Unknown articulated "bus"

Post by boronia »

This was photographed in the Adelaide area in the mid 1960s.

No details have been recorded. Anyone recognise it??

That's not an artic. in the full sense of the term, not even a semi-trailer bus. I'd say that it was a "road train bus"!!!

Seriously though, I've never seen or heard of it before.

"On the Buses" is correct.

Whatever the correct term for it is, it replaced the original SAR-operated horse tram between Victor Harbor and Granite Island (about 1955, from memory), and ran until replaced by the 'new generation' horse tram re-introduced in 1986, and which still runs today.

From memory, it ran with up to 6 'carriages', depending on demand - I could never work out how all six obediently went exactly where the 'engine' went, but they always did!

There was a push button buzzer system on each carriage for the conductor to communicate with the driver.

It had nowhere near the charm of the original or current horse tram operations (I am just old enough to have travelled on the original, very late in its life), but it seemed to do a good trade, none-the-less.

I guess it had more than one tractor as its engine over its period of operation, but I don't think the carriages ever changed.

Thanks for the photo - I had almost forgotten about it!

I think the photo is taken at the Granite Island terminus - the kiosk in the background looks very like the kiosk which used to be there - long gone now.

Cheers

This looks like the same one, scroll down about half way to the last one in the 'early history' section.

The tractor looks like a Ferguson TA20.

Seeing the picture, rekindles a memory of travelling on this vehicle in May 1963, on my first visit to Adelaide.
