Adelaide's MAN SG280H fleet

Post by LocoLes »

Most photographs in this post are of the STA MAN SG280H fleet when they initially operated the Route 222 service along Goodwood Road from Flinders University to Gepps Cross. No.1970 is pictured at Crafers and No.1977 is meeting gold liveried H377 Glenelg tram at South Terrace temporary terminus to operate a Tram Substitute service for Christmas Pageant passengers into the city.

Another photo is of SouthLink No.2354 at Flinders Medical Centre interchange. :P

Note the Green pin-stripe livery as originally applied to these vehicles.

Great photos, thanks for sharing LocoLes. Just to point out that the temporary tram terminus is at South Tce, not Greenhill Rd.

Thanks The Phonj re South Terrace.......now corrected :D
That's why I am reluctant to write a book as it's hard to remember those vital details years later. Suggest now that diary use back then would save all those problems!
Cheers, Les.

Wow, *drools*. Wow.

Great photos LocoLes (again), especially that one of the 165 in Aldgate. (How predictable am I?).

Thanks for posting these. It's nice to see them in their earlier liveries with their original numbers.

What I don't understand is why these sounded so different compared to the SL200 rigids? There wasn't a huge difference between the O305s and O305Gs, but with these, it's like comparing an NL202 to an SL202.

Hi TA3001. About the only thing I can think of re different sound between rigid SL200 and artic. SG280H fleet is the positioning of the exhaust stack on the rigid is below rear wheels whereas the artic has the vertical LH stack to meet compliance regulations then in place when built! LH side position also probably contributed to damage to exhaust system when it came into contact with 'street furniture' eg: tree branches and shop awnings. :| May have contributed to different sound perhaps! :|

Looking at these photos a bit closer, I think 1970 is displaying an incorrect desto. It is seen pulling out of the inbound stop 42 "Aldgate Village", so should be displaying "City via Crafers" (or something to that affect). It definitely can't be going to Aldgate, as the other side of the road is a carpark/reserve, and there's no way it has changed that much in around 30 years (the trees in the reserve have much more than 30 years growth).

Still, they're good shots, thanks for sharing.
