Caution - School Bus

Post by LocoLes »

Yellow school buses located in country SA towns and Adelaide is the focus of this post. The buses here are either International ACCO or Hino BX341 and AK176K one door vehicles and as the passengers involved were children mainly being transported to and from home to area schools the fleet is in the appropriate SA yellow livery. Many found new owners after EDSA [Education Department South Australia] later to be known as DECS. Former EDSA #1261 is shown in Goolwa Bus and Coach livery as #26. Hino BX341 registered WWR 836 is photographed at Strathalbyn still in yellow livery but with fleet details painted over.
This is just a small selection taken in pre digital camera days. :)

A HUGE thankyou for sharing these pics. The EDSA Hinos don't get much love from many enthusiasts, but I have always liked them. I feel like anyone who never experienced them doesn't really understand what great buses they were.

The 1300 and 1400 (AK176K) series units will always be my favourite, but mainly because that is what we had at my school (Heathfield) 1408 did the Bridgewater run, 1428 did the Mylor run. 1428 is even photographed above, another big thanks for sharing. We also had 1407 doing the Ironbank run for a short time. I will admit 1408 was a lemon and I don't miss her that much, but 1428 was a beast (and sounded like one too!), will be missed greatly.

These days we have Daewoo 1581 on the Bridgewater run (entered service with us at the start of 2015), and Daewoo 1602 on the Mylor run, not based at Ceduna as Fleetlists suggests. On the Ironbank run (which has since been extended to Cherry Gardens) we have one of LinkSA's "jelly beans on wheels", BCI Proma 555. Those 3 coupled with the 5 AdMet school buses and Heathfield is quite a gunzel school.

The Daewoos we have are fine, built reliatively well and 1602 at least can go quite fast, but they don't have the same character or comfort as the Hinos. From me at least, they are sorely missed, and I for one am glad there are 2 in preservation (1286 and 1432).
First person on 822, 865 (2016 re-route).
Last person on 164, 867, 868

As an Ex EDSA School bus driver, I can admit that these units are the best.
I drove the following buses: Leyland Terriers 1018 & 1019, International 1095, 1118 and Hino's 1173,1170,1390.
The Leyland Terriers will also be my Fav, that when you knew you were driving a bus full of kids.
Great Photos, Keep posting more of EDSA buses.

1242 bus based in Port Pirie for a while in the 1990's.
I only drove a few bedfords, not my cup of tea, but they did the job.
If you have any of the Leyland Terriers, that would be great.
Leyland Terrier 1019 is on Grand Junction Rd for Sale, it is now fitted with a Cummins motor.
1398 is on Port Wakefield Rd at a camper place for sale with some others.

Does anyone know the Number of the Buses being stored on Main North Rd, 1 has an air-con unit, but no curtains.

When i was working for EDSA at Port Augusta High School, buses 1173 and 1390 were based there.
1173 bus done the Morning and Afternoon School run to Bungala Estate from Port Augusta High School and Central Primary School.
1390 did 2 Morning and 2 Afternoon School Runs to Stirling North from Port Augusta High School and Augusta Park High School.

During the day both buses were used for year 12 class movements between Port Augusta High School, Augusta Park High School & Caritas College.
Great Buses to drive.
I have some photo's to post but I am having issues posting them on here.

Wow this is fantastic Loco Les, certainly good to see some fantastic photos of these beautiful, seriously misunderstood creatures.

The unnumbered 1st series Hino at Strathalbyn used to do the Meadows via Paris Creek run to Eastern Fluerieu schools. 1398 used to Meadows via Ashbourne to EF as well. Seeing a lot of other familiar numbers.

Interesting to see how shiny and well looked after they were in their early days, when the 13 and 14 series Hinos went up for Auction over the last couple of years, they looked VERY different and needed some good TLC (at least externally!). As mentioned by Data, I'm the proud owner of 1432 which spend some years over at Port Broughton before retirement.

When I was at Mount Barker High School, we had an assortment of Hinos, including 1218, 1222, 1236, 1238, 1250, 1280 and 1438. There were a few others I never got the numbers of.

At Clare the only DECS Hino was 1410, while the rest were privately owned Inters and Rhinos all ex DECS, plus a few DECS Coasters and Rosa's.

Curious, how much they asking for 1242? 1243 was on Gumtree for $5k - $6k a while back.

1368 along with another 13XX Hino were also recently for sale at the Adelaide Camperagent RV centre on Port Wakefield Rd, 1364 is at a Mechanics opposite and 1369 is at another place along there as well. All for sale for $8k ++

Leyland 1019 is for sale at Truckworld on GJ Road for $12k!

Hi MAN SG280H,

Just found the only photo of a Leyland Terrier [ex EDSA] that I have taken over the years........... It is photographed at Minlaton, YP in the Benbow [of Minlaton] fleet. You will of course note the buses on York Peninsula must transverse among the worst maintained gravel surfaced roads in SA?. Most buses based on YP that I have in my collection are covered in road grime and this Leyland Terrier still in EDSA yellow livery is no exception. :(
The air cleaner? mounted on the front of this Terrier certainly stands out! Is the external air cleaner a 'normal' fitting on these buses?

It was somewhat difficult to ascertain whether the Bedford photos in my collection once belonged to EDSA but some were and here are my 11 photos.
The Riverton bus [SHX-214] was quite new when photographed. EDSA seemed to have SB3 [petrol] and SB5 [diesel] engines in their fleet. Any info to correct my photos is welcome.
Hope these will revive some memories.

By the way Loco Les, do you use Facebook at all? If so, I run an EDSA/DECS School Bus appreciation page, you and everyone are more than welcome to join. If not, may I add these photos to the group? With full credit to you of course.

Hi Denair....Thanks for the info ref Nottle's Bedford.
Will leave the photo in the thread as I have stated it was difficult to confirm the Bedford photographs were or were not ex EDSA vehicles. :)
