Wow,

They are old photo's, no Mc Donalds in Swanston street, Im 36 and remember Mc Donalds there ever since my memory serves!

Bus pictures like that sure do show our ever changing Melbourne.

A credit to the photographer and for posting.....

"Its only a bus if it smells like diesel!" Electric buses might aswell be trams!!**

The same sentiments appear in tram groups. For years, tram & bus photographers concentrated on 3/4 portrait photos. Years later, the streetscape becomes more interesting than the vehicle. For years, photographers avoided getting people in photos. Today, people in photos are clues to an era (hair and clothing styles). Whenever we have a hobby death, I scour my collection to find a photo which shows the deceased in action.

Any nearside photos? A very generous selection of Nationals. Like the fleet no. order of appearance.
NSW, the state that embraces mediocrity.

At the risk of being pedantic, many of the Leyland National photos seem a bit odd when looking at their destinations.
For example, in the photo of 822, route 262 went from the City to Newmans Rd via Templestowe - it went nowhere near Shoppingtown (although the Freeway subsidiary board would fit).
In the photo of 823, route 278 was the Sunday only Warrandyte to City via Templestowe and Doncaster - I doubt the MMTB ran a service from Warrandyte to Ringwood on Sundays.

Anyone got any suggestions, or should I consider myself a pedant gunzel?

Shift/run numbers? N was North Fitzroy and D was Doncaster from memory. Trams used the same system unsurprisingly.

Particularly necessary when getting/providing relief mid trip.

There are places in Melbourne and Sydney where you might have several buses pull up to get relief simultaneously.

It just makes the job of getting on the correct bus a little easier.

Occasionally the buses might arrive out of order, and there have been many times that a relieving driver has quickly jumped on without checking the run number and taken off on the wrong bus!

The problem then being that moments later you will have the correct bus pull up with the relieving driver saying ...'no mate ..I'm looking for run F46....(gone!)
