.
In addition to the above, Burnie received 2 Freighters, 1 in 1968 [526] and 1 in 1969 [527].
In 1973 No. 236 was transferred to Burnie where it remained until new Mercedes-Benz [Ansair bodies] began arriving in 1987.
The Freighter-SA Bedford had stained interior wall panels and seat-backs [see photo link].

Thanks for these photo's LocoLes, these are one of my Favorites of the MTT Bedford's. I can remember going to school on these in Hobart and recall how bright and airy they were after the older Bedford's.

Quite a few in later years must have been transferred, because I remember #229 returning to Hobart FROM Burnie about '77, because as a spritely 15yr old, I had a wheel of it around the waterfront (shhhhhhhh), commenting it was like a brand new bus. Within 3mths, the gearbox was all over the shop.
AGAIN, FANTASTIC photos LocoLes

Hi, Yes, 12 ex Hobart Freighter-SA Bedfords were transferred to Burnie....[225-236]....No.231 was in Launceston for a short period before going to Burnie.
Plus there were 5 ex Launceston [317-321].
Cheers, LocoLes.

Shame one of these hasn't been preserved, considering how historically significant they were as the main trolley bus replacements. Same with their predecessors, the tram replacement Ansairs. Maybe a half decent one in private ownership may become available one day?

HAVE seen a few of them around (although ALL now motorhomes :( ) but Ansairs are few & far between. Personally, I'd LOVE to have an Ansair to restore

Yes, its a shame TBCS wasn't well and truly established in the 1980's. There were same great Ansairs still around at the time. I particularly remember H.C.C.'s no. 812 in brown livery. I think it must have been their major projects crib bus.
