MTT Adelaide AEC Swift.

Post by LocoLes »

Not a large collection but the photographs posted show the AEC Swift vehicles in their original silver livery as well as the Bee Line Route 99B Free service and Route 99C Free service. Fleet numbers were 401-692 [292 vehicles].

No.703 and No.751 are members of the next generation of AEC Swift buses built to similar design of the Volvo B59 fleet of 307 vehicles. The '700' series AEC Swift fleet were not to enjoy a life-span as did the B59 fleet. :(

Former No.452 is photographed at Glenelg [Motor home].

Great photos, thanks for sharing LocoLes. Just on photo no. two; that location looks more like The Parade (stop 13 'up') than Kensington Rd.

Very nice photos. Interesting that you've got photos of some that remind me of renumbered vehicles of a newer chassis type. These being 565, and to a lesser extent, 509.

Do you have any of the original 422 at all?

Great collection of photos,LocoLes. I think the motorhome was one of many converted.I dont this one was the one located on Montacute Road at Rostrevor. That bus had a better exterior finish that the one shown here. I wonder how many people have tried to hail that bus.

Hi TA3001,
Re 422 [ex 1322] No but I do have 438 [ex 1338]. :D
Will scan it for you soon. It's quite an interesting photo actually as it is being followed along Finniss Street, Marion by one of the two Mercedes Benz L0812 Mini 29 seaters that were once used on the MA1/MA2 Marion service when that particular 'local' service first started up. Those 2 Mercedes were fleet nbrs 314 and 315 [see fleet list STA 1995 history].
Cheers Les.

AEC closed down in 1979, so availability of parts probably would've been an issue if they kept the AECs going for too long.

Hi 3001,
Here's the only photo I have of a '1300' class MAN NL202[1338] plus an interior photo of 1332.
I realize it doesn't come under the topic 'AEC Swift' but after all this is in answer to your question re 422.

Note: Mercedes Benz L0812 following No.1338 is operating MA1 Marion Access route - STA started MA1/MA2 routes with fleet numbers 414/415

Enjoy these :D

Wow - how clean and shiney is the interior of 1332? I think the speedstripe livery looks much better than the AdMet livery they are in now. I wonder how the SL202s would have looked in the O-Bahn livery?

The interior photo there is of the current 1332, which is an NL202.

....... And the current 1332 (ex- 222 with Serco) is 19 years old now (1997 vintage). The interior looks more like an NL202, but I've only had a limited experience with each type.

Hi Les,

Just a quick correction, 1338 is an SL202. The NL202's were low floor as in your interior pic and had the boxier less stylish body, they actually had 2 boxy body designs.

Not sure how long the Merc L0812's lasted on the MA services as I only ever remember seeing the MAN 10.180's (1311, 1312 & 1313) then the MAN 11.190's.
